Greetings from Lithuania. "Strange Darling" (2023) caught me by surprise of how well this film was made. Without getting in any spoilers or plot details, I was surprised of twists and turns this film took. This is small budget film but very efficiently made one. Lead acting by Willa Fitzgerald was outstanding. Directing was very good - at running time 1 h 30 min this film was involving along the way. It is a bloody film, one to be warned. Sound design was excellent. Overall, "Strange Darling" is surprisingly well executed slow burner that is well paced, superbly acted and at the same time a bit to much "artsy" here and there. That does not distracted me from liken it.

Well written, the main protaganist's acting is superb and leaves you feeling betrayed.

“Desconhecidos” chegou discretamente aos cinemas brasileiros, quase sem divulgação, e deixou as salas tão rápido quanto entrou. Nos Estados Unidos, sua trajetória também não foi marcada por grandes campanhas. O filme foi distribuído por uma pequena empresa, ainda que carregasse o peso da marca Miramax nos bastidores. A relação entre estúdio e diretor não começou fácil: a Miramax cogitou alterar completamente o corte e até questionou a escalação de Willa Fitzgerald para o papel principal. Mas J.T. Mollner, também roteirista, tinha uma cláusula que lhe garantia o corte final. Ele manteve sua visão e, após uma exibição-teste bem recebida, o estúdio se convenceu.E foi uma boa decisão. Mollner entrega um thriller ousado, cuja maior força está justamente na estrutura narrativa que quase foi descartada. Em vez de seguir o caminho seguro de uma cronologia linear, o filme se fragmenta em capítulos — mas nem mesmo esses capítulos respeitam a ordem temporal. Começamos pelo final, passamos pelo meio e voltamos ao início, como se estivéssemos montando um quebra-cabeça ao contrário. No início, a escolha pode causar estranhamento. Mas já no “capítulo 5”, percebemos que há método na aparente confusão: o diretor revela de imediato algo que, à primeira vista, parece óbvio demais — e é justamente essa obviedade que planta a dúvida no espectador.O resultado é um jogo de atenção constante. A cada nova peça encaixada, entendemos mais sobre o que motivou cada ato e cada reação. É inevitável lembrar da estrutura não linear de Amnésia (Christopher Nolan), misturada à tensão física e atmosférica de O Massacre da Serra Elétrica. A referência ao clássico do horror setentista não é gratuita: Mollner filma boa parte da ação em áreas rurais, isoladas, reforçando a sensação de vulnerabilidade e desamparo, um traço característico daquele período.Para acentuar essa atmosfera, o filme foi rodado em 35mm, o que confere um ar nostálgico e granulado, distante do polimento digital. J.T. Mollner arriscou, venceu a resistência do próprio estúdio e entregou um filme que, mesmo sem alarde, merece ser descoberto. Um jogo de quebra-cabeça que recompensa quem decide montá-lo até a última peça.

A thriller that's just a bit different from what's usually offered in the mainstream. The non-linear narrative in various chapters is interesting and deliberately designed to mislead the viewer, who might all too quickly draw the wrong conclusions. The references to Quentin Tarantino's films are obvious. Willa Fitzgerald's acting performance deserves special mention, in my opinion. However, I couldn't discern a horror film; the hints in two tiny sequences are simply not enough. Even if the film can be interpreted as a reckoning with conventional thrillers, it still can't escape portraying the American soul of senseless gun violence and vigilantism. Therefore, my conclusion is: Yes, refreshingly different and worth seeing, but just too typically Hollywood.

This was really something different. Willa fitzgerald totally blew me away. Superb dry, surrealish humor with sadistic frightening violence. And as many good films do the writing is quite simple but focused and weighty.

Amidst so much genre saturation, it's nice to see directors trying something new and somehow breaking the mold. Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner had such chemistry in this film that I thoroughly enjoyed their performances. Willa's performance was so convincing that for a moment I forgot she was acting, and Kyle was as wonderful as always; the title of "Scream King" suits him perfectly.

Strange darling é um exercício de estilo: fatiaram o filme em seis partes, não lineares, cujo vai e vem das partes exigirá um poquinho mais de atenção, mas nada muito elaborado, dada a simplicidade e objetividade do roteiro. Também brinca com as expectativas sobre vilão e mocinha, de modo que irá pôr em dúvida o papel de cada um. O grande problema aqui é o quão didático e engessado o texto está, com frases tão diretas é como os personagens fossem 8 ou 80, tanto que o melhor diálogo do filme é quando estão no carro, num jogo que, para o espectador, não se define o papel de cad um de imediato. Assim, quando parte para suas resoluções, percebemos que é mais um filme genérico mesmo, perdendo a oportunidade de criar algo mais dúbio. Ainda assim, diverte.

