The main release is effective but broad and saccharine. The Minus Color edit is superior. Exposition and emotion that feels childish in color feels dramatic in black-and-white.

Dans un japon de l'après guerre il revient traumatisé dans sa ville qui a subit les bombardements japonais, mais ce fait juger car il n'a pas réussi ça mission de kamikaze et n'a pas d'honneur . Mais après 2, dans un petit travail de déminage dans la mère il fut confronter a son traumatisme, godzilla. Ce film est vraiment bon avec de bon effet spéciaux un jeu d'acteur un peut trop poussé et tous ça pour un petit budget ( 15 millions)

Just a good godzilla movie. He looks like a badass and cant wait for a sequel with another creature to fight. Good storyline as well.

No silliness here, just the horrors of war and nuclear destruction. If Shin Godzilla focuses on the failure of bureaucracy, Minus One deals with the disregard for human life in Japanese society during WWII, as well as the lasting impacts on the individuals that survived. The human characters deliver a good story that keep things interesting even when there's no havok being caused by the radioactive dinosaur. Godzilla is once again a menacing and unstoppable force of nature that forces Japan to face a huge threat to its territory with no outside assistance (or any military assistance for that matter). As much as I love Shin's, Goji's atomic breath has never been this threatening. The whole scene as **** iconic theme plays is just beautiful. Minus One keeps things fresh for the franchise, all the while respecting everything that came before it. And, for a 15 million dollars movie, it looks and sounds much better than many Hollywood blockbusters out there.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Godzilla Minus One" (2023) is a first movie i have ever seen about the famous monster which was made in Japan. I did see all of Hollywood movies, but i won't mention those here, because "Godzilla Minus One" is a different kind of movie - in a best way possible.I really enjoyed the story here and characters. I found them to be compelling and i was rooting for them. Sequences with Gojira were truly spectacular and amazing - no wonder this movie won the academy award Oscar for best visual effects of the year. They reminded me of some great movies way back were the characters and story were in a first place and then great special effects in between enriched the movie. This film its not CGI fest like in Hollywood flicks - they are far and in between, yet they evoked the sense of awe.Overall, i really enjoyed "Godzilla Minus One" on nearly every level. Amazing visual effects, and truly simple yet good story with characters you will root for. Great movie.

If anyone plans to watch this movie, please watch it in subtitles. The emotions the actors portray without speaking English is incredible. This isn’t the fun that the American Godzilla is. This is a story of tragedy and a warning of what is to come if nuclear power isn’t halted. Godzilla Minus One is a war story, a showcase of why wars are so detrimental for humanity and why the usage of nuclear bombs should be prohibited

This film looks amazing, definitely the most beautiful Godzilla film so far. The CGI is mostly amazing with some effects just good. This would have been way better if it had been 30 minutes shorter. There is so much time spent hammering home character development, we got it way quicker. The absolute highlight of this film was when Godzilla attacked Ginza, the music was amazing, the effects incredible, I think this moment was my absolute favourite from any kaiju film ever. The Ginza attack totally made this film, without it I think I would think of this film as below average because without it there is way too much talking and not enough city smashing. The ending is fantastic too with lots of action and emotion. It’s quite a bleak kaiju film for most of it, I kinda miss the fun Japanese ones.

Firstly, not a godzilla fan(what is that even)? But this movie is average at best. The only thing to note was that the effects were OK, and i guess that a plus cause they had a small budget. BUT the rest is drivel. The plot? It will take me less than 20 seconds to explain the "plot". To call this a "story" is an insult to the concept. Acting was largely ****, with the lead actor being a total amateur. Character development is wafer thin, with all the characters being super chums with like 2 or 3 scenes of them actually engaging with each other. I guess ppl think its refreshing, due to the absence of hollywood cheese but it's still terribly contrived in its seriousness and emotional tone. It's not that is really bad, its just kind of boring and lame.

An impressive monster movie with a serious plot its peers are often lacking. The special effects are top notch for its budget and put Hollywood to shame. However, the occasional overacting and the strange reason for nobody coming to Japan's aid soured the experience for me slightly. The ending made up for almost all of it though.

Extremely woke in between Godzilla shots. Weak coward character, living with a woman not by choice and a kid whos not his own. Hes not in love,get nothing in return and makes a scene when she wants to find job and will be a girl boss saving him and back with more surprise in the end. Im not even talking how much cultural heritage violation this movie brings. Basically saying government was anti-people in ww2 and that the japanese honor and sacrifice where idiotic... I am extremely disappointed. Destroyed my physical copy after watching it. Damn, really? What have you become Japan? That is the model you want to show to your future generation? Fxkk not in my house.

