An extremely special and unrelentingly powerful TV show. Adolescence is completely unflinching in its hyper-realistic presentation of so many complex issues. While the show's exploration of the influence of the "manosphere" is what has garnered it so much attention, I found that the show's exploration of so many adjacent issues and themes, as well as the subtlety with which it presented its issues, made the show that much more powerful. The only fault I personally found with this show was its insistence on continuous single takes, which I personally found distracting (despite many others' praise for this approach). But to focus any more on my own subjective view on that cinematographic decision (which, to be fair, never directly hurts the quality of the show itself) would be to detract from the utterly phenomenal acting from this show's stars. Furthermore, its exploration of the fallout of being the family of a young murderer (whether accused or convicted) is so perfectly, powerfully devastating; almost as devastating as it is to watch a supposedly bright and innocent young boy switch, on a dime, into someone shockingly and frighteningly vicious and intimidating. The temptation here is to believe that this show is informed by some near-sighted moral panic, and that it is a heavy-handed cautionary tale reminiscent of the most laughably unaware anti-drug commercials of the '80s and '90s - this show is far more nuanced. It demonstrates, with incredible tact, how the inherent misogyny embedded in our society is nestled within the way many men react to rejection; how devastating and all-consuming rejection can be for many children and teenagers; and how much agony, grief and torment the fallout from a crime like this can cause for families and parents. I have never seen any TV show do more in 4 episodes than Adolescence, nor have I ever seen a show handle a controversial social issue with such beautiful, realistic tact and nuance. I only wish we got to explore even more of the stories that began in this show - to be able to look at other people and families affected by what happened would only have elevated what is already an incredible piece of media. I hope more people choose to watch it.

A depressingly realistic portrayal of the effects social media and public school have on adolescents. The scenes can drag on from time to time since they are shot with a one-take filming method, but aside from that, the story, acting, and character roles are all very well executed, I quite frankly would put this at one of the top shows I’ve ever watched. From the up and close inner car shots to the behind the back tracking shots, we follow the story from the point of view seen by the protagonists. Bitter but beautiful, an alarmingly well done piece of media.

Racist and sexist pure and simple. People will look back on films like this with the disgust we look back on the acceptance of racism in the past now.

I was hesitant to watch this series due to its depressing subject matter, but was glad that I did because of its ingenuity, artistry and performances. Each episode is filmed in a single, one-hour take that follows characters in real-time as they are caught in the aftermath of a brutal crime. It's a staggering achievement in planning and staging as there are many seamless changes in location and perspective. Absolutely brilliant filmmaking!

Adolescent TV shows have become a genre of their own, offering a raw and often brutally honest look at the challenges that come with growing up.

Unbelievable one-takes that really makes you invested. I wish the series was more critical of society and its impact on the youth - this is only introduced indirectly.

a good series for one time, the first two episodes were very interesting, the last two were very difficult and were needed to complete the story, although they were not pleasant, but very instructive about how hard it is for people after what happened

Adolescence on Netflix is a technically impressive and emotionally intense series that doesn’t hold back. Every episode is shot as one long take, sometimes running over an hour. That alone is a massive challenge, and the crew pulls it off with precision. The school episode in particular is unbealivable; it’s hard to imagine how they even pulled it off. The performances are another major strength. The young lead (Owen Cooper), the father (Stephen Graham), and the psychologist (Erin Doherty) all give realistic and powerful portrayals. Nothing feels over-acted. These characters feel real, which is important given how serious the subject matter is. The show is about a child who commits murder, but instead of focusing on the crime itself, it looks at the bigger picture: bullying, toxic masculinity, emotional abuse, and the impact of social media on boys today. It’s about how these things can build up over time and lead someone to a dark path. It’s dark and heavy, but it’s also incredibly relevant and important. The only downside is that the tone is very slow and emotionally draining. It’s not an easy show to binge or even watch casually. But if you’re prepared for that, it’s a rewarding and thought provoking experience. But it does feel slow; keep that in mind.

I like the show because with the way that the film is shot, you would think the plot would lack in quality, but it doesn't. The show has a deep plot and it does great to show the emotional impact of the family of someone who has been accused of a crime.

It's honestly absolutely trash from end to end. The basic premises of a raid in a family at the dawn of day to grab a criminal teen is absolute nonsense. It's like whoever wrote this trash didn't even bother to do basic research before hand. Nonsense from end to end and I couldn't care more about the acting or anything else. It's barely some kind of miserabilist, or some kind of voyeurist pr0n. Give me my time back, I'm owed that much.

