Poor Things is a wildly inventive, funny and provocative exploration of freedom, curiosity and social convention. Emma Stone is extraordinary, transforming not only her physicality and speech but the way a person seems to discover the world almost from scratch. Bella's almost scientific approach to life — observing, testing and drawing conclusions "empirically" — makes ordinary social rules look wonderfully absurd. Mark Ruffalo is also excellent as a man whose supposed openness is tested by a woman who refuses to live according to his expectations. Yorgos Lanthimos surrounds them with dazzling sets, costumes, wide-angle imagery and a deliberately artificial world. It can be overlong and excessively baroque, but even its excesses feel alive. Strange, funny, liberating and visually unforgettable.

The Cruel Growth of Humanity Portrayed Through a Pitiful Body: Beautiful, Sticky, and Thrillingly Alive.240522 (4.5)Emma Stone's raw and visceral performance is nothing short of miraculous, capturing the slow evolution of human history in a single body and leaving me wanting to stand and applaud throughout. The film follows Bella Baxter, whose journey from an infantile developmental stage mirrors the birth and maturation of mankind—moving from raw curiosity, destruction, appetite, and sexual desire to the aesthetic appreciation of beauty, intellectual inquiry, and finally the search for a better society beyond the individual. Her initial desire to destroy genitals and eyeballs instinctively recognizes the most fearful losses, while her adventures through absurdly imaginative settings—from cruel London, Lisbon shining with vanity, Alexandria reduced to a slum, to Marseille where a rich man instantly plummets to the bottom—brilliantly critique human nature. Duncan Wedderburn embodies the quintessential relational predator, pulling naive Bella into his gilded cage while attempting to crush her independent spirit as she outgrows him, ultimately resorting to a pathetic witch hunt when control fails. Yet Bella never remains suppressed; she learns, adapts, and embraces the world with genuine empathy, even choosing prostitution as her first job to subtly mirror human history. The brilliant supporting cast, including Godwin Baxter who learns the true meaning of fatherhood and humanity through his creation, grounds the surreal fantasy with profound emotional resonance. The whimsical visual style—featuring horse-headed carriages, hybrid animals like pig-chickens, and jellyfish clouds—complements the narrative's daring spirit. The opening imagery mirrors the ending, where a blank canvas transforms into a vibrant, weathered world colored by Bella's extraordinary journey, making it a masterwork worthy of a standing ovation.

The real poor things are those who sat and watched this in the cinema. It's a mess of a story with some great visuals, like a pig with makeup, or a video game with nothing going for it except stellar graphics.

"Poor Things" is a film adaptation of Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. It weaves a darkly comedic narrative set in Victorian-era London, exploring themes of identity, autonomy, and the consequences of scientific **** story revolves around Bella, a young woman with a complex past, who finds herself entangled in a web of intrigue and manipulation orchestrated by the eccentric surgeon, Godwin Baxter. Bella's journey is one of self-discovery, as she grapples with her evolving intelligence and desires while navigating the oppressive societal norms of her **** of the film's strengths lies in its unique visual style and atmospheric setting. Lanthimos creates a world that is simultaneously surreal and eerily familiar, immersing the audience in the dark and twisted underbelly of Victorian London. The film's cinematography, coupled with its haunting score, effectively captures the mood and tone of Gray's novel.Central to the film's narrative is Bella's character arc, portrayed with depth and nuance by the talented Emma Stone. Stone delivers a mesmerizing performance, capturing Bella's vulnerability and strength as she confronts the forces that seek to control her. The supporting cast, including Mark Ruffalo as Godwin Baxter and Willem Dafoe as General Alfie Blessington, deliver solid performances that enhance the overall quality of the film."Poor Things" is not without its flaws, however. The film's pacing occasionally feels uneven, with certain scenes dragging on while others rush by too quickly. Additionally, some viewers may find the film's dark humor and macabre subject matter off-putting or unsettling.Despite these shortcomings, "Poor Things" remains a compelling and thought-provoking cinematic experience. Its exploration of complex themes and engaging characters make it a standout addition to the genre of period dramas and psychological thrillers. Fans of Lanthimos's previous work, as well as audiences drawn to unconventional storytelling and dark humor, are likely to find much to appreciate in this ambitious adaptation.

An entertaining mess of a film. It doesn't really know what it wants to be or the story it wants to tell. It has some great acting by Emma Stone and Willam Defoe and some great CGI, but it's just let down by its script. At first it wants to be a film about a female Frankenstein but it ends up being a story about her exploring the world engaging in human pleasures and essentially becoming a human. It's good enough to watch but it's not a masterpiece or worthy of praise. I've heard people try and claim this is a feminist film but honestly its really not.