This movie goes to the roots of the franchise; japan set kaiju flick with traditional styled visual effects. The core themes of the franchise set in post war japan and the parallels it has with atomic bombs and its effects on a society. These themes are completely absent in the Hollywood Godzilla movies. A must watch for people to get a feel of the original Godzilla movies without having to watch those archaic movies of yesteryear.

AMAZING. This was one of my favorite movies of 2023, and is one of the best Godzilla movies I've every seen. I would definitely recommend, and even if you don't like the typical Godzilla movies that much, this is still a 10/10 with its storytelling and cinematics.

Following the critical success of 2016’s Shin Godzilla, which documented the government response to an evolving reptilian natural disaster, Godzilla Minus One shifts the spotlight to a much finer point. Set in the aftermath of World War II, as a comprehensively defeated population struggles to cope, this film’s best moments examine the devastating private ramifications of an up-close encounter with the beast. Failed kamikaze pilot Shikishima had a chance to machine gun Godzilla during an attack on a remote military outpost and couldn’t pull the trigger. Although we’re later shown that such a weapon would’ve probably been useless, he considers the inaction an indictment and adds it to his laundry list of dishonorable personal failings. Racked by survivor’s guilt, he’s shunned by the community and succumbs to a miserable few years in the Tokyo rubble before a high-risk gig aboard a civilian minesweeper provides an unexpected opportunity for redemption and, perhaps, revenge. At that point, it becomes just another monster movie. That first hour is brilliant, though. Exactly the kind of Godzilla movie I’ve been waiting for: a dense, powerful character study that concentrates on human pathos while casting the ten-story kaiju as an abstract, instigating force. The metaphorical obstacle that’s far too heavy for one man to challenge alone. Shikishima’s journey is about more than just floating mines, suicide missions and thunder lizards, but it can be enjoyed on those merits too. The loss of that duality is what makes the home stretch such a letdown. It’s not bad - I’ve always got time for giant lizards boxing dirty with warships, and the visual effects deliver as much with appropriate power - but man, it really seemed primed to become something completely different. I appreciate the daring Toho’s shown in toying with their formula over the past decade. Sooner or later, they seem bound to produce something revelatory. Godzilla Minus One comes awfully close.

I enjoy it. But i think it doesn't live to the hype. The first attack to Ginza was the peak of the whole movie, the rest is... kind of corny. VFX are weird, it can go from awesome to cringe and vice versa very quickly.

Godzilla Minus One is incredible! I was on the edge of my seat and tearing up the whole time. The story was very well done, the music and cinematography were awesome, the acting was top notch - Hollywood wishes they could make a film half this good. This will go down as one of the best kaiju movies ever made.

Ce Godzilla n’est pas un minus, non, non, mais plutôt un gigantesque enfoirnaze de sa mère (et de la mer) qui a une propension très nette à la violence et une indicible appétence pour tout bousiller ! il casse tout et si tu le contraries un tant soit peu, il te balance un rayon de la mort qui te démoule une explosion thermo-nucléaire ! Autant dire que c’est mal barré, surtout au lendemain de la guerre, alors que l’archipel nippon doit se reconstruire… mais avec quelques navires et beaucoup d’imagination, les opiniâtres Japonais vont se faire un devoir de botter le cul du gros méchant monstre ! Les effets spéciaux sont excellents et permettent d’apprécier à leur juste valeur quelques scènes de carnage impressionnantes, ainsi qu’une réalisation tout à fait maîtrisée et toujours claire. Les comédiens s’avèrent convaincants eux aussi même s’ils sont un peu trop souvent dans l’excès… il faut dire que la guimauve est ici de sortie et pas qu’un peu ! Le héros est en effet un ancien kamikaze (sans rire) et la guerre du Japon autocratique impérial est encore dans toutes les mémoires… le sens du devoir également, de même que l’horreur nucléaire bien entendu (c’est pas pour rien que le gros monstre crache des champignons atomiques !).Ce sont donc autant de plaies sur lesquelles il faut revenir et s’épancher… (un peu trop encore). Cela nuit bien sûr au rythme général du film même si l’on voit bien évidemment ce que représente le symbole ‘Godzilla’ : il faut bien expier tous vos péchés…! Néanmoins, on passe un fort bon moment (la musique est aussi excellente, soit dit en passant) et malgré ses maladresses, le film reste ici et là aussi drôle… qu’émouvant, finalement.

Godzilla never before felt this threatening. The movie has fantastic set of well if not amazingly played characters. The story is lovely and heartfelt. It pulls just the right strings to not only make you care, but also put you at the edge of your seat when it's necessary. Then there is a spectacle. What they pulled on this compared to hollywood negligible budget is some black magic. It looks amazing and sure there are couple shots when you can tell it's cgi but at other times it's jaw-dropping. I would never think that a Godzilla movie would amaze me and stay with me for some time. But Minus One did exactly that. Highly recommend.

