Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1

Chapter 1 of this undertaking is imperfect, at times meandering and once or twice confusing, but it is never boring and never feels over-long. And it is spectacularly beautiful to look at.

Costner and company know the importance of visual and sonic storytelling. In this film, the score, landscapes, and set pieces guide the stories along when the dialogue is limited, helping us to connect to the overall experience emotionally.

Horizon—while being at least somewhat culturally sensitive, handsome to look at, and reasonably engaging—still comes off as curiously undistinguished. It’s so tasteful, so careful, so eager not to upset or offend, that it reflects little sense of risk.

It’s easy to smirk at these and other miscues; Costner also has a weakness for speeches, like many filmmakers. But he has a feel for the western and the landscapes of the West, and among the good scenes mixed in with the groaners is a beautifully filmed chase set against a midnight-blue sky that finds two riders galloping after a third, who changes horses mid-chase.

Working from a discursive screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Baird, Costner is not at his best as a director with this kind of multi-branched narrative. He struggles to keep all the story’s plates spinning, as characters are sidelined and resurface with too little connective tissue.

A lot is going on all at once, but little of it coheres into anything substantive, let alone actually memorable or meaningful.

The film is all table-setting, with the stories lacking in polish and dramatic momentum and the characters never developed beyond archetypes.

Horizon: Uma Saga Americana – Capítulo 1 é um faroeste visualmente impressionante, mas que sofre com problemas narrativos e de ritmo. Kevin Costner claramente tem paixão pelo projeto, mas o excesso de personagens e subtramas torna o filme cansativo e **** você gosta do gênero e tem paciência para histórias de ritmo lento, pode valer a pena assistir, principalmente pelo visual e pelo esforço de trazer um faroeste clássico para o cinema moderno. It's a mixed bag with this one. There are aspects that are good but it's a mess of a story. Maybe these story elements will come together but you are asking a lot from the audience to stay along for the ride.

Nothing special apart from the realization that dentists must have been pretty good in the Wild West. You don't see so many perfect white teeth anywhere else. So much for authenticity....

É sério que vão ser quatro capítulos disso? Um tédio enorme, filmado com vergonha de mostrar a que veio, fraco. Merece uma estrela a produção de arte, e a fotografia também está lúcida, mas o excesso de personagens, o roteiro, o diálogo, tornam as 3 horas intermináveis, sem contar que já vimos isso aqui em tantos outros filmes...