I went into Poor Things expecting something great—big-name cast, intriguing premise—but what a total disappointment. The story is a mess, the writing is lazy, and honestly, it feels like the movie exists just to show nudity and sex. At times, it’s hard not to describe it as a porn movie—just not on a porn site. Emma Stone tries her best, but even her performance can’t save the paper-thin characters or the ridiculous, meandering plot. Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe barely get anything meaningful to do, which makes the wasted talent even more frustrating. The dialogue is awkward and repetitive, pacing is uneven, and the “quirky artistic visuals” feel more like a gimmick than actual direction. The sexual content is over the top and constant, completely overshadowing any potential story or character development. Honestly, for a movie with such a talented cast and high expectations, this is one of the biggest letdowns I’ve seen in years. If you’re looking for a coherent story or engaging drama, look elsewhere—this one is all shock value, nudity, and nothing else.

I typically love films that teeter on the theatre porno, dirty side of things but, that's when ACTUAL adults are involved. Think X, Maxxxine, The Substance... When you realize this movie is about a grown woman who was given the brain of her unborn baby, it gets **** does anyone think a movie about a child (disguised by a grown woman's body) discovering sex is a "masterpiece"?! I'm sorry, you can't justify it by saying she "eventually evolves past that." The brain throughout the movie only evolves enough to make her around 12-14. Disgusting.

This movie had no interest for me. The creative sets seemed to exist for their own sake not to support or add to the story. It was like a braggart proclaiming "look how cool these sets are, aren't they cool?, how creative my story, haven't I outdone myself this time?" The director is so in love with his movie, the acting, the scenes that he doesn't realize that the movie is a bunch of boring cliches in a sloppy wrapping.

The basic plot seems to be interesting in its first moments as well as the atmosphere and the play of colors used in the film between the place where the protagonist lives and the outside world, but the situation degenerates after a few minutes becoming a film without a plot, increasingly boring as the story goes on and you can't wait for the film to end, also having a completely exaggerated duration for what it offers. The sex scenes in the film could also be functional to the story and the description of the protagonist, but they end up being the only thing the film talks about. Unwatchable and totally devoid of content

10/10 – 100/100. Uma obra-prima absoluta.

Poor things Having watched other Lanthimos films in the past I was expecting to be slightly disturbed by what I was about to see, and all I can say is that this one did not disappoint on that front. Lanthimos has a gift for surreal stories that are also surprisingly relatable, with characters that go through hell and back to discover what their true nature is, and the meaning of their existence." Poor Things "is honestly his boldest work so far and also his most philosophical, but at the same time one of the funniest. It is the mark of a director that has reached creative maturity, with a strong hold on his craft. One thing that really stood out are the superb visuals, the image was something special, with a combination of black and white and vibrant strong colours, some almost painting like. As a personal note, if you enjoyed this film, I would also recommend Boris Vian as a novelist, the nonchalantly absurd parts of this film reminded me of the surrealism in his books.

Mildly amusing for the somewhat creative way it was filmed but generally horribly on the nose story with didactic feminist and social messages more suitable for a manifesto than a piece of entertainment bluntly hammered over the audience’s heads. However, entirely expected from - an Oscar winner. The award has become a warning label of sorts recently: ‘parental advisory - explicit messaging, inferior entertainment‘

Gorgos Lanthimos has created a really good film experience with Poor Things. He succeeded in telling a modern Frankenstein story that is completely reinterpreted and is by no means just a copy of the previously known films with this motif. The equipment used on costumes, colors and scenes are shrill, but never too exaggerated or intrusive. They give the film a special character that also differentiates it from the previous Frankenstein films. Emma Stone rightly got an Oscar with her performance.

Deeply unsettling, and while I'm told that's the point, I still don't agree with a film about child exploitation being presented as a feminist masterpiece. There are heavy notes of arthouse pretentiousness and hollow pseudo-intellectualism that try to disguise pedophilic material as tasteful, and I don't buy it.

