Gripping, intriguing, and well-paced, Mary overcomes most of the issues with its overwritten script to emerge as a serviceable entry in the genre’s canon. Sure, the film lists from time to time, but it always manages to right itself when it matters.

The idea of this boat as a last-ditch play to save a marriage is fine as an inciting incident, but it ends up steering the story way too much. Oldman and Mortimer play the drama in “Mary” well. Too bad they don’t get much chance to play the horror.

Michael Goi, serving as both director and director of photography, does a better job placing the camera around the claustrophobic location than he does exploring the depths of his actors.

Goi and his screenwriter Anthony Jaswinski must have thought that simply stuffing the film with as many shock tactics as possible would suffice. It doesn’t. This ship goes down with her captains.

Director Michael Goi is big on jump shocks that get increasingly tiresome.

Narrative ellipses and a slew of visual clichés — like vague shapes, ghostly footprints and disorienting flashes of light — make Mary (the name shared by the ship and the couple’s younger daughter) a particularly unsatisfying possession yarn.

At the movies, bad things happen to good people all the time. But it’s especially lamentable to see two sterling silver talents of the caliber of Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer trapped in a mindless trifle like Mary. It’s a watery tale of supernatural nonsense at sea as lost and immobile as a beached mackerel.

As I said for what he did in Killers Anonymous, I guess Gary Oldman doesn't mind dragging his name and his talent while being paid. I cannot argue that I know anything about his quality of life or his finances but definitely an actor of his caliber should be able to find better projects with a decent pay. This lame excuse of horror and supernatural suspense doesn't go anywhere and doesn't achieve even the most basic to entertain.
This is not a disappointment, this was a disgrace.

Disappointing for a potentially what could have been a great movie. Great actors but it's like they themselves have a hard time believing their characters. It's confusing and never tells you exactly what this 'May: entity is