Godzilla Minus One manages to be every bit of a poignant World War II drama as it is a giant monster movie, and like Shin Godzilla before it, manages to make the titular giant lizard truly scary again. This is on the short list of the greatest giant monster movies ever made, and could possibly top both Shin Godzilla and even the original 1954 Japanese feature as the best Godzilla film ever made.

I approached this movie with trepidation as someone who has long avoided Godzilla films, mainly because I remembered the ludicrous monster in 1980s Chewits adverts. To my surprise and delight, it completely exceeded my expectations. The special effects were undeniably impressive, bringing Godzilla to life in an awe-inspiring and terrifying way. Yet, what truly resonated with me was the unexpected depth of the human element. These films are not about the monster but about people, their struggles, and their resilience. This added layer of emotion transformed the film from a mere creature feature to a compelling human drama. Act Two’s scenes were a visual feast, with striking and evocative cinematography. The camera angles, reminiscent of Yasujiro Ozu, brought a sense of calm and stillness that contrasted beautifully with the impending monster’s attack. This artistic touch elevated the film, providing a unique and engaging viewing experience. Whilst there are nationalistic tendencies littered throughout the film, there is also evidence of regret and remorse. A wounded nation healing from not only Hiroshima and Nagasaki but also the leadership of Imperial Japan, which failed to recognise the value of human life. Overall, this Godzilla film was a revelation, blending stunning visual effects with a poignant human story. It has completely changed my perspective on the franchise, and I look forward to exploring more of these films. I highly recommend it!

Despite its relatively modest budget, Minus One succeeds in both making Godzilla a truly terrifying threat and creating compelling human drama.

This should be Japan’s Academy Award Contender This is probably the best Godzilla movie I’ve seen and it even rivals the original 1954 Godzilla as the best movie in the franchise, the story is second to none and the acting is just superb and majority of fans will be pleased to know that this movie mostly takes place in 1947 so it is going back to its WW2, Hiroshima and Nagasaki storyline but that is about all I can say without spoiling anything Personally its rivalling as my favourite Godzilla Film of all time, My favourite film of 2023 and my favourite Japanese film of all time and if Japan would submit any movie to win best international film at the Academy Awards next March it would have to be this, I’m sorry but this movie is nothing less then sensational it’s sad, it has agonizingly painful moments, it will make you cry and the most important thing that I don’t think many Godzilla films have been able to do correctly is that you want the protagonist surviveI can’t believe I’m saying this but Godzilla Minus One is Kaiju Cinema at it’s finest wait no… Godzilla Minus One is Cinema at it’s Finest So ladies and Gentlemen that’s it for me highly Recommended and if your thinking watching this film be warned that it is in Japanese with English Subtitles so the ultimate Decision is yours weather you want to see it but if you want to see a good foreign film or a awesome film in general in theatres now you just gotta make it Godzilla Minus One == REVIEWED ON DECEMEBER 4TH, 2023 ==

A gorgeously put together film in so many ways. Excellent acting, pacing, and CG action, and writing. It had me engaged throughout, and NOT just for whenever the big lizard showed up! Godzilla the monster was icing on the cake. It was also a drama featuring post-war narratives, the nature of family, cowardice, and redemption. If the monster was not included, this still would have been a great movie; but he was, so it's a terrific movie! And your draw will drop when you realize this quality of film was done on $15 million max and was two hours long! For comparison, a single 30 minute episode of Marvel's She Hulk cost $25 million a piece! Disney lost on that series big time, yet Godzilla is closing in on making back 10 times its budget at the time of this writing. Makes you wonder why Hollywood needs all that money for such mediocrity when excellence can apparently be had on the cheap.

I went into this movie thinking I was just going to be seeing some of the same things you see in all other kaiju movies. I was dead wrong. This movie takes a more sinister look at the people having to live through this ordeal **** monster attacking their homeland, while ALSO having to deal with the aftermath of WW2. I enjoyed this movie way more than I expected, and it definitely made my best of 2023 list.