I had to think about how to approach this case. On one hand I could give it lower rating than I think it deserves as to compensate for all the 10s that, by reading them, I can't believe are genuine. On the other hand I could stay true to myself and give it what I think it deserves regardless. I've decided to go with the latter, thus making this review kind of useless, because it can't be used as adequate tool to help someone decide on the series based on overall score alone. I think it's a 4 and this is only assuming it is an experiment on continuous camera shots that Netflix decided to boost up to incredible social achievement. As far as camera work goes, I found it quite impressive. But as the whole plot is moving in real time I would say over 80% of the series is comprised of bloated dialogues that are needed to allow the camera to move from one setting to another. It doesn't help with the story or the characters at all. Even after 4 hours of their lives they are still as hollow to me as if I just met them. Some more politically leaning person might say they are just ideological containers. I might not go that far, but they are not well developed characters for sure. When you think about it in real life not much world-altering events happen in the span of 4 hours. If plot will be moving in real time it needs to be approached in a completely different manner, than a conventional television. Here that's not happening and so this and every other aspect of the production I consider a failure. Most of all that goes for the writing. Yeah, it seems there were SLIGHT race-swapping, which is not the first and probably won't be the last. Yeah, yeah, white man are Satans and all that... even if they are just 13 years old....?! We get it... kinda... not sure about that... By itself this wasn't a particularly big problem for me, because I'm not from the UK and the "actual" story, to the extend there is such thing, is not something I'm familiar with. I'm white and male, but I have not killed anyone, neither did my son, so it's not like I identify with any of these imaginary people. On the other hand the total lack of good storytelling, character development, and generally anything interesting to put your attention into, was a problem. For me realization that this is just BAD production came when 1 hour bottled episode with pure dialogue was not able to provide any clarity or deeper understanding of these characters, not to mention their cultural and social environment, that this series seems so insistent on presenting as a goal. And "bad" doesn't seem to be a result of the limitations on camera work and thus on the tools available to tell the story. It's just a result of a really bad idea with terrible choice for execution and no effort put into writing something meaningful. Unless you are interested in the camera-work, which for me was very interesting indeed, I wouldn't recommend this one. I'd say it exists on marketing alone.

Is it better than The Virtues (Shane Meadows, 2019)? If we forget about the filmmaking stuff—editing, shooting, acting, all that—and just focus on the story and the impact, especially how social media can totally mess up teenagers’ lives, then yeah, Adolescence might actually be better.

Mixed bag. Somtimes really good, but often too pretentious to be meaningful. It comes off as a long PSA with a very obvious **** in 2025 we still use "oners" as a way to make cinematography appear good. We need to retire one take shots as they are so overdone and just pretentious. I suspect this show is worshiped so much because the message seems written by reddit.

This movie isn't that bad if you wanna watch a film that show how social media lead can to increased crime in teens. It definitely raises awareness of the impact of social media to modern day children and adolescence (I said the title!), but the plot is pretty generic if you frequently watch crime shows.

This series is an example of monstrous lies and disgusting propaganda. The lie is hidden here from the beginning to the end. The name of the series is false - violence (both physical and moral) exists not only in adolescence. The plot was based on crimes of migrants against the indigenous population of England. The problem of illegal migrant violence against English children and ethnic crime - the scourge of modern society in Britain. If the creators of the series had revealed this theme, the series would have found a response in the common people. But the creators of the series decided to go to the mainstream and show cowardice and hypocrisy, made the main villain English schoolboy. What’s interesting - all the negative characters in the series are white men (from 13 years old and older). It’s starting to feel like racism. The main cause of violence in schools, the authors of the series have simply appointed male education and traditional male interests - sports, manual labor, meeting with friends in pub - which in itself sounds like complete nonsense. The absolute majority of maniacs, sadists and serial killers grew up without fathers, without male education. The authors of the series demonstrate an absolute ignorance of psychology. The whole argument is that "being manly is bad" - and that’s why it doesn’t work. As long as you don’t call the light dark, it won’t be. And that’s why people with critical thinking are sick of this show. The authors certainly deny racism and bias against European men - but the whole result of their work is just another attempt to destroy traditional values, exposing them as the cause of murderers and maniacs. From an artistic point of view, Adolescence is not very interesting and boring. P.s. If you still think that there is no racism towards Europeans, then answer - why do the authors of modern films make all historical personalities black? (even if they did not know about the existence of Africa) Even the Greek and Scandinavian pantheon of the gods suddenly acquired a tan skin color. But for Europeans we have only the role of murderer, maniac and traitor.

I don't know how anyone could enjoy this. The whole story is super obvious, there's really nothing in the way of a tension arc. What you see is what happened and thats about it. Meaningless scenes are drawn out to the extreme, which is also the only reason this has 4 episodes instead of being a 1.5hrs movie. Although I wouldn't give it that much screentime tbh. The actors are the only thing that kept me going, because they do a decent job.

Inspired by real-life hate crimes perpetrated by teenage boys against teenage girls, this limited series organically explores the causes of violence by young men: genetics, parenting, societal expectations, bullying, mental health, politics, online media, and more recently, radicalizing social media and the manosphere. The writing, acting, cinematography, production and sound design of all 4 episodes are stelar, but the third episode is reminiscent of how films can achieve miracle status.