Poor Things is a visually striking film that stands out with its unique tone, blending German expressionism with elements of classic Universal monster films. The combination of impressive set design, dynamic music, and creative use of lenses (especially the fisheye) makes for an artistically rich viewing experience. Additionally, the film manages to surprise with its humor, which manifests in both quirky, offbeat moments and clever dialogue, like the doctor's remark on Bella's beauty or Bella’s playful reaction to a dead **** acting is another highlight, with Emma Stone delivering a standout performance as Bella. Initially skeptical about her role, I was quickly won over by her portrayal, especially as Bella matures throughout the film. Stone fully commits to the role, capturing Bella’s complexity and freedom from societal norms. William Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo also shine, with Dafoe’s monologues and Ruffalo’s performance bringing depth and intrigue to their characters. Ruffalo’s character, while different from what I expected, still adds a layer of enjoyment with his playful **** film also offers sharp social commentary, particularly regarding society's pressures and its impact on personal freedom. Bella’s journey challenges societal taboos, exploring themes of body autonomy and sexual freedom. This is further emphasized through a metaphorical portrayal of capitalism, seen in a memorable scene involving a woman in a prostitution house. While the film’s themes are dense, they are never dull, with the narrative holding attention throughout. However, not everything works perfectly. One of the scenes that didn’t resonate for me was Bella’s emotional moment in Alexandria, which felt oddly flat despite its potential for a strong impact. There were also moments when the comedy didn’t quite fit, such as after a major emotional event, where humor felt out of place. Additionally, while I enjoyed Ruffalo's performance, I was surprised by the lack of villainy in his character, which I had **** film’s ending left me with mixed feelings. While I appreciated the vengeance Bella took on her first husband, the resolution left me uncertain about where the story was headed. The relationships at the end felt unresolved, and I wasn’t sure if the doctor was truly the right partner for Bella, or if her future lay elsewhere. This ambiguity in the ending makes it hard to fully evaluate the film at this point.Overall, Poor Things is an unconventional and bold film that combines dark humor, striking visuals, and social commentary. Despite a few missteps, it’s a movie worth seeing, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and thought-provoking.

This is one of the greatest movies that I've ever seen! It's also THE greatest porno film ever made! I can't believe it received an R rating! The amount of every kind of sex imaginable on display makes "The Devils" look like a bawdy romp! This is a much funnier film than "The Devils" though, and much more erotic. It's filled with memorable performances, but, as you've probably heard already, Emma Stone's is not only great, it's for the ages! It automatically puts her among the highest echelon of actresses (if she wasn't there already)! The plot is hard to describe and, like me, you should watch it knowing as little about it as possible the first time. On repeat viewings, and you'll definitely want repeat viewings, you can concentrate on it's beauty, hilarity (I can't recall another film that had me crying with laughter so many times) , incredible costuming, and set design, and above all else, in Bella, the funniest, most intelligent, dumbest, and lovable character that I can recall in any movie (and, yes, I've seen "Forrest Gump", and I do mean that as an insult to that piece of crap)! Not all viewers will feel the same way about it as I did, it's just too bizarre, not to mention, dirty. However, give it a try, at the very least, you've never seen anything like it!

This film was very disturbing. Stopped watching after about 25 minutes. What disturbs me the most is the popularity of this film despite the main character who is on a very unambiguous sexual journey despite having the mind of a baby. What is going on?

Like all of Yorgos Lanthimos’ films, Poor Things is utterly absurd and yet deeply human. Ostensibly it’s a film about womanhood without the learned baggage and restrictions that by adolescence, one is encumbered, shaped or shackled by. And it works best when it is exploring these ideas and less so when it is delving into the grotesque. It has more than a fair share of the Jean-Pierre Jeunet about it and the stylised sets, backgrounds and costumes are warped and beautiful in equal measure. There’s a wonderful use of lenses that plays with forms of fisheye and other techniques that is fun and the interplay between music, sound and silence is a simmering delight. Obviously Emma Stone is incredible, the way she intones language like it’s Shakespeare and struts about learning without allowing herself to be shamed. Less obviously Mark Ruffalo almost steals the show and devolves slower into childhoodness as Bella does adulthood. It’s stunning to look at, a bravura of acting talent and writing, it is incredibly funny, one of the most brilliantly funny movies I’ve ever seen. But it’s just not for me. I can appreciate it, I can admire it, I can enjoy it once, maybe twice, but it’s just not mine to adore.

The movie is decent with a good cast but the story is overshadowed by the movie being a "softcore" porn of Emma Stone. The amount of sex scenes and full nudity throughout this movie doesn't really add anything to the plot it just makes the viewing experience uncomfortable.

Visually stunning and intellectually challenging, feels like a 90 min movie (actually runs for 140 mins), every frame is pure creativity, you feel how everyone involved became engulfed by the director's vision and that joy, that passion, that energy, leaps from the screen and into your eyes, brain, and soul. P.S. **** the patriarchy

Sehr kurioser Film!

The humour of this film is the only redeeming quality which did make me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. However, that is about where my compliments end. The feminist themes of the film are about as subtle as lemon juice in a papercut and fail to make a meaningful impact or leave a lasting impression to be pondered over. The lack of vilification Bella Baxter receives for her adventurous sexuality may be groundbreaking if you're over 40 but is met with a shrug and a 'so what' from a younger audience. I do like the imagery and performance overall, I just struggle to get on board with the story as a whole. Overall I would not recommend this film but do go and see it if you think women making their own choices in life is a novel idea.

