season 4 has been a series of fart jokes and desperate scripting -- JeanSmart deserves much, much better. The plotting is wildly unfocused, and the screaming by most characters is shrill and rarely funny. Please transfer the Kayla character to any other programme, so boring and predictable is she - and while she's transitioning, speech classes would be very useful. I know my response is a minority opinion, but maybe season 5 will find firmer footing and get past the pointless, predictable feuding between the two principals.

We were huge fans from the beginning - especially from the beginning - because there was a striving intention to be seen and heard by the primary characters portrayed by Smart and Einbinder. Lots of intelligent, edgy, dark, silly comedy emerged from that dynamic. Now that they've "made it" they're just bickering at each other. The series seems to have lost its way (this is based on Episode 1 in Season **** this takes a believable/watchable turn, I'm back in!)

Hollywood needs to stop thinking that their farts smell like roses, and this show is a prime example of that. Completely overrated. Jean Smart is no standup comedian. I'm sorry but she's not and giving her all the trophies in the world is never going to convince me that she is anything but what the title of the shoe states - a true hack. Joan Rivers is rolling over in her grave because they stole her legacy for this mediocre at best series. And that little girl costar is nepotism at it's worst. Her mom was a terrible comic and now so is her daughter. A few laughs here and there, but mostly this show is only good for playing in the background while you are busy doing other things.

"Hacks" (S03, 9-eps, 32+ mins, MAX) This series, starring Jean Smart, continues to shine among so much streaming dross out there. "Deborah Vance" and her on-again-off-again assistant and head-writer "Ava Daniels" have such an entertaining, co-dependent relationship that it's just always fun from situation to situation. The series writing is funny, intriguing, and plausible. It's just so good in all the important dimensions. And at the season's finale, "Ava" finally makes a really important step in her growth, and that would be a good launch into a season four, if we're fortunate enough to get that green-lit, let's really hope so.

This show is so brilliant in so many levels that I'm not even able to talk about it. -- after finale edit (even though i'm still not able to talk about it but that's on me): never seen a comedy show this brilliantly made. just jokes nonstop man god who wrote these jokes one killer after another. such a funny show im laughing actually loud. great story great writing actually I could have given another 10 if the story wasn't this great either. always good vibes. the relationship always felt real and their clash exciting to watch. this season was especially beautiful to the eyes, amazing shots, but that could just be my new tv. no not really the finale was something else. all characters are so good and exciting to watch, funny dialogues. great on all aspects that tv medium can exhibit. the finale moved me and i don't even normally say that. best funny thing that roamed through american media since 2010.

I absolutely love this show. The concept since season one has been very creative and even in the newest season they haven't lost the spark.

The best comedy tv series I’ve seen in a few years. The chemistry between Deborah and Ava are undeniably hilarious and genuine. Just one of the few shows where everything clicks.

Brilliant chemistry between a refreshingly new television pairing. Smart and Einbinder are just brilliant together and elevate some of the more familiar material at the beginning and then really shine once the show catches up to them. A hoot!

I'm 40 minutes in and I'm yet to find anything I like. For a show about comedians and comedy writers, it's not very funny. The fat receptionist comic relief character who is stupid beyond believability is a typical Hollywood clown shouting, "look at me, I'm funny!" I get the impression I'm supposed to be impressed by the old woman? She's super rich. She's a **** She lives a vacuous, shallow, lonely existence. She takes what she has (which is nothing without someone to share it with) for granted. I don't like the young woman either. Both of them are products of a corrupt, disgustingly wealthy, morally bankrupt, egotistical world called Hollywood. Film-makers used to try and tell the greatest stories in the world. Now they just turn the camera around and point it back into their soulless lives. This show is about a writer and a comedian, but the writing **** and it isn't funny. I'm sure it gets better, but 40 minutes is too long to wait for a reason to stick around. I don't want to watch 5 hours for 15 minutes of gold. This gets "universal acclaim"? It's really not that good.

This series started off rather strong with a relatively light tone that seemed to poke fun at whatever "fame" means these days. However, it soon sank into the same morass as most mainstream entertainment these days: The show is so in love with its own depravity it becomes almost impossible to relate to. Never mind sympathizing with the characters-- they seem perfectly content to live in their little world of debauchery and hurl insults at each other. The relationship between the two leads takes way too long to establish, by which point you're not buying the fact that one of them hasn't just moved on. Some of the lines are sharp, but overall the writing is inconsistent in tone and just hamfisted. The acting, as it were, is good. Still, most Americans stay out of Vegas and Hollywood so they don't have to deal with people like this.