This mini-series is worth watching in a single shot, but it is tough viewing and will leave you drained and depleted. If you are a parent and have had significant problems with your kids, this will be a **** punch to your **** series delves into the general social decay and malaise we see now in gender dynamics and the utter confusion and chaos that is now part of society. Many incendiary themes are explored, such as r@d p!ll, !nc@l, etc., which are designated t@xic but are now undeniably part of our lexicon and society. Putting aside the larger social commentary and the cause and effect of such things as bullying, the raw acting of this series is spectacular. Each player delivers an astounding, genuine performance, and you feel like you saw them unfiltered and honest, with no veneer of fakeness. Each episodic moment was gripping; you were drawn in.Besides awards for script and acting, I am expecting this to get feted for cinematography. The seamless shot of each episode without a single frame cut, including one particularly dizzying drone shot double transition, was utterly immersive. You are not allowed to leave the scene and moment for a single second. This is a seminal, groundbreaking mini-series and should be mandatory viewing.

Social dramas and children rarely interest me. I watched "Adolescence" because I was promised four episodes, each filmed in a single take. And that's what I got! From a directing perspective, the series is truly impressive. Especially since the one-take never becomes a gimmick, but rather meaningfully complements the dramaturgy (e.g., the car rides in episode 4).What else I liked: The acting (including the child actors) and the dramaturgy (each episode explores different time frames, the focus isn't on individual characters), especially the script's lack of interest in the crime and the usual crime plot that would follow.I didn't like anything that had to do with the manosphere, incels, Andrew Tate, etc. That could have been handled in a bad crime scene. Parental responsibility isn't addressed enough in my opinion. The dilemma is actually quite interesting: Social media is harmful to minors (and adults too, if we're being honest). And yet there are no consistent bans. And I know everyone loves episode 3, but I thought it was a bit over the top; it could have been Michael Myers' origin ****'ll be seeing a lot more from Owen Cooper in the future, I'm sure of it.

Well written, directed, cast and acted. There were a few takes that were a 10 and a few that drug on a bit too long. Some viewers will like one of the four episodes the best. Others will have a different favorite. Episode 3 was my favorite, and I would rate it a 9. This genre takes a bit of an attention span - so, take that in consideration. To me - the football story provided the nexus of the film. This is a 4-episode film. It could easily be spun off to an additional 10 episodes.

Very mediocre. Little kids singing, exaggerated tantrums by multiple characters, and unrealistic cop & internet scenes ruin the solid acting. Overall, it felt preachy. I hope this doesn't become an anthology series because we don't need more of it.

Really good until the end. I got that it seems to be written in a way that you feel as confused throughout as the parents, but I felt like the ending didn’t resolve anything.

As someone who loves psychological thrillers, Adolescence was an absolutely captivating watch. This short Netflix series was immersive, intense, and thought-provoking from start to finish. The long, drawn-out scenes were a standout feature for me—they made it feel like I was in the room with the characters, experiencing every emotion alongside them. Instead of quick cuts and over-the-top dramatization, the series took its time, allowing for a deeply raw and realistic portrayal of its themes.

Episodes 1 and 4 are excellent and show that there is certainly talent behind and in front of the screen. Stephen Graham is absolutely fantastic, and really elevates the material every time he is on screen. However, Episode 2 is so terrible that it will likely put a lot of viewers off of the show. And those who do soldier through episode 2 will be met with an underwhelming episode 3. Both of these episodes aren’t really that important, so I strongly recommend skipping them. Watch only episodes 1 and 4, and you have a 9 out of 10 show. This show should be viewed as a case study on how forced social commentary and politicalization can directly ruin the quality of a producton.

What an amazing show! The way the one take episodes are filmed are superb, in my oppinion they make us feel that eveything is really happening. Fantastic job from the actors, especially Owen Cooper in it's first acting role, Stephen Graham does a fantastic job as a father that doesn't know how to deal with all the emotions piling inside him and altough she appears only in one episode, Erin Doherty does an amazing job as the psicologist interviewing Owen Cooper's character.I believe this show has a greater impact with parents of teenagers and pre teenager children, because we know that they are more and more exposed to online risks and it's impossible to keep track of everything they're doing. The scene in wich the Detective's son explains him the meaning of the emoji language that they use, hit me big time, since it showed that it's impossible to keep updated in this type of language, these kids can always change the way they comunicate and you'll never know what's happening until it's too late. I've read negative reviews (unfairly - some of them a scoring of 1(really?) ) saying that the show is boring and not for people looking to feel good. In my oppinion the show isn't for everyone, but it's a must watch for everyone who likes the genre and for all parents. Do yourself a favor and watch it. Congratulations to all involved!!
