Finding Steve McQueen is a combo platter of crazy-but-true history mixed with creative fiction. The result is an entertaining if sometimes overly self-conscious 1970s period piece, bursting with pop culture references.

The heist movie has a long pedigree, and while Finding Steve McQueen is no "Le Cercle Rouge" or "Rififi" (or even "Reservoir Dogs"), Johnson keeps the tone light, vivacious, almost slapstick at times. This is a smart choice.

(Mauro Lanari) The director opts for an unconventionally modest style, does not flaunt anything and chooses a non-linear diegetic structure not as a subterfuge to tangle a stupidity, but to face in each timeline a different thematic level, from love story to family affections, from politics up to the "memento mori" of the clock inside the skull. Sparkling cast: besides Whitaker, also the supporting actors like the Australian Rachael Taylor who is a Nicole Kidman with 20 years less. In short, one of those enchanting films that, in the pandemic idiocy of our time, have no more market, neither supply nor demand, since they are no longer understandable by anyone.

Come For The Soundtrack, Stay For The Movie, Sleep Through The Credits Finding Steve McQueen is a love story disguised as a bank robbery movie. This is a Baby Driver wannabe, without the great production, direction and dialogue. If you've never heard of Travis Fimmel before, well, this film won't leave a lasting impression of him with you either. Finding Steve McQueen has 24 Producers, so if the tempo or mood or anything else seems uneven-there you go. Everything starts out exciting as a bank heist film, but then it flips to a love story and by the 1 hour marks it's ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz. The soundtrack is fantastic, so this is the movie you play in the background while doing something else, like surfing the internet.

Johnson's latest effort, Finding Steve McQueen, isn't perfect. Or halfway perfect. Or even one-quarter perfect. But he does take what would have been a rather bland heist story and mix it with a mediocre love story to create an enjoyable final product.

Unfortunately, despite the fascinating story that provides its inspiration and a solid cast, the pic provides neither sufficient thrills nor humor to make it anything more than a minor diversion.

Finding Steve McQueen is a ramshackle indie heist drama that has a little bit (but not much) to do with Steve McQueen.

Though fact-based movies are often guilty of bending truth to improve a story, Finding Steve McQueen goes in the other direction, downplaying strange-but-true elements that might have helped its saggy narrative.

It’s a forgettable film, with a fair few gags that strike a depressingly sexist note.

I liked the movie since it was based on an actual event. I enjoyed the relationship between the brothers, and I thought Fichtner was really solid.

Inspired by the outrageous true story that's never been told.