Lots of mental incompetence in these reviews from the audience and critics alike. This is not a “pedo film”. This film is extremely feminist and idiotic. It doesn’t exploit women or their sexuality or anything of the sort. It’s your typical 21st century love letter to female promiscuity while also showcasing men as weak lesser beings whose sexuality is somehow below women’s. It’s the same old ****. We’ve seen it before literally over and over and over again from Hollywood since the 70s. New ideas and differing opinions as we know are not allowed. Just the same old Jayish propaganda we’ve been fed since World War Two. What I took from it is that women are special beings, somehow above their symbiotic counterpart and that men are to be used and discarded however is seen fit to advance a woman’s good time. All the other themes are muted and just there to somewhat create a story, but it’s all just childish and silly. No real emotions are felt nor lessons learned. Not much comedy or drama either, just the typical feminist message in your face from start to end. On a positive note the movie is fun to look at. Plenty of bizarre set pieces and costumes, plus you get to see Emma’s **** and feet for pretty much the whole movie. Might as well enjoy something about this drivel.

Poor Things In filmmaking, injecting comedy can be a hit-or-miss endeavour, often feeling forced or overly contrived. However, "Poor Things" effortlessly sidesteps these pitfalls. Its comedy flows naturally, buoyed by sharp dialogue and standout performances. The dialogue is so captivating that I found myself hanging onto every word, fully engrossed in the film from start to finish. Poor Things starts with pizzazz and even by the second half where the plot becomes more profound, its charm remains unbroken. Poor Things earns applause on multiple fronts, starting with its exceptional costuming. Bella Baxter's character comes alive with vivid clarity, thanks to the impeccably structured and colorful dresses she wears, each one more stunning than the last. Another high mark to be found here is in the camera work and angling. Praise should also be given to the production designers, art and set decorators, and makeup department. All these are capped with a brilliant direction from Yorgos Lanthimos. The world he presents is picturesque, strange, and rich. Many times movies serve style over substance but Poor Things is a delightful dose of both. With excellent pacing, it seamlessly transitions through tone shifts without sacrificing its essence. The film explores various themes, adeptly handling coming-of-age elements, and while its feminist messaging may not be flawless, it remains a commendable addition to the genre. Emma Stone, already regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation, continues to astonish with each new role she undertakes. In Poor Things, she fully embodies the character of Bella Baxter, showcasing her remarkable talent once again. Mark Ruffalo's onscreen suffering delivers some of the most memorable comedic moments in recent memory. Completing the ensemble, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef deliver equally impressive performances, rounding out this stellar cast. Poor Things is a rare gem, a bold and sensual journey that defies convention. Its unabashed portrayal of sexuality and audacious storytelling set it apart, making it an experience that defines cinema. 9.5/10

An extraordinary madness. That's the only way to define Poor Things. And it really is madness. Poor Things is like seeing life through a surrealist painting. Forget about a rational story development. The film will take you through a world, between magical, philosophical, and psychedelic, to tell you about the development of the personality of Bella Baxter, whose existence will cause a lot of confusion from the moment the viewer meets her. The story, despite being fantastic, is not positive. You will enter the mind of a depressed philosopher who tells his vision of life (full of vices, pleasures, and injustices) in something similar to a dream. Everything is well done here. The acting, the costumes, the set design. Little or nothing bad can be found in this film, which, although it shines, its plot and messages are sad and gray. Personally, I do not share the sad vision of the world as it is narrated here. However, I enjoyed this work of art every second. THE GOOD. It is like entering the dream of a philosopher who tells us how life is. THE BAD. It is a great work of art, but it does not have that climax that would make this film a 10. It is a good work, but not immortal. THE EXTRAORDINARY. Emma Stone's performance.

It’s a film who wants us to be stunned. And in a certain way it succeeds. But the awe last for just a while. Then the plot becomes stunningly didactic and paradoxically moralistic in his attempt in not being that. Remarkable are Emma Stone’s performance and the graphic imagery that, anyway, owes a huge debt to Burton’s movies like Beetlejuice or The nightmare before Christmas. And, yes, there’s a parallel with Everything everywhere…both are like cotton candy: once you taste ‘em in your mouth…they just melt away .

A really uncomfortable but inside full movie that makes me questeding many of the things in my **** in a good way, I like the dark humor the visual body horror. The dark and Real sexual themes of the story that I really f** enjoyed and was interested **** the music added to it. Had sound of that instrument. I can't even name but froed me off my pace every time I heard it and the visuals are gorgeous. It feels like a picture more than a movie in like dreamy, but beautiful **** the woman actor is amazing and is willing to do so many nudity scenes and everybody is doing nudity. It's so awesome they willing to be this exposed on camera .I really enjoy the talks of philosophy and all the taboos objects the movie takes on and women owning the means of production that is there bodies.
