House of the Dragon4
Jan 5, 2023
Wow this is really dumb! It's a sloppy mess reminiscent of the last couple seasons of Game of Thrones. The acting is wildly inconsistent, the script is hilariously bad. The practical effects, when present, are okay. The CGI effects are sloppy and muddy. Oddly, it is pretty fun to watch and make fun of, but it is not good.

I cannot express enough how much I love this show. I normally really hate mysteries, partially because my autistic brain understands that mysteries are manipulative and deliberately withhold or redirect patterns to create tension, but this show does it well enough that I enjoy the journey. The acting is amazing and the overall structure of each episode is satisfying. The music is tense! There are enough breaks in the overall tension to keep you from burning out. It's genuinely funny too.

Its truly awful. The script is almost nonsensical with the lack of care and attention to detail; the characters shift from scene to scene and have no emotional core and no motivations. The politics are deeply conservative despite the thin presentation otherwise. It reminds me of the episode of South Park that made fun of Family Guy because it was written by manatees randomly picking idea balls.

Willow5
Dec 14, 2022
For the first 30 minutes of the first episode, you think, wow have they actually made a good Willow sequel series? Then you watch the rest, and maybe you watch the second episode, and you turn to whoever you are watching it with and say, "This is really bad, right?" They nod, and you turn it off and never think about it again. It doesn't deserve the review bombing that is happening, because it's honestly on par with a lot of tv shows, but that first 30 minutes makes it so much more disappointing.

I've watched three episodes and this is legitimately good television and a good Star Wars. There is a distinct lack of twee nostalgia nonsense present in other Star Wars shows. This is an actual story told well. There are stakes, its genuinely thrilling, and the script and acting are excellent. It's not "slow paced," it has pacing. There is a difference and this show understands pacing.

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 39
Sep 15, 2022
Season 3 of Lower Decks has really found its rhythm. It's funny, thoughtful, and exciting! Exactly what the best Star Trek is capable of. I love the characters so much and the animation is fantastic. The homages to classic Trek, especially the references to the films, are very good. You can tell the people who work on this show really care.

Moon Knight2
Sep 15, 2022
I could only watch one episode. It's extremely bad and boring. While I appreciate the attempt to make an interesting superhero drama, I can't excuse the terrible script/plot/editing. Everything about it feels icky. The whole MCU is just military/cop /capitalist propaganda.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power6
Sep 6, 2022
I've only watched one episode so far, and I'm conflicted. On one hand, the show is gorgeous and I appreciate the use of practical effects alongside CG. On the other hand, the story is nonexistent and the characters are flat. The music is forgettable, the editing is okay. For a story to be compelling you need to have things happen and characters need to make choices; so far only one character made a choice, which was to jump out of a boat. Epic /s.

The Sandman: Season 15
Aug 9, 2022
I've only watched the first episode and it was pretty boring, but relatively faithful to the comic. I don't particularly like the CGI. The actor playing Dreams physically fits the role, but i find the voice horribly annoying (gravelly voice is so 2008) and his general presence to be very underwhelming. I haven't decided if I will watch more because it just made me want to re-read the comics, which are very good, and this show is very much not great.

Yellowjackets3
Jun 23, 2022
The premise for this show has great potential. The execution is just awful. The switching back and forth between timelines every few seconds (not exaggerating, most scenes are under a minute) makes the viewer exhausted. The acting is okay, but the script has extreme issues with characterization. The multiple characters in different times has the effect of barraging the viewer with so many dangling plot threads that literally anything can happen (this is not a good thing for storytelling). What is worse, is most of the time nothing is happening! After three episodes I had to bow out. It's bad and dumb, and I feel like I'm being emotionally abused if I watch anymore.

The Orville: Season 31
Jun 23, 2022
This show is still incredibly boring and bad. It is 'star trek' for the lowest common denominator at best. The acting is atrocious, the script is the most condescendingly dull, trite mush. I am physically enraged by how awful this is and could only make it through 15 minutes before turning it off.

