It is, to be sure, a masterclass in tension, in taking things right to the edge of credulity but never over and it never forgets the power of the jump scare.

All of this unfolds like a kind of heatwave fever dream, the cicadas buzzing incessantly, oblivious bystanders to the mad psychodrama unfolding around them. It’s gripping late-night summer viewing.

What is the most I've lost in a coin toss? My belief that this was a sure-fire hit. With three superb A-list actors and a pre-existing Scorsese film to go by, you would think that it's hard to screw up. But it's dull, unfocused, and not scary in the slightest. Javier Bardem is one of the most chilling actors of our generation, thanks to No Country for Old Men, but his performance here lacks fear, believability and is overall boring. I didn't finish the series; but if after 4 episodes you are reaching for the remote rather than licking your lips in anticipation for more, one can tell it's not worth investing my time in. Dammit Apple.

These used to be A-List actors. It’s all a bit too heavy handed and morose. Unfortunately Bardem isn’t a good fit for this role—he’s handsome but he just oozes evil, and not much nuance. The plot and script lacking any subtlety doesn’t help matters much.

This Cady is a more complex, stealthier presence. There’s charm to Bardem, a tightrope walk of cunning cloaked in an undeniable charisma.

There are moments where it can feel like the story is spinning its wheels — an understandable concern when source material from a 2-hour movie or 200-page novel — and I found myself hoping Cady or the Bowdens would do something more in the moment. But despite those few bumps, the series never loses sight of its characters.

In pursuit of an expanded canvas for Cady and the Bowdens, showrunner Nick Antosca has thrown in the kitchen sink, then the tumble dryer and the aircon unit.

Cape Fear doesn't have the same creative audacity as Fargo. It's perfectly fine, I suppose, but not more than that. Frankly, I was expecting a little more, Counselor.

An A-list series that, in terms of originality, vitality, and rationality, proves an F-grade affair.

Only gets a 4 because it's so bad it's good. I almost think this is intentionally a parody of the movies. Nothing anyone does makes any sense. The writing is all over the place and you can almost see the gears turning in the writer's heads as they make the most ridiculous leaps in logic to make the story trot along. It's so cliche, melodramatic, and the bombastic soundtrack they brought in from the prior films is gut bustlingly hilarious. * Something mildly unsettling occurs... Soundtrack: DUN DUN DUN DUN!!!! DUN DUN DUN DUN!!!!

The new adaptation of 'Cape Fear,' in series form, is an absolute disaster; it becomes incredibly entertaining to watch it fall apart. Despite the decent acting, the terrible script, which insists on throwing in one twist after another, ruins everything, not to mention that it makes the characters act like idiots all the time for the sake of the story. Its social commentary on the elites and the justice system quickly fizzles out as well.

Seriously folks, this movie is bad. Do not waste your time. So bad. Everything about it is bad.

I hate everything this did to modernize this story. The motivations are diluted, the kids are too old and almost every detail frustrated me.
