Neighborhood Watch has a conventional story motif: the unlikely duo who can barely stand each other, team up and despite their own misgivings, in the end discover something about themselves that surpasses their original goal. It may be formulaic in its composition, but there’s comfort in this predictability.

If you’re intrigued by watching Jack Quaid and Jeffrey Dean Morgan come together to solve a mystery, then Neighborhood Watch will not disappoint. When you get a comedic pair together like Laurel and Hardy, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, or Jack Quaid and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it’s timeless.

This film is no masterpiece; far from it. It’s not exactly intelligent or logical, but it has a certain charm and two truly great actors who play their roles wonderfully. It was a genuinely welcome change of pace, and I’d be happy if there were at least more films like this, because right now, 99% of what’s being made is garbage.

Jack Quaid and Jeffrey Dean Morgan give heartbreaking and sometimes hilarious performances as two men who need to prove to themselves and everyone around them that they can save the day.

One is hard-pressed to understand why grown-up thrillers like this one don’t get bigger pushes, but if you’re a “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” type when it comes to genre, do have a look at this. It’ll very likely hit an old-school sweet (or sour) spot or two.

There’s no great effort at building tension, or orchestrating major setpieces. But the narrative moves along at an engaging clip, and there’s a pleasing emotional payoff to the way things ultimately come together in Farley’s screenplay.

The film is a genuine pleasure to watch, especially for fans of either or both of the leading actors.

Neighborhood Watch has a tolerable story that is greatly uplifted by the performances of Quaid and Morgan. It is tolerable but can feel slow and predictable.
