Heads of State1
Jul 7, 2025
I can barely understand why John Cena, whose star appeared (past tense) to be rising, would agree to work in this dreck. But I didn't know how bad things have become for Idris Elba until I watched this. I just felt so sad for Idris the whole time.

Longlegs10

I haven't felt this uneasy watching a horror movie since Hereditary. if you complain about a lack of originality in horror movies, you need to see this.

The Fabelmans10
Sep 12, 2023
Everything about this movie--especially the cast (Michelle Williams isn't a revelation because most of us already know how good she is)--is spot-on perfect. In contrast to most of his oeuvre, Speilberg obviously didn't make this movie for everyone. For those among his targeted audience, the movie is an absolute gem.

Dune: Part One9
Jun 3, 2023
I did not love the music; that's why I "awarded" only a 9 out of 10. But visually... It's incredible.

Men7

I'll admit I didn't understand a lot of it (that's not a reason, fellas, to give the movie a bad rating). Like Garland's other movies, it is beautifully filmed.

Prey10
Aug 10, 2022
I had to get past the first few minutes, which threatened a YA story and pulling punches. It's neither, there's plenty of gore. Tight running time, too.
Mar 20, 2022
Deep Water3
Mar 20, 2022
A decent movie that starts off this lifeless is trying to lull you into complacency to set you up for a big twist. I just kept waiting, watching characters I didn't care about... And then the movie ended. My rating would have been worse but for Ana de Armas's "it" factor.
Mar 13, 2022
Army of Thieves7
Mar 13, 2022
I will continue watching and recommending movies that aspire to do nothing more than entertain us for a couple of hours. There is nothing groundbreaking here, but it's just well-made entertainment.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions7
Jan 30, 2022
There's no shame in being able to turn your brain off for 90ish minutes and be entertained.

The Void3

Stunningly original... If you haven't seen the Hellraiser series or Event Horizon or, especially, John Carpenter's vastly underrated Prince of Darkness, or...

Zack Snyder's Justice League8
Mar 20, 2021
I really wanted to like it. Its biggest flaw is that it's not an MCU movie, meaning it's not even a little bit fun.
Feb 4, 2021
Raiders of the Lost Ark10
Feb 4, 2021
I've seen thousands of movies and this one stands up. Maybe the best movie ever made.

Don't Breathe9
Sep 8, 2020
This movie doesn't set out to be a classic and I suppose it isn't. But I wanted to pipe in because I think Don't Breathe hits all the right notes. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed.
Sep 2, 2020
Inception10
Sep 2, 2020
The presentation is complicated but it makes sense. Critics like Rex Reed, who don't understand a movie--because of their own limitations and not the film's--shouldn't be allowed to critique.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)3
Aug 24, 2020
I went in expecting this to be awful and--make no mistake--is was awful. Just not as awful as I had feared.
Aug 6, 2020
The Gentlemen8
Aug 6, 2020
If, as Rex Reed writes, "It was written with empty-headed desperation and directed with minimal imagination by Guy Ritchie," then why is it so much damned fun?
Jul 1, 2020
Doctor Sleep7
Jul 1, 2020
I watched the movie mostly out of a sense of obligation. I loved The Shining, both the book and, especially, the movie (it's good that Stephen King didn't pursue a career as a director). I did not expect to like Doctor Sleep the movie after slogging through the dreadful novel. The movie is flawed but there is a lot to enjoy.

Ready or Not9
May 18, 2020
This weekend convinced me that, despite my 58+ years, I have no idea what makes a movie great. Yesterday, I watched the critically-acclaimed Roma; I watched it mainly because I needed to see what all the fuss was about. I didn't hate it but, at the same time, I couldn't figure out why all the praise was heaped on Alfonso Cuaron. I just finished watching Ready or Not and I loved it. I have a question for all the art-film lovers out there: when did we stop demanding of movies that they entertain us?
Apr 8, 2020
Rambo: Last Blood6
Apr 8, 2020
The movie is EXACTLY what you expect it to be. Stallone and his team did not set out to make a masterpiece; they just want to entertain, deliver the goods, and they succeed. My only quibble is the use of Paz Vega, a legitimate actress: why did she sign on when she knew she would be wasted?

