Cute and comedic, but with a heavy dose of Lifetime Original energy (notably, source author Whelan cut her teeth as an actress in such vehicles), My Oxford Year may not be subversive, but it is serviceable.

Ms. Carson is a photogenic commodity to have in your film; so is Oxford, and director Iain Morris (the rebooted “Time Bandits”) balances the visual dimension of his film upon these twin resources.

What should be a tender, feminist-minded story centered on a young woman rediscovering her dormant childhood dreamer turns into a middling melodrama about being with a cute guy in desperate need of her rescue.

Their relationship plays out mostly to set up the film’s second half, but even when things get juicier, Mylchreest and Carson can’t seem to find much chemistry through the flat writing and direction.

It’s all boringly plain sailing until it suddenly isn’t and the film takes a turn from romcom into something more dramatic.

The couple doesn’t quite light up the screen with their chemistry, and the writing feels much too basic, given these are meant to be characters in a literature degree program. Thankfully, there are moments of levity, a number of cross-cultural jokes, and supporting characters to lighten the mood.

Even with a literary atmosphere and a steamy romance, the fact that My Oxford Year blatantly feels comfortable exploding emotional minefields for narratively unclear reasons clouds its potential success as a basic but inoffensive rom-com.

Oh yea. The WOKE movie Plainclothes gets a 65 rating with user ratings blocked while this gets a 39 rating. Right. This movie wasn't bad for typical romance movies. Although I have to agree with the user ratings of a 5.4 as I wouldn't give this more than a 6 since the leads didn't really gel together. Our view is "watch if you're willing to watch this tripe but otherwise wait for something with a little more meat on the bones."

My Oxford Year tries to sell itself as an emotional romantic drama set in a postcard-perfect setting, but neither its scenery nor its attractive cast can hide the obvious: this is a flat, prefabricated, soulless film. The story leans on every young adult romance cliché—improbable love, culture clashes, personal discovery—but does so with such lack of energy that it becomes **** chemistry between the leads is almost nonexistent, turning every supposedly emotional moment into a weightless formality. Even the supporting cast, with seasoned actors who could add gravitas, seem trapped in a script that gives them nothing interesting to say or do.Visually, it delivers, with Oxford and other British locations looking like a tourist brochure, but the pretty packaging can’t make up for the narrative emptiness. The film tries hard to feel moving, but everything comes off as artificial and forced, as if it were trying to force tears without earning them.Ironically, one of its most memorable moments has nothing to do with the plot, but with the appearance of Coldplay’s Yellow, which at least stirs something amid the boredom. Beyond that, what remains is a forgettable exercise that doesn’t even qualify as a “guilty pleasure”—it’s simply dull.

Who writes this garbage? For whom?? Even the shots of the location were lazy and lame.
