Facing a Bob Marley biopic is never easy. His figure is simply too large, too influential, too charged with meaning to fit comfortably into a conventional narrative. One Love takes a strange, almost timid approach, more concerned with not offending than with digging deep. That hesitation is noticeable from the very beginning, as the film moves forward cautiously, as if afraid to step on uncomfortable ground.What works best, by far, is the music. Every time the songs take over, the film breathes, rises, and reminds us why Marley mattered so much. That’s where the emotion and energy live, and where something close to truth finally appears. When the story shifts toward politics or historical context—especially regarding Jamaica—it becomes vaguer and more superficial, particularly for viewers unfamiliar with that background.Kingsley Ben-Adir delivers a solid performance in an extremely difficult role. He avoids imitation or caricature and conveys presence and calm. However, the script never gives him enough room to go further. Marley is portrayed as an almost untouchable symbol, which prevents the character from gaining contradictions, edges, or real **** spiritual dimension and Rastafarian beliefs are present but handled at arm’s length. They are mentioned and hinted at, rarely explored. The film seems eager to cover many aspects without fully committing to any of them, leaving the impression of a story that stays on the ****’s not a bad film, but it is a partial disappointment. It works better as a gentle introduction or a musical tribute than as a deep portrait of a complex historical figure. One Love is more enjoyable when listened to than when examined—and perhaps that is both its greatest strength and its main limitation.

The biopic fulfils its aim of recounting the key years of Bob Marley's life, which will please those who enjoy his songs. However, it feels like a half-hearted effort, as there is not enough connection to the characters.

This movie was so awful, and anyone that enjoyed it is not a real and true Bob Marley fan. This movie best serves as a movie that you don’t actually watch, and just have it playing in the background. If you actually care to learn about his life from birth to death, and you want to understand the significance of his career, then I strongly suggest and recommend that you watch a documentary called “Marley”, which came out in 2012. This is arguably the best place to go learn in depth about who Bob Marley was, and why he was incredibly special. My main issues and problems with this movie is that there was not a whole lot that was discussed. There were significant portions of his life that either were not talked about, or they were skimmed over quickly. This movie only talked about 1 single album, and even this was lacking.I saw this in theatres with no subtitles, and the accents were so thick that I almost never knew what was being said, or what was happening. I got lost and had no idea what was going on. Most of the time, the movie just felt like it was footage of the actor in a studio with Bob’s voice dubbed over. There was too much singing, and not enough content. I truly am so confused on what the point of this movie was. I am a huge Marley fan, and this movie made me feel confused, I did not learn anything new, and it felt embarrassing how little they covered on his life. I felt devastatingly disappointed on how botched this was. It felt more like a cash money grab. If you are genuinely curious about his life and are just starting to get into him or want to learn more, this abomination of a film is the worst place to start. Don’t waste your time or money.

[Let me preface this review by saying I know nothing about Bob Marley.I wanted to see this film for Kingsley Ben-Adir’s portrayal of this iconic figure.] Bob Marley: One Love is the story of the titular musician’s life between the “Smile Jamaica” and the “Bob Marley: One Love” concerts. It is a standard biopic and shows his rise to global fame and the relational challenges that come along with it. The film opening and closing with intertitles seems a safe way to frame the story... a montage (like we saw in Golda) would have been a stronger opening to set the tone for the film. Kingsley's portrayal of Marley is well-rounded and shows depth and understanding of the person. His Jamaican accent sounds hyper-authentic, but unfortunately to the point where it's incredibly tough to understand him. I missed half his lines. I would have appreciated more pronunciation from him, similar to the way Lynch delivered her lines. Kingsley brought a physicality to this role, in his appearance - no doubt thanks to the makeup & hairstyling department - shot out to them for the dreads!!! - which his features are perfect for, but also in his mannerisms and movement. This aspect of his acting made Bob Marley tangible and believable. Lashana Lynch brought power to this film. Bob Marley is the soul and of course the voice, but Rita felt like the heart. Her survival from the shooting showed resilience, and that set the tone for her character throughout the rest of the film. She has some of the most memorable lines from the film and delivers them with that same strength. There are a lot of missed opportunities to take creative risks with Marley’s flashbacks. With a lot of the missed dialogue, these scenes felt powerful - which was supported by the score - but lacked the meaning written into the script but missed in the line delivery. The film is titled after the concert by the same name… but I wanted to see more about Bob Marley’s life, he himself. Everyone knows he’s musically famous, and ignited the global reggae movement, but what about his younger life? There were flashbacks to his life as a teenager and his budding relationship with Rita, but those were cut short. I wanted more of that - how did he become who he is? Also, the weight of the gang violence in Jamaica was lost. It was mentioned and touched on in some short scenes, established so that is not missing from the context, but again: an opening montage to set the stage would have been more impactful. Good performances, great hairstyling - and the music of course is the driving factor throughout the whole film. Nothing crazy special, but definitely worth a watch.

