If there's one thing going for Last Action Hero, it's the construction of it all. Even if this intermixing of kid fantasy and adult shoot'em-up, Hollywood insider jokes and cheap Arnold puns, doesn't completely bowl you over, it's clever and intriguing.

For all of its sensational stunts and flashes of wit, however, Last Action Hero plays more like a bright idea than like a movie that was thought through. It doesn't evoke the mystery of the barrier between audience and screen the way Woody Allen did, and a lot of the time it simply seems to be standing around commenting on itself.

Greetings from Lithuania.
"Last Action Hero" (1993) isn't just an entertaining action / adventure / spoof film staring Arnold Schwarzenegger - it is more then that. In my opinion, this is one of the most brilliant parodies ever made and it also serves as a love letter to movies themselves. The idea of this movie is ingenues - it's a fantasy film set withing a world were traveling to a movie is possible. And that what happens to our main hero in this film - he is get **** into a movie staring his god Arnold Schwarzenegger. And from there it goes more and more funny and bizarre - and i will leave it at that. The film plays as a parody, fantasy, action, adventure and comedy - set in two different worlds. The script is clever enough to show these worlds very differently. Its a film within a film - made of movie buffs. Overall, this film flopped heavily in 1993's box office not because "Jurassic Park" opened closely or whatever. After multiple rewatches I've made of this film over last few decades one thing is clear for me - this film never had an massive targeted audience to begin with. If it had opened today in 2025 it would have flopped even more. This film is for movie buffs - it is a love letter to those who love movies. "Last Action Hero" is one of the most unique and entertaining films I've seen.

The movie isn't mindless; it just has a mind that's a bit junky and muddled. And to their credit, Arnold and his collaborators haven't played it safe. Last Action Hero is a stretch. Unfortunately, it's a stretch that proves the star wasn't that elastic to begin with.

This movie-within-a-movie action-comedy spoof is a too long, too loud tease as it toys with the Schwarzen-dude's well-toned cinematic image. [18 Jun 1993, p.1D]

The film tries so very hard to be The Movie of Summer '93 that it almost makes you sick for what could have been, what should have been, and, in the end, what it is: soulless sound and fury -- action in a vacuum.

Last Action Hero starts out mostly nuts, and winds up mostly bolts. Or, rather, winds down. That's a problem with pastiche: it must be constantly jump-started with ingenuity, and even that ultimately pales. By the end, nothing matters. [21 June 1993, p67]

The script is weak and unrelenting. The stunts are unspectacular. The special effects are nothing you haven't seen before. But worst of all, there's the spectacle of Schwarzenegger glorying in the wonder of Schwarzenegger. [18 Jun 1993, p.C1]

I liked the idea and it was interesting to watch, but some parts were just too cheesy (and I do not mean the parts where they did it on purpose, that was good) - like whole weird shooting effects and all that. Maybe in 90s would have appreciated it more, but watching now can feel them being a bit whacky.

There were many funny scenes, especially when they made jokes about movies with Schwarzenegger and the story is also interesting. But the young boy **** so much.

Had this movie been rated +18, I would have given it ahigher rating. Trivialization of death, young women in scarce clothing, implicit endorsement of disobedience to parents and superiors...