The filmmakers took great pains to return to the primordial form of Godzilla; even the name suggests this. Recent renditions seem to show Godzilla as a benevolent guardian of smaller beings, but this movie shows it to be the nightmare it was originally conceived as. I can understand how this won the Oscar for visual effects. Every scene is a feast for the eyes. This Japanese production puts Hollywood to shame with its attention to detail and realism. The reproduction of reconstruction in post-war Japan is perfectly executed, delving into some of the raw wounds of the burning cities and trails of death left behind and the perceived devaluation of human life by Japanese imperial authorities, no different from modern so-called democratic empires. The acting could have been better from the leads, but the core story of three orphans struggling to form a family unit is quite touching. There is an undertone of sadness to it all, which shows how people have to heal themselves first before they can love others. But I need to end with a tribute to the power of Godzilla. The other recent movies only tried to accurately capture the atomic energy and indestructible nature of this megafauna. The instant destruction of a city depicted in the film was blood-curdling and awe-inspiring. The way Godzilla tosses ships around like toys is incredible—a visual masterpiece.

This is a decent entry in the Godzilla franchise and is novel because it takes place immediately after the end of WWII. There is much more human drama and internal conflict than actual scenes with Godzilla, but the latter do pay off. Recommended for true fans; others might find it overly sentimental.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is a bit puzzling, considering other films like "The Creator" seemed to showcase more innovative visuals. In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve never been a fan of Japanese monster movies, and, considering how many times the Godzilla story has been told so far, I’ve never been particularly interested in seeing any of them (after all, how many different variations can realistically be incorporated into the big guy’s single-minded mythos?). In any event, I relented in this case, because I was admittedly curious to see the film’s Oscar-winning visual effects, which, in all honesty, weren’t bad (though definitely not outstanding – how this picture bested the far-superior visuals of “The Creator” truly baffles me). However, capable special effects and production design considerations aside (the basis for the generous ratings I’ve given to this title), this release has little else to offer that hasn’t already been depicted countless times before. What’s more, the film’s attempts at trying to incorporate post-World War II political commentary and to be more than just a simplistic monster movie are fairly lame. Its non-devastation story threads are frequently predictable, heavy-handed, slowly paced, occasionally corny, often implausible, and, above all, boring. I frankly couldn’t wait for these segments to end and get back to the supposed “it” factor – the monster’s destructive hijinks (of which, to be perfectly honest, there were too few, given that this is supposed to be this offering’s primary drawing card). Even the title of this production needs work; any picture that requires a Google search to find out what it’s supposed to mean has inherent issues in my book. To its credit, writer-director Takashi Yamazaki’s effort to elevate the Godzilla narrative above the B movie camp fest level genuinely seems sincere, but the end product is little more than the standard item with better visuals and a well-intentioned (but largely failed) aim at infusing the story with more substantive content. In light of the many iterations of this saga that have been filmed over the years, I think it’s high time to give the persecuted sea monster a well-deserved rest for a while – a long while – and get on with the business of making movies that aren’t tiresome retreads and that at last give Tokyo a chance to rebuild.

I haven't got into a movie like this since Top Gun Maverick. The setups, twists and payoff's were great. Beautifully looking film, well acted. Interesting cultural insight on Japans take on the second world war. Considering the budget the special effects were mind blowing. How they done all this on 12 million budget is amazing. So getting the disc for this movie. A classic in the making for sure. The ending got me in the feels for sure. The film was sincere and earnest.

Forget all the awful Godzilla movies you may seen before. This is the real thing. Brilliantly done. This should be taught for upcoming movie makers.

An "OK" movie, watch once and that's it. The main story is fine but has some odd parts that are a little absurd and obvious. The animation on Godzilla is hard to **** way it moves seems like a guy in a badly designed disguise/suit.

This movie dragged on for WAY too long, and Godzilla was barely even in it. Way too much dialogue and exposition. The human story was interesting at first, but far too much time was spent on characters that I couldn't find myself caring about. I almost fell asleep at one point. And the kid constantly crying was just grating and annoying. I didn't go into this expecting to hate it either, in fact my expectations were totally overblown because of all the positive reviews the movie had. Plus let's be honest, if this movie didn't take place in Japan with actual Asian actors and full Japanese dialogue, it never would've gotten this much praise. People probably liked this movie more for its "authenticity" rather than the actual entertainment value. The parts with Godzilla that we did get were definitely good, but they were too few and far between. The sound and visuals were mostly good, but there were too many obvious throwbacks to the original films. I would probably re-watch the 1998 Godzilla with Matthew Broderick over this any day. I truly don't understand the unfathomably high ratings for this film.

I’m not quite understanding of the overwhelming praise for this movie. I understand the limited budget to what Legendary is making in the States but this movie was way too heavy handed with the guilt for the main character and the rigidity of Captain G on land was pathetic. To me, Shin was better in that it brought an entirely different idea of Godzilla to the tablE.

The action part comes late and is ok, but far away from USA standard. The story is a typical AAA action thing, forget it. So what is good? The movie takes place in Japan and in the history.
