While it would be unduly dismissive to write off Night of the Comet as a cult film merely by association, a good bit of its ancillary charm is obviously owing to its resonant casting choices: Reuniting Beltran and Woronov in the wake of Paul Bartel’s blistering black comedy Eating Raoul adds extra spice to the one longish scene they share.

Night of the Comet is a successful pastiche of numerous science fiction films, executed with an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek flair that compensates for its absence in originality.

Night of the Comet (1984) is an EXTREMLY fun time with charismatic and VERY entertaining characters, interesting premise, executed in a great way, fantastic performances, cool story, lovely effects, monsters, kick ass cinematography, and a **** soundtrack!! If the 80s was a movie!!In addition (and this is just to praise the movie more, but also show another poster for this awesome movie) to all of this, the movie is filled with so much **** end of the world never made me smile so much.Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney play an outstanding sibling duo, and make it so believable, fun, and emotional, with Robert Beltran adding a lot of light hearted fun. Everyone delivers and I LOVED IT!

A unique mixture of horror and comedy. I found it refreshing especially for the budget but it is not a masterpiece. The story evolves around a rare transition of a comet which happen only every 65 million years. Anyone with knowledge about Dinosaurs will say “Wait a minute. That time span is familiar” ;-). However the two sisters Regina ans Samantha care not much about the event and will be surprised on the next morning. It is hard to navigate around the spoilers and even Metacritic seems not to care in its description. The movie is unique in its set up to be remembered. Also the characters, humor and moral dilemma was more than enough to kept me watching. The cast is excellent and the main characters played by Catherine Mary Steward and Kelli Maroney should be praised. For the effects I will say for a 700.000 $ movie they did also a fantastic job. They manage to create dread and fear. Do not expect this to be on the same lever as bigger production (Even if more modern movies fail in that regard). The humor works well and they manage that the serious and humorous parts don't harm each other. Overall I think this is worth to watch for the unique setting, characters and story. An entertaining movie that is memorable. I give an 8/10.

A good-natured, end-of- the-world B-movie, written and directed by Thom Eberhardt, a new film maker whose sense of humor augments rather than upstages the mechanics of the melodrama.

B-movies are the great anchor of American film. They're what we do best. And Night of the Comet, like Blood Beach and The Howling before it, honors the form even as it fails to transcend it. Things go bump in the night, characters exchange improbable dialogue and a good time is had by all even as the world comes to an end. [28 Nov 1994, p.B6]

Eberhardt's hand isn't sure and Night of the Comet wobbles in its orbit. [16 Nov 1984, p.21]

A cheaply made science-fiction movie that enters the atmosphere without ever igniting.

This is a movie which makes its viewers feel ripped-off just for expending a snicker. Camp, satire, sci-fi all have their own rules, rigorous ones at that, but Night of the Comet violates even the codes of trash. Point of view shots point to the wrong views, the cutting is as blunt as stone and the way Eberhardt bleeds the sex appeal out of the sex is the film's only real vision of the end of the world. This was pretty good, has that nice amber photography that was big in the 80s. Catherine Mary Stewart has a good strong character, together with The Last Starfighter she had a good run. 80s horror had a lot of high marks, this isn't top tier but it's solid fun.

I loved how the movie connected the comet to the disappearance of dinosaurs. It could have been more dramatic and mysterious. The comedy side of the movie decreases the must-be-tense situation.