I really like this movie because I didn’t know anything about Bob Marley‘s life until this movie came so I’m happy I got to know about what he did for Jamaica and the type of man that he was wasn’t perfect, but he was trying to bring peaceAnd that exactly what he did

It could be called an attempt at homage, but they aren't even trying, they just want to capitalize on Bob Marley by making the most boring and generic movie possible.

This is a movie about Bob Marley who is a Reggae legend. The music scores are great! I felt his love for Jamaica and music. It is fantastic to know that music can get people together over politics. It is impressive to watch the beautiful Jamaican scenes. In Europe and America, business is always a top priority. But people enjoy life in Jamaica.

In addition to telling an individual’s life story, one of the other primary objectives of a film biography is to provide insight into the protagonist’s character and nature. Unfortunately, that’s where this profile of reggae icon Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) tends to come up somewhat short. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biopic about the legendary musician and peace advocate provides viewers with a somewhat scattershot and episodic look at the artist’s life, primarily focused on the last few years of his life, intercut with flashbacks that are largely inserted without explanation and don’t come across as especially insightful or enlightening. To the film’s credit, it features a fine repertoire of Marley’s music, including the origins of many of his works, as well as fine performances by Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch as the musician’s wife, Rita. However, I came away from this offering feeling as though I didn’t know a lot more about its subject than I did going in, particularly since many story threads are raised but never sufficiently resolved. It also probably didn’t help that the film’s sound quality (in the non-musical sequences) left much to be desired, often resulting in the need to strain to hear and comprehend the dialogue. In many ways, “One Love” feels like a missed opportunity to tell the story of someone who had much to say but whose message doesn’t come across nearly as clearly as it could and should have. Listen to Marley’s music instead – you’ll get more out of one of his albums than you’re likely to absorb from this picture.

This point is the incipit of "Alchimie du verbe", when he writes "À moi": art and more generally culture as a self-analytical expression of one's own issues. In biopics on Hendrix, The Doors, Ian Curtis, Kurt Cobain, Oasis, etc.,* this emerges more or less obviously, while in Green's film (produced by produced by the protagonist's family and Pitt's PlanB) Marley's inner demons, "How can I bring peace? I can't even get peace for myself", are immediately exorcised by sharing his wife's response: "All that struggle. That's the source of your power." After all, one of the taglines chosen for the movie triumphantly states: "First he changed music. Then he changed the world". I just think that reality would not be different or even better with weed, dreadlocks and Rastafari. *From such list should be excluded bands that broke up for conflicts between members (The Beatles and The Police), musicians marginalized because of their diversity (Freddie Mercury and Elton John) and those afflicted by a difficult or traumatic childhood (Brian Wilson and precisely Bob Marley).

Maybe too narrow, overall, as the story is really lacking here. The performances are good but the film is below par even for this oversaturated genre.

The strong accent may require viewers to put their phones down and pay close attention to the **** film highlights key events in Bob Marley's life, such as Jamaica's independence from the UK and the subsequent internal civil war, which provides context for the themes in his music. Endorsed and produced by the Marley family, the biopic focuses on hope, love, unity, and the creation of his album *Exodus*. It also addresses some tougher subjects, including his health and death.

I don’t understand why they put the climax at the beginning, and spent the rest of the movie on what could have been a montage. Bob Marley’s life up until the Smile Jamaica concert is much more interesting than the few years after, however, this movie starts off with that concert and ends when he dies of cancer. That being said, the acting, photography, production, and everything else is top-notch. So many of the interesting parts of his life were either left out or glossed over, and too much attention was paid to his European tour, and the short time he spent in the UK.

I was really looking forward to learning more about the Bob Marley story, being swept along with the iconic music and spending a couple of hours or so lost in the moment. Sadly, whilst the acting is good, the movie is just (and I hate to say this) a bit dull and boring. So much more could and really should have been included on all levels. Pace, character engagement, musical set pieces: all should be there, none were. Ultimately the actors and the audience have been let down by poor decision making in direction and production. An opportunity missed.

Powerful moving movie! It shows the life of the Prophet Bob Marley and the work he did for the Most High God. It includes Haile Selassie, the Lion of Judah and descendant of King David. A man all the western world tried to hide from history! It's a must see and also mentions how christ is black and not a european blue eyed white man as the european has tried to usurp............. ****

The music is great,and the lead actor who plays Bob - and the actor playing his wife Rita - are uniformly fantastic. But there's nothing in terms of connective tissue. It's fairly inert. Also liked the clips of the real Bob at the end of the film.