'Stranger Darling' is a thriller that challenges the gender roles of this type of film and is presented out of sequence to create mystery around its protagonists. Willa Fitzgerald's extremely physical performance is the best part of the film. However, in the end, it feels like it relies too much on its narrative trick because when it's finally revealed it does not establish a convincing direction, not to mention that it's exposed as cheating.

Fantastic acting by all really, kudos to the performers. But the story is so bad. Wonderfully filmed quality, hated the story telling and the style in which the editors pieced it together. Overall experience was bad, the ending was terribly bad, want my time back. Skip it.

Absolutely riveting! I don't give out 10s, but this earned it like a mofo. Great use of time jumping and subversion of expectations. I couldn't stop watching. Horror/suspense has had a renaissance in the past half decade and is dominating ci ematic innovation. Thar and Kyle Gallner killing it the past few years make me excited for more of both. Willa Fitzgerald is also seeing a meteoric and well-deserved rise as well.

It should have been obvious during editing that the first 10 minutes are simply not good because they are stylistically very confusing... And otherwise it is a student film that tries to be sophisticated but is actually the opposite.

What a shocker. A suspenseful thriller start to end. More twists and turns than you can imagine and all make sense.

This is an interesting film and if it's 'Your thing' you'll like it. The director swung for the fences and though I found some things wanting, I appreciate it for that and will keep and eye out for his future work. It was well shot, good music and well put together with some good performaces

Strange Darling deserves the praise. The exquisite performances by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, its asymmetric narrative, and the gradual breakdown of the ingrained "male killer" trope make it an excellent film. One of the year's best.

Imagine a student film with long takes, placed out of order a la Tarantino, except with a script written by an AI app with the prompt "subvert some genre conventions to get the moronic critics giddy." And doing reverse tracking shots with ominous music does not make a good film. Kyle Gallner is the only good thing about this absurdly overrated self-indulgent poor excuse of a film. Are there good parts? Sure. About 2 minutes worth.

The thing that makes Strange Darling such an incredibly exceptional film is that it is as chaotic as it is surgical and focused with its direction. Its script is so methodical in how it's delivered and never reveals its true hand too early. It toys with the audience in a way that no other film has this year, last year or 3 years before it. It is as close to perfect a movie has been this year if only it didn't follow the cardinal sin of plotting which is "characters making dumb decisions so the rest of the plot can happen", fortunately this is more than halfway through the movie when this occurs so it doesn't completely ruin the movie, but it does keep a great movie from being a bonafide classic.

Holy crap! What did I just see? As everybody **** see this movie cold. Great use of color. Fascinating characters with realisic dialouge of 2 strangers on a first date. It's not a movie for the faint of heart, and many scenes are tough to watch, but this movie restored my faith in movies, and why I love to go. I want to feel something, and this movie delivered and then some.

Almost the first image in this movie is a woman desperately running thru the woods, a thriller staple. However, this film subverts the genre in several ways. Primarily because the narrative jumps around, parsing out pieces of the story out of order. This provides some unexpected developments that keep it interesting. Fortunately, the leads (JT Mollner & Willa Fitzgerald) have added depth to the drama with their performances and director Kyle Gallner has nurtured that intimate side of the thriller. Toss in Barbara Hershey and Ed Begley Jr. for some classic talent. Speaking of actors, Giovanni Ribisi was Director of Photography, which proudly announces in the first frame that it was shot on 35mm film (he's a big advocate of celluloid). The combo of the non-linear puzzle, intriguing performances and the unusual developments make this unique. It's not especially scary, but certainly is an intriguing psychological drama with some bloody bits.

All of the advice on this one was “go in blind”. So I did. Good for the producers, because if someone had tipped the twist I probably wouldn’t have purchased a ticket. Extreme unpleasantness & a too-clever film school script. Willa Fitzgerald fully commits & the 35mm cinematography is fine, though. The indie folk chick mewling on the soundtrack was the perfect accompaniment to wanting to bolt for the exit, but stuck it out-

Old school fun in a smart, contemporary package, including cinematography that nods to the ’70s without going all Instagram-filter. Violence is abundant, but always in service of the unending twists and turns.
