SummaryThere’s never a dull day on Japan's newly established SSSP Kaiju defense taskforce, led by Kimio Tamura (Hidetoshi Nishijima). Higuchi and Anno not only deliver the genre movie goods but also deftly preserve their title character’s sugary purity. Rather than gigantify what was always juvenile material, Shin Ultraman allows the iconic character to retain his original shape and proportions. You and your dad are gonna love the new Ultraman movie.

Tongue-in-cheek but never campy, Shin Ultraman is an object lesson in how to reboot a superhero franchise for modern times.

While Hollywood's recent efforts at reimagining superheroes are somewhat deteriorating (with films such as the terrible 2022 film Black Adam), the Japanese film industry has outdone itself by creating a true masterpiece, Shin Ultraman. Though it was produced on a low budget compared to DC and Marvel's modern hero films, it is undoubtedly superior in scope, storytelling, characterization, and cinematography.

It’s an exciting picture, a smart picture, a fascinating picture, and a wonderfully weird picture.

It’s a joyful, uplifting ode to tokusatsu and to superhero tales, and well worth a watch no matter your level of familiarity with the character.

Come for the epic ass kickings, stay for the silliness of giant monsters battling a huge metal man.

What I can’t help but miss in all this is the poetic free spirit and deep human interest that once defined most things associated with Hideaki Anno—his concerns, it seems, have shifted from individual to structural, and perhaps people just aren’t so compelling to him anymore. Higuchi’s evidently having a great deal of fun, however, and surely has more of those rubbery monsters up his sleeve. He’s doing fine.

Bright, colorful, and truly nuts, this movie is a breath of fresh air for those who are a little over the sameness of American blockbuster filmmaking.

peak fiction. one of my favourite sayings. this movie is actually incredible, it perfectly replicates what was great about the original ultraman series, while also offering something new for returning fans, you owe it to yourself to see this movie (preferably on a cinema screen if they do anymore showings)

As a fan of Ultraman, I think this is very good work, but unfortunately the content is still a little less, and too fast development. And that actress is really affecting the viewership!!!!

Not earth ****, but a fun watch. Highly enjoyable film. I think it upholds the Ultraman tradition. Plan on adding it to my collection when it is released for home video. I would pay to see it in the theater again if it was re-released.

Alright tokusatsu film with too fast pacing and lack of friendship theme, which is the main theme of this film. This movie literally feels like 10-episodes series that was converted into a 2-hours film. I actually enjoyed the action scenes, really well choreography, beautifully creative camera angles and acceptable CGI but as I mentioned above, its fast pacing obviously ruined the theme of this film. I didn't actually feel any emotional connections from any characters in this film. It also effected to many action scenes to end too soon and that made it lack of intensities as if they were ran out of budget for CGI (which factually was so). However, this is a modern tokusatsu film that aren't bad for recommending to new comers who would like to know or visit this uniquely cinematic genre.

It's the most bad movie I have ever seen. Worst fantastic movie. I don't like it.
