With a series so well-anchored by these two men, the range of the ensemble in place to support them also happens to be a wealth of comedic riches. ... Here, too, lies an example of something that Our Flag Means Death pulls off so well: the blending of comedy and sincerity, especially between the type of people who are still trying to discover the truest versions of themselves.

None of these characters proves an immediate standout, but they each become more amusing as we get to know them better, which bodes well for their voyage’s future. ... Darby and Waititi’s bonkers rapport is the mirthful wind in Our Flag Means Death’s sails, propelling it into ludicrous mismatched-buddy-comedy territory.

In “Our Flag Means Death,” the farcical humor is more of the subtle, knowing variety than it is playing for big belly laughs.

The most interesting thing about “Our Flag Means Death” — if also what might disappoint fans hoping for something more patently ridiculous — becomes how it ends up more gently introspective than outright funny in its hunt for comic treasure.

It is the chemistry between the two leads, who are old friends from New Zealand, that keeps this lark afloat.

Every time “Our Flag Means Death” threatens in its first five episodes to really find its voice, it feels like a kid distracted by a new, different two in the next chapter. Ultimately, it’s got enough amusing moments and talented performers to offer some comedic escapism once a week, but anyone looking for another “Shadows” or “Flight of the Conchords,” should sail to other waters.

“Our Flag Means Death” is always stuck feeling like it’s either trying too hard, or not trying enough; it plays out like the kind of comic experiment that must have been fun for its actors and filmmakers, while we struggle to get on board with its freewheeling dopiness.

Enjoyable show and great to see Taika and Rhys working together again. If you ever wondered what Black Sails would be like as a light hearted goofy comedy you'll probably really like this show.

While it takes a few episodes for this show to start to bear it's claws (it coincides with Waititi's Blackbeard being introduced), there is enough there for this show to build upon going forward.

This is a tough 4. I love everyone in it and the concept is great. The execution, however, is less than stellar. I think this is one of those shows where the premise is a hit, but after 2 episodes (I lost interest in the third), I'm bored. Worst thing you can get out of a comedy with great casting and direction. The writing just isn't there.

So unfunny and bland, i feel bad for the actors who had to carry such a lazy and dumb writing.