Stranger Things: Season 44
Jun 12, 2022
A marginally better experience than season 3, but there is no real reason for this show to exist. Initially a fun nostalgic adventure, now each episode strains the definition of entertainment with the absolute minimum of character and story every 60-90 minute episode. The streaming TV bloat is very strong with this one. A bunch of scenes with no stakes for the first 95% of the episode and ending on a cliffhanger is so played out and exhausting. The productions values are good, and the visual effects aren't terrible. Oh and it's not "strange," it's barely to the level of bad X-files episodes.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Season 15
May 27, 2022
Just judging by the first episode, this show is largely a pointless slog. It took an hour to set up a plot that should have taken 2 minutes. Its a boring nostalgia trip with bad cgi and okay acting. Instead of showing us who the characters are, the dialogue constantly tells us. At least in the prequels there was forward momentum that kept things interesting. Star Wars fans don't need all this setup and non-star wars fans aren't watching. Thumbs down (and cut off)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Season 18
May 15, 2022
This show is rad. I enjoy the return to episodic storytelling and all that characters are interesting and fun. Ethan Peck kills it as Spock. Anson Mount as Capt Pike is fantastic. Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel is possibly my favorite. I wish the special effects weren't so muddy and "realistic." Between this and Lower Decks all the old and new Trek fans should be very happy.

Star Trek: Picard: Season 23
Mar 28, 2022
Initially I was cautiously hopeful about the premise of season two. After four episodes I can say that this is the most uninspired, derivative, lifeless, boring spin NuTrek has done yet. The first season had my attention because I hadn't seen Picard in years, now I want him to go away forever. There is nothing redeeming about this trash. Nostalgia plus terrible writing and paper thin characters.

The Book Of Boba Fett4
Jan 10, 2022
Two episodes in and I am not a fan of the decision to make Boba Fett a hero. Like... Star Wars is full of heroes, it's so easy to pick one or make up a new one. Why do we need to rehabilitate the guy who got sad when he couldn't disintegrate Han Solo? I get it, we gotta humanize everything even worthless soul **** billioniares and corporations, but humanize Boba Fett??? A step too far. It's pretty boring and I don't want to watch it anymore.

Star Trek: Discovery: Season 47
Dec 24, 2021
Season 4 of Disco continues it's trajectory and lays out an overarching storyline with a lot of little plots sprinkled throughout. This season focuses much more on some emotional exploration of the characters, though the show still maintains its breakneck pace and action focused scenes. I do wish the show could slow down and not have a frenzied shootout every few minutes, but its reflecting popular media of today so I can't be too harsh. I love the characters, I love the setting, some of the stories are engaging. It's a solid show.

Only Murders in the Building5
Oct 25, 2021
Only Murders is fine. It fits into the very niche "detective dramedy" genre alongside Bored to Death and The Kid Detective. Steve Martin Short are okay reprising their comedy duo back-and-forth, but it's nothing special. Selena Gomez anchors the drama of the show and she's totally average. For a show based on the love of true crime podcasts, it doesn't quite nail any of the podcast elements, it's mostly a lazy excuse to reunite some beloved comedy legends. Shrug.

Brand New Cherry Flavor9
Oct 2, 2021
Brand New Cherry Flavor is a delightful surprise. It's compelling, dark, and funny. Don't miss out. There's a lot of comparisons to Lynch and Cronenberg, which is understandable but this is its own witchy beast that builds on what came before it rather than copies. Role of a lifetime for Catherine Keener and Rose Salazar is a powerhouse. WATCH IT NOW

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 28
Sep 30, 2021
Season Two is more comfortable in its skin and its a really fun time. The episodes are shortened versions of classic 90's trek with much more humor and it works really well. The characters are fun and there's so many nods to old trek. WATCH IT

Midnight Mass: Season 13
Sep 30, 2021
I have sat through 2 episodes and this show is exhausting and boring. The only interesting parts each episode take up 3 minutes of the narrative, which leaves 57 minutes of the most banal dialogue, uninteresting characters, and shaky camera work. Do I continue to watch? I really don't want to. It's so basic.

Star Trek: Lower Decks7
Aug 25, 2021
Lower Decks is awesome. It balances storytelling, characters, and Trek nostalgia quite well. I love star trek and I hate star trek fans, y'all are exhausting. This show has low stakes and often surpasses them. If you enjoy any modern adult animation, this is up there with the rest of them.

Rick & Morty: Season 55
Jul 20, 2021
Season 5 continues the slide into basic storytelling that made up season 4. It is difficult to craft stories that are as interesting and complex as the first three seasons, so I don't expect constant brilliance, but this era of the show reminds me of the last 10-15 years of South Park where they pick one or two "jokes" and mine them for all they're worth and make constant callbacks. Its just another show now. The animation is also taking a dive; it isn't nearly as imaginative or fluid as it has proven to be in previous seasons.

Hacks8
May 26, 2021
Update: I initially reviewed after watching two episodes and after finishing the first season I can say I was wrong. This show is great. The acting is excellent, the characters very well developed, and the humor is a great mix of old school and modern. I was definitely cheering for everyone by the end. Hell yeah, more please.

