O filme começa com uma pegada meio "sabor da vida" e mergulhando nos riscos do empreendedorismo da protagonista, por mais antipáticos e maniqueístas que seus investidores/sócios sejam. Mostra a necessidade de uma América preta livre, no sentido liberal do termo. O problema que o roteiro não sabe desenvolver o suspense e o sobrenatural naquele furturo restaurante (um restaurante numa mansão abandonada, ou seja, o velho clichê da mansão sendo reciclado aqui). São inúmeros os sustos com os insetos por exemplo. Da mesma forma, ao desenvlver o tema da bruxa e de associar isso ao protagonismo feminino, o filme até tenta uma abordagem mais interessante, mesmo com um clímax forçado e irreal, tratando os demais personagens como robôs e tendo um péssimo domínio do espaço. Isso aqui nas mãos de um Robert Eggers ou de um Ari Aster ia ser bem interessante.

House of Spoils made me appreciate Ariana DeBose. Although the film is intriguing when it comes to the culinary arts, it falls short in the horror aspect. I can say I watched it without getting bored, mainly because of the cooking element.

Rarely does it ever genuinely feel like a horror movie at all, in fact. Instead, it’s more like a halfhearted feminist kitchen drama, with the occasional “scary” beat inserted under protest, a horror film via technicality of labeling and marketing rather than any particular intent. It wants to be just about anything but.

The film feels like it's making use of storytelling devices and clichés that have been used over and over again in other stories. The end product is something that is serviceable and easy to digest, but also far too familiar, lacking any major innovations.

House of Spoils suffers most from genre hybridization. The more explicit horror moments feel grafted on to what is essentially a character study with mystery elements. But as “Speak No Evil” recently demonstrated, Blumhouse no longer signifies low-budget, terrifying horror. The brand has become shorthand for movies lacking clear identities.

'The Bear' meets 'American Horror Story.' The mix may sound delicious, but the result is bland. Blumhouse just can't deliver now. And Ariana DeBose needs to hire a new agent ASAP because she's made nothing but forgettable movies since she won the Oscar.
