2001: A Space Odyssey8

Whether you get it or not, this movie will bring you to tears in a heartbeat. The stunning space visuals and beautiful cinematography only contribute to the overall perfection of this film. It includes a soundtrack consisting of old Bach symphonies and the most famous and recognizable, “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, which is used numerous times throughout the film to convey mass generational progression and the large scale of space itself. Conclusively, it’s a one-of-a-kind beauty that undoubtedly changed the way movie directors after Kubrick’s time perceived space in a cinematic sense.

I personally deem this movie flawless. The acting, story, cinematography, plot, everything about it is Invigorating. Terrence Fletcher, (J.K Simmons) the main antagonist, I find quite reasonable and interesting in a strange manner. Though his points are logistical, I think his faults arise from his tensity and temper.

I liked that one scene where the black guy was fighting dry bowser. Other than that, you could call the movie a literal piece of trash. The only way I can put it is this; a dream. Not just any dream though, a senseless, erratic dream without plot, rhyme or reason. Take that and mix it with the Nintendo franchise and boom, you have this movie. I’m considering listing this review as “contains spoilers” because what I listed is basically all there is to this movie; surface level chaos.

Here Comes the Boom8

A very funny and comical movie that always manages to make me laugh no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I, quite frankly, do not understand the proficiency of low ratings given by critics for this film. They probably anticipated it to be a life-changing Scorsese-level cinematic masterpiece. Given the cast and intermediate budget, I can safely state that “Here Comes the Boom” is a perfect, non-awkward, laugh-instilling comedy film that to this day, makes it onto my list of personal favorites.

The Dark Knight10

One of the most iconic well-coordinated films I have ever seen. The grounded realistic plot combined with the award winning score makes for an intense, epic experience. Only contributing to enthrall, the opening scene catches attention and provokes adrenaline in one of the best ways known. The acting is better than anything I’ve seen before, summed up this is a cinematic classic.

Although a full understanding for this film requires close watching and a concept of time travel, it flawlessly captures a feeling of dread and existential horror without including any visually tense or disturbing elements. It is a story alone and nothing more, and that’s why it may be dull for some and invigorating for others. Rewatch the movie twice and you’ll get the idea, amazing work of filmography.

10 Cloverfield Lane8

A very thought provoking sanity questioning horror film. The film distracts you to the very end with unimportant details and before you know it, you are faced with the truth which hits you all too fast. Very likable characters and interesting plot. The mysteriousness behind Howard’s character is invigorating.

Aronofsky’s portrayal of obsession and mental deterioration is phenomenal when played out on screen. The black and white gradients really put you in Maximillian’s place, not in focus of life or external occurrences, simply set on conclusion and resolution. The audience isn’t admiring the visual beauty of the film, they are simply living through it. That’s the genius of it.

Interstellar9

Christopher Nolan never fails to disappoint, and so is the same with this motion picture. Echoing 2001: A Space Odyssey’s stunning visuals and transcending logic, Interstellar is a beautiful take on the relationship between a father and daughter. Including large-scale space shots and the haunting fear of time, Interstellar has the perfect balance of tension and emotionality.

A fairly decent film overall but a perfect example of by-the-book emotion conveying tactics. Truly emotional movies don’t need to force emotion, it just comes naturally with the story-writing process. This movie on the other hand, contradicted that technique almost entirely. You see, a lot of times throughout the motion picture, babies would be thrown into the mix in an attempt to faze the audience or gain some sympathy. No large bonds were built with any of the characters, the drama came more from the characters accepting death more than death occurring. We have no reason to be sad, so why cry? The score did nothing to support it, all I can say is “Generic 90s Ahh Soundtrack’. I feel like this element could have boosted my rating by a great degree, but, sadly, Mimi Leder probably did not have options such as Hans Zimmer. In summary, instead of building true bonds with the characters (which would actually take some effort so why do that?) they just proceeded to kill them on screen whilst also including elements of family separation and acceptance. Poorly constructed drama but still one to remember, definitely would recommend.

The Whale10

This movie amazed me. I went into it thinking, “oh, maybe I shouldn’t have bought this movie before considering its quality”. No, I am happy to inform you that I did not regret that purchase. In fact, I went on to write an essay about that same movie right after I finished it. It may have had a low budget film, but as commonly said, necessity is the mother of invention. So was the case with this movie. The first thing I liked about it was the cinematography. I never thought I’d cherish a stationary shot of an open room. Secondly was the acting. Brilliant. The arguments seemed so genuine and upset. The conversations between Ellie and her father reflected the hatred she had built for him. Everything about it felt so human, something many movies fail to capture. And thirdly, the soundtrack. If you’ve got a chance, go take a listen to the final song in this score (“Safe Return”). The musical score tells a story of its own, I listened to it numerous times before watching the movie and became invested in watching it. The grim beauty of it all amazed me, a medley of synths, violin, and organ. Definitely check out the soundtrack. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this film (other than the proficient use of cuss words throughout). It made me tear up during the end and emotional throughout the day. It portrays the bond between a father and daughter with elements of battling addiction and overcoming temptation in an excruciating way. Great movie overall, check it out if you will.