Halloween3
Jun 18, 2019
The camera work is interesting. That sums up all the positives I can offer about this movie. No logic whatsoever and one principal character (Dr. Sartain) is particularly ludicrous. I feel bad for JLC; she must be really hard up for money.
Feb 17, 2019
Hereditary4
Feb 17, 2019
The tragedy that the family faces is absolutely bone-crushing, and they could have built a good drama around that. But I never bought this as a horror movie, even though it's certainly marketed as one. I love movies and I'm even open to the occasional so-called "art movie." I can't reconcile a horror movie, which for me is largely appreciated on a visceral level, and an art film, which is mostly cerebral. If this is a horror movie, anything can be a horror movie.
Feb 10, 2019
Kingsman: The Golden Circle1
Feb 10, 2019
My wife told me she'd seen it and found it "disappointing." That word shouldn't apply to a movie that's on my list of worst of all time. It's unspeakably awful.
Dec 16, 2018
Ant-Man and the Wasp4
Dec 16, 2018
I watched it mainly to keep up with the MCU story, to be prepared for Captain Marvel and, of course, Endgame. And I loved Ant-Man. I was sorely disappointed in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Maybe I need to watch it again because I seem to be in the minority... But there was nothing original here and goofy humour wears thin after a while. And, but for the post credit sequence, you'll be ready for spring 2019 without watching the movie.
Oct 10, 2018
Lawless1
Oct 10, 2018
The pacing was too slow and much of the cast (e.g. Jessica Chastain) is wasted. But the most fatal of the mistakes is cast Shia LaBeouf in such a central role. Admittedly, it's not his fault that he's surrounded but vastly superior actors.
Jun 2, 2018
Kick-Ass 20
Jun 2, 2018
People who give Kick-Ass 2 a positive rating must have been watching a different movie than the one I saw.
Mar 25, 2018
The Brothers Grimsby8
Mar 25, 2018
I'll bet that SBC enjoyed the reaction of critics as much as he probably enjoyed making the film. Social justice warriors will hate it and that's part of what makes the movie fun.
Oct 14, 2017
Tropic Thunder10
Oct 14, 2017
The smartest comedy I can recall, which also makes it the funniest. Every scene is bursting with humour and wit--that is, if you know how to spot it. People--especially the critics, who should know better--who give Tropic Thunder a negative review are inadvertently (I guess) revealing themselves as unworthy of this masterpiece.
Aug 28, 2016
Sinister2
Aug 28, 2016
The budget must have been minuscule, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But you soon realize that the story moves so slowly because they needed to fill 1 hour, 45 minutes. No masterpiece here.
Oct 18, 2015
Evil Dead2
Oct 18, 2015
To paraphrase Tom Russo of the Boston Globe, are we really looking to Evil Dead for demonic possessions played straight? The only thing that set apart Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2 (the better of the original movies) was the insane sense of humour. Fede Alvarez's incarnation has no humour, no charm to it. Since it's not scary, I don't see the point of even making the movie.

This Is 403
Mar 13, 2015
I was stunned at how little there was to like about this movie. There is no payoff for the unpleasantness you are forced to sit through. Completely unredeeming and depressing. Consider this: Megan Fox is actually one of the few good things about the movie.
Jan 30, 2015
The Dark Knight Rises9
Jan 30, 2015
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this 3rd instalment of the amazing Batman trilogy. I would have preferred a little less JGL and more Anne Hathaway, but Tom Hardy was perfect as Bane.
Nov 16, 2014
Dumb and Dumber To5
Nov 16, 2014
I haven't seen this Dumb & Dumber sequel and, because I hold the original in such high regard, I don't plan to. But I think at least one reviewer here got it right in pointing out that the critics hated the original, giving it a Metascore of 39. The critics can't have it both ways. If a movie they ripped on 20 years ago turned out to be a comedy classic ("So you're telling me there's a chance" is still one of the greatest, most cited, lines ever), what are we to make of the sequel's Metascore of 35?

Now You See Me3
May 4, 2014
Given the movie's cast and word of mouth, I was expecting a lot more than I got. Not a total waste of time--the two female leads are gorgeous--but not far from it, either.
Jun 11, 2012
Prometheus2
Jun 11, 2012
Ridley Scott essentially remade "Alien," this time without the suspense or intelligence. I could list off the top of my head 10 unnecessary plot elements, most of which are rendered poorly. While the visuals are, at times, striking, the movie was, overall, a crushing disappointment.
Apr 16, 2011
Kick-Ass10
Apr 16, 2011
I found it utterly original and audacious. It left me feeling giddy and a little ashamed. Very funny and intelligent. And I liked it despite the inclusion of Nicolas Cage in the cast.