The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness1
May 14, 2021
Don't give this awful nonsense views. It's based on an absolutely bonkers """"true crime"""" conspiracy book wherein the author Maury Terry loses his mind on the page by trying to connect unsolved (and mostly solved) crimes from the 70's and 80's together into a satanic cult conspiracy. This show is manipulative and boring. It's offensive to the victims of senseless violence to imply they were a part of some underground plot. David Berkowitz is a stupid monster who lied to get attention and Maury Terry decided the lies were true. End of story.

Invincible (2021)6
May 7, 2021
Does a spectacular back half of a first season make up for the boring as heck first half? Maybe. I was won over when the stories started getting a little more interesting. I read what felt like 100 issues of the comic back in the day and the show seems to be living up to the comics. Voice acting is pretty good. Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and JK Simmons are spectacular. Everyone else kinda blends together. The animation itself is good and mimics the comic book style quite well. I'm excited to see what another season brings, though I remember the quality of stories in the comics fell off a cliff at some point. There's absolutely nothing political at all about this show. If you like superhero stuff, this show is pretty good.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Season 13
May 7, 2021
Basic. Boring. Banal. The Bad Batch is a weak effort all around. I'm sure fans of the Clone Wars series will like it but it lacks fun, excitement, and a reason for existing other than to continue cashing in on the star wars property. The 70 minute first episode drags so long; after 11 minutes i checked the time because i was certain it was bound to be over soon, alas, it went on and on and on. At one point it felt like it'd be a spin on TMNT in the star wars universe, but I don't have the constitution to sit through more to see if that's true. The animation is so boring and drab. It has the energy of the worst parts of the prequel movies with, somehow, an even worse script.

Murder Among the Mormons7
Apr 26, 2021
If you know anything about Mormons beyond the LDS Church propaganda, you know Mormons are capable of some truly heinous stuff. They want to maintain a clean image, but at their core, they are culty con-men who believe their own scam. The story of this doc carefully tiptoes around the Church of LDS and places all the blame on one man who definitely went too far. But the thing is, Mark Hofmann and Joseph Smith did the same thing, the only difference is, Joseph Smith had his followers do his dirty work and Hofmann made a ****ing pipe bomb. The doc is well made and entertaining. Check it out.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel4
Apr 9, 2021
If you followed the Elisa Lam case this doc will not be very interesting. It's 4 hours with about 35 minutes of story stretched beyond credulity with padded interviews. Its a tragic story and the internet definitely blew it out of proportion. The case is officially closed so let's leave people in peace.

Allen v. Farrow: Season 19
Feb 22, 2021
I believe Dylan Farrow. Listen to the victims of abuse. Woody Allen is a powerful, manipulative, abusive, pedophile who belongs in jail. The doc is well made and takes various perspectives of those affected.

Resident Alien: Season 14
Feb 19, 2021
I saw all I needed to know from one episode. Tudyk's performance is fine, but nothing else about the show stands out. It's very clear that Tudyk's alien trying to get along in the human world is an attempted parallel to how autistic people navigate the world. It doesn't really work, but it's less offensive than other shows. Mostly, this show is just super boring and talks down to its audience. The characters and dialogue are real cringe. The special effects are very pedestrian. Swing and a miss.
Dec 22, 2020
Ted Lasso5
Dec 22, 2020
Mediocrity at every level, which i think is kinda the point? Jason Sudeikis does a solid job being an annoyingly positive person. All the actors are actually quite good. The script is okay, not very joke heavy and whatever jokes are there are mostly character based. There are so many characters being juggled for a 30 min show they don't have much of a chance to develop in any meaningful way. It's not sports heavy enough to be a "sports" show, and it isn't dramatic enough to say anything other than "hey let's be nice." It's fluff that will manipulate peoples feelings for a few moments before you start watching something else.

Star Trek: Discovery: Season 39
Nov 16, 2020
After 5 episodes of season 3, I can say this is the best season of star trek in 25 years. The characters are established and there's so much fun and emotion to be had. The time jump has allowed some real """"startrek"""" stories to be told and everything feels more at ease and more potent at the same time. I can't wait for more.

The Vow (2020)4
Oct 9, 2020
I enjoyed The Vow until I read more about NXIVM, Keith Raniere and watched the Starz documentary Seduced. The Vow is a timid showing; it defends the high level actors in the cult who are just as responsible as Raniere. And surprise, the Vow was made in part by those high level actors. They are victims too, but they need to be held accountable for the damage they caused as well, not get a free pass because they made a sappy docuseries about it.