IN A NUTSHELL: When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks worked together to create Saving Private Ryan, they made movie magic. It’s still my favorite WWII movie of all time. Their passion project grew to include the 10-part series Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and now Masters of the Air to honor those who fought in various theaters of World War II. The first part of this series was released during the end of January 2024 with the final and 9th installment to air March 15. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Kids will be bored unless they’re really into airplanes Brutal, bloody deaths Fist fighting Aerial fighting Alcohol & cigarettes A man sleeps with a married woman Married men have affairs We see a lot of people throw up. Ick. Some profanity, including a few F-bombs. A little bit of German is spoken with subtitles. We hear a little bit of French without subtitles. We see some shirtless men. Heartbreaking, devastating images Life in the German camps is illustrated THEMES: WWII Survival Courage Brotherhood Hope THINGS I LIKED: The cast is terrific and includes Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Barry Keoghan, Rafferty Law, Nate Mann, and many more. The special effects are pretty amazing, especially the bird’s-eye views from the airplanes. The series is based on some true events about the 100th Bomb Group. Replica B-17s were used in flight sequences by suspending the plans 50 feet in the air on a gimbal inside a 360-degree stage with LED panels. If viewers get bored during the first few episodes, the good news is that everything gets more interesting in episode 6. Keep watching! We see some of our favorite characters struggle and get creative while prisoners in the German POW camps. In episode 8, we learn about D-day in Normandy. My twin sister is a Nurse Practitioner and was selected to be one of the nurses that will be escorting WWII vets to Normandy for the 80th anniversary there! I’m so excited for her to have that experience! She and I visited Normandy last summer for the first time. It was amazing, devastating, and inspirational all at the same time. One of my husband’s ancestors was a paratrooper that survived his drop in Normandy. We also get to see the Tuskegee Airmen in episode 8. Nice touch. Episode 9 is grim as we see lots of dead bodies and the horrors of the Jewish Concentration Camps. I visited Dachau many years ago and it still haunts me. I hope younger generations that watch this will see what grit, resilience, duty, and honor looks like, and be inspired. I love that the film doesn’t end with just the last big battle, but it shows the mercy missions some of the pilots went on after the war to drop food and supplies all over Europe. We even get to see the famous Dutch flower fields with the words “Many thanks” spelled out in the fields so the pilots could see their gratitude as they made the supply drops. So sweet. After the last scene, we get to see pictures of the real men the movie is about and learn what they did with the rest of the lives. So touching. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: I only see Elvis Presley when I see actor Austin Butler. He is constantly talking, acting, and posing like The King. He also always has his coat collar flipped up like Elvis did. It took a long time for me to become engaged with the various characters. We just don’t get to learn that much about them. Sadly, the inevitable result is we just don’t care that much about them, or who lives or dies. Buck? Bucky? Which one was which? I didn’t truly feel invested until about episode 6. The first five episodes repeated the same elements of the prior: pilots learn their mission, some live while some die, they party during their breaks. The good news is that everything changes and picks up the intrigue after that. The last 3 episodes are the best and worth the wait. Sometimes, it’s hard to understand what the pilots are saying when they’re wearing their masks in the plane. A lot of scenes were shot with CGI. Too many. Too much. I wanted to better understand the various elements of the war, such as locations and campaigns. Of course, everyone is comparing this limited series to Band of Brothers. That’s a really hard act to follow. I mean, even the theme song for that one made me cry every time I heard it. While this is decent, it’s not great and feels a little hollow in comparison. I wanted to be swept away. I wanted to feel the pain and cry. I just didn’t. I heard someone refer to this as “Bland of Brothers.” They’re not wrong. It’s embarrassing how we, Americans, love to act like we’re the heroes of the universe. I didn’t understand why the film showed so much disrespect for the RAF. The title of the series is revealed in the very last episode.

I'm not sure why this is getting so many negative reviews. My experience with the movie was great. The storytelling was accurate and Kingsley Ben Adir's portrayal of Bob was spot on.

I'm a life-long Marley fan, and loved this film for the music. However, the story felt disjointed, the dialogue is sometimes difficult to follow (captions would help), it doesn't tell much at all about the beginnings of Marley's life, and there were a few too many themes/tropes that I've seen in a dozen other 'musician-biography' films.

O filme conta os últimos anos de vida de Bob Marley, em meio a shows, turnês, composições, conflitos e tudo que tem na vida de um artista musical em ascensão. Algumas vezes o filme mostra rápidos trechos da infância e adolescência que só enriquecem mais a história. É bem exposto o quanto ele era uma pessoa boa mas tbm citam seus defeitos e momentos de fraqueza humana. Acima de tudo um artista que tinha uma mensagem e virou uma mensagem: one love.

• PROs: Good performances from all the leads and supporting actors. Charismatic lead performance. Good music, of course. Nice to see Grantchester's James Norton in a small supporting role. • CONs: Clunky dialogue. Sometimes difficult to understand the dialects (and as a former transcriptionist, I don't usually have much trouble with that sort of thing). Storyline seemed a bit disjointed and patched together. Kept checking my watch, not a good sign. • THE UPSHOT: Disappointing overall, although Marley fans will still find something to enjoy.