An amusing enough show though its drama is painfully contrived. Comedy isn't laugh out loud though it feels like the writers tried too hard in ill-advised ways (eg: assistant to the manager of the 2 main characters is a ridiculous culmination of cringy, inappropriate, unbelievable personality traits and useless b-stories fabricated purely for "comedic" effect). The rest of the show is fine to pass some time in front of the TV. The 2 main characters are enjoyable protagonists, though not particularly likeable, fairly relatable. The writing for Smart's character as a professional comedian requires some suspension of disbelief, but Smart portrays her character expertly enough for one to ignore the failings of the writing staff when it comes to some of the basic professionals traits of long-time professional comedians. Occasionally, it appears as though the character of Vance is a novice at the art of the joke and stand-up performance despite being a comedy legend and Vegas headliner for decades. Jean Smart absolutely carries the show with Einbinder supporting admirably at times. Secondary characters are barely memorable.

This is a great series that is based mostly on the relationship between the two leading characters, Ava and Deborah. This relationship defines the conflict between the young and the old.

This feels like a show that deserves a large audience but will never be around long enough to catch on. I feel lucky to have found it. I've always been a fan of Jean Smart, but Hannah Einbinder is a revelation. And the writing is so sharp and clever.

The 2021 TV series Hacks on HBO is a drama about a comedian and a comedy writer. So, the series is not so much a comedy as it is a drama about comedy. The series is generally considered good and receives a lot of positive reviews. I'm going to skip making comments regarding the high-quality aspects of the series and make an observation about some of the actors in the less important roles. I do this because I've always felt when casting, writing, etc does very good work on the minor roles - it invariably results in very good entertainment. Kaitlin Olson who plays Deborah "DJ" Vance Jr. and Christopher McDonald who plays Marty Ghilain, CEO of the Palmetto Casino have non-major, straight roles in the series. Thier acting, the writing, directing, etc for their parts is excellent. And to me, the attention to details like that is what makes a series like Hacks good.

While Jean Smart is terrific as usual (and the show couldn't have been done without her), the show falls short. Ironically, given the title, it's because of the writing. I was disappointed especially with the finale, where short shrift was given to what happens in Einbider's character's family; how could that not be more emotional, after the buildup in previous episodes? It was just passed over .... And we didn't get to see any of Deborah's last show. Wasn't anyone up for writing it? Or at least a snippet or two? In the end, I felt like the season fell flat in the end, serving just as a vehicle for setting up another season. That said, will I watch it? Probably, but with hope for something that rings truer and deeper for these characters, with humor that's truly earned.

Pretty good show. Of course, anything with Jean Smart has my vote! I think this show has a lot of future potential. There's many different ways the story line can go. I just hope they stick to the script and that they don't start getting carried away with romances and bed scenes, because that will ruin it! This show has a lot going for it if the writers play their cards right and I think HBO Max was very wise to pick up HACKS for a 2nd season. Actually, thus far, I think this series could easily go beyond 2 seasons. Let's see how it goes.

A comedy serie about a comedian... with no jokes. The series start very poorly.

Jean Smart crushed it in the finale. The episodes hold up in 2nd viewing because of the great acting and character development. The jokes from Deborah and Ava aren't supposed to be stellar because.Vances jokes are supposed to be stale. Next season I am hoping they focus more on workshop ping jokes

After finishing all of Season One, I can confidently assert that this is one of the best new shows of 2021. Excellent writing and acting. Laughed out loud in every episode.

I’m enjoying this. Smart is strong as usual and I love the character of Deborah Vance. While I’m not crazy about Ava’s character, portrayed lovely by Einbinder, I still manage to root for her. I wouldn’t typecast this show as a full on comedy, it’s more of a dramedy that has some grit and feel good moments.

Hacks might have considered hiring at least one person capable of writing a joke for their comedy about stand-up comedy.

Update: I initially reviewed after watching two episodes and after finishing the first season I can say I was wrong. This show is great. The acting is excellent, the characters very well developed, and the humor is a great mix of old school and modern. I was definitely cheering for everyone by the end. Hell yeah, more please.

This series features the always wonderful Jean Smart as a comedy legend who’s been a Vegas headliner for many years. When her popularity starts to wane, a social media disgraced young writer (Hannah Einbinder) is brought in to help modernize her style. Needless to say, they do NOT hit it off, but also as expected, they start to warm up by the 5th episode (all that’s been released). While this is billed as a comedy, the funny is in short supply. Smart plays mean arrogance beautifully, while Einbinder has little discernible personality. The rich Vegas lifestyle provides some fun, but the show is headed more into heart-warming territory than humor.