High Score: Season 17
Aug 21, 2020
As someone who has played and followed video game history for most of my life, High Score offers few revelations, but instead reminds me just how infused with capitalism the gaming industry always has been, for better and worse. I desperately want more video games that explore new possibilities, and the demand for profit always makes art suffer. Anyways, this docuseries will engage and entertain those who know a little about video gaming and want more. It's a very entertaining series, and the smaller stories are fascinating among larger narratives. It's especially adorable to see footage of young gamers competing and to see how excited they still are today.

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 17
Aug 7, 2020
Only one episode has aired, but its kinda fun. People are way too hard on Star Trek. It's not trying to be a perfect thing for a specific (re: reddit fanboy incel) crowd. It's doing what Star Trek has been doing lately; an entertaining show with some heart and thoughtfulness. The characters are clearly defined and formulaic and the animation is clever and dynamic. The story is typical adventure of the week, and it's pretty entertaining overall. It definitely relies on tired sitcom tropes and isn't saying anything. It's trying to be as inoffensive as possible and is missing out on actually engaging with the source material and the meaning behind what we love when we think 'Star Trek.'

Hannah Gadsby: Douglas10
Jul 9, 2020
Holy moly this is an amazing piece of comedy/art/performance. It's super smart, super funny, and super poignant. It's rare for me to be legitimately laughing out loud by myself watching a comedy special, but Douglas had me in tears. The name Douglas has been forever changed!

Harley Quinn: Season 29
Jun 27, 2020
This show is amazing. It's about as perfect of a comic book adaptation as has ever existed. It's action packed, sentimental, thrilling, funny, and isn't problematic (which is rare considering DC's track record for everything). Harley is a fully fleshed out character the story line is super compelling. Watch it watch it watch it.

Quiz: Season 17
Jun 2, 2020
Quiz is absolutely fine. It's a super watchable 3 hours and is very well written, acted and filmed. Michael Sheen is very fun to watch and is not the focus thank goodness. The show attempts to be ambiguous-ish about if the cheaters actually did the cheat or not, and it seems obvious that they did cheat, but honestly I think it's great that they cheated and mostly got away with it. It's just a game show; media steals people's labor all the time so it doesn't really matter.
May 31, 2020
Space Force: Season 12
May 31, 2020
WOOF. What a stinker. The humor is really mean spirited, and just not fun. Steve Carell is doing a really effected accent that comes of disingenuous and makes the character really hard to find charming or believable. Satire is really hard to pull off for an entire season of a show; Space Force doesn't pull it off at all, not even once during the whole season. It's like all the SNL sketches that didn't make it past the first table read all wrapped up in the veneer of "modern political satire." Do not waste your time.

The Great: Season 18
May 28, 2020
The Great is GREAT. All the performances are absolutely stellar. The story arc is super satisfying. It's funny and dramatic and full of delicious sets and costumes to gawk at. The strict historical accuracy is pretty bad, but it does claim to only be true some of the time. It doesn't matter how *true* it is, it's quite good and should be watched.
May 26, 2020
Dave: Season 18
May 26, 2020
Dave is a surprisingly thoughtful look at several aspects of society all wrapped up in **** jokes. Each episode tends to dig a bit into some angle not often spoken about, bi-polar disorder, white people rapping as racism, internet fame, narcissism in relationships, putting career above all else. It's quite genuine and funny and heartfelt, and the rapping is great. It's definitely "white, jewish, Atlanta" but that doesn't make it bad. All the performances are wonderful and y'all should watch it.

Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill4
May 13, 2020
It's absolutely standard Jerry Seinfeld. He's old now, complaining about the same things he's always complained about. That same thing is people. All the jokes are only jokes because Seinfeld is delivering them, for the rest of us it's just conversations we've had with our parents/older people we know. If you want to put something on while you play Animal Crossing, it's totally great.

Avenue 53
May 10, 2020
I try to give these prestige comedies from HBO some time to find their footing, because they all start badly, but Avenue 5 is one of the worst. Veep was at least grounded in political theater which builds comedy over time. Avenue 5 is grounded in Elon Musk's fever dreams and its disgusting. It's shiny-peak-space-capitalism with a bunch of bumbling monsters masquerading as people. I know this is the point, but it is not fun to watch at all. It is a chore and it makes me want to burn down the 1% even more. Also the sci-fi science is bad. It's like if you took Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and took everything good out of it and injected hate and stupidity.