This film about the famous reggae singer/songwriter stars Kingsley Ben-Adir. It's not a straightforward biopic, because it's mostly set after his fame has been established. The story starts in Jamaica during a tumultuous civil war that was rife with violence and it explores his efforts to bring peace to his homeland. A few flashbacks to his formative years add a more biographical slant. There's also plenty of his music, in the soundtrack, in concerts and in the studio. Ben-Adir captures Marley's joy and charisma, while Lashana Lynch provides strong support as his wife. The Jamaican patois is sometimes so thick it's hard to understand, but they've made sure the dialogue is clear in pivotal exchanges. While the film is rich with Marley's music and a joyful performance by Ben-Adir, the dramatic conflicts seldom add much depth to the characterization. It's more a celebration of the man and his music.

Kinsgley Ben-Adir embodies what Bob Marley represents, but the rest of the film is boring or plain bad. A by-the-numbers biopic with everything you expect from it, including the "rising to the top" montage with a clip of how the hit single reaches number #1. Not the worst example in the genre, but still very unfocused and bland.

It felt kind of slow in spots but the acting was actually great, and even though I couldn't understand their Jamaican language at times I kind of get the point, and it's actually a decent tribute to a legendary singer that is known around the world.

The film is a pleasure to watch, and the soundtrack is a delight (no one doubted it). However, I find that the film doesn't go deep enough and doesn't tell enough of Bob Marley's great life.

Watched Bob Marley One Love this weekend and can say it’s definitely a good film/biopic. Kingsley Ben-Adir did a good-job representing Bob, and did an impressively accurate Jamaican accent for a British actor. They choose a good time period to base the film around (1976-1978) during the period Bob made “Exodus”, which in my opinion was a great album to chose for the movie. Would definitely recommend!

I do not understand low scores for this superb film on Bob Marley. It was a blast. It was emotional. And the ending credits had me stifling tears. I wasn’t only one in theater trying to keep it together either.

Movie was amazing and gave a great insight into the early days and trials of Bob's life and mission as a musician wanting to leave an impact that could change the world and the collective creative input by his family to create this film is absolutely beautiful. It brought me to tears and made me so proud to see the many names included in compiling this for the honor of someone who left a mark on the world that still shakes it to this day. Bob left a legacy of ONE LOVE that still moves generations and this movie is iconic. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes biopic movies about revolutionary and impactful people and are a fan of Marley music.

Critics, stop giving people more reason to disregard your opinions. The smear campaign going on here is ridiculous. This movie was far from perfect, but to discard it like trash is wrong. Critics said “It reveals little about Marley” maybe because he was one of the most famous & influential artists of the 20th century. This is a movie everyone should watch whether you listen to his music or not.

A must watch for advocates of equality and global compassion. Kingsley gets an Academy Award for this in a just world.

Embora Kingsley Ben-Adir esteja bem à vontade no papel, com trejeitos que lembram bastante o astro do reggae, o roteiro de "Bob Marley: One Love" pode até ser conciso, mas ainda assim não deixou de ser episódico. Veja-se, por exemplo, o atentado. Lá pelas tantas, é completamente esquecível, não mais marcante. E assim o filme vai, explorando muito pouco do ícone. Bob Marley, nascido Robert Nesta Marley em 6 de fevereiro de 1945, foi um icônico músico jamaicano, compositor e líder do movimento reggae. Ele é amplamente considerado um dos maiores artistas musicais de todos os tempos e um ícone cultural global. Gosto de como o filme o torna global e local ao mesmo tempo (por mais que muito me incomode o uso do filtro laranjado para representar tudo que está a baixo geograficamente dos EUA). Marley nasceu em Nine Mile, uma pequena vila na paróquia de Saint Ann, Jamaica. Not fully detailled as any Marley's fan would love, but felt the spirit of Bob in this movie, and the sound, obviously, is fantastic !

This film is a respectful, soulful, emotional, and inspirational tribute to Bob Marley. I am livid at the smear campaign and review bombing against this fine film . Kingsley-Ben Adir is sensational and perfectly captured his mannerisms, charisma, and essence . Lashana Lynch was also great at playing strong Rita. Rita Marley and Ziggy Marley were producers on this film . I think they understood Bob Marley better than biased journalists with an agenda. The film wanted to pay tribute to Marley’s music, legacy, and message of harmony & peace. It definitely accomplishes that . Some of the criticisms show such a double standard . Oppenheimer focused on two singular events like this film , but critics lavished praise on that film while using that angle to deride Bob Marley: One Love. I think this film is a good introduction to the iconic Bob Marley; most people don’t know his general backstory. This is a fine film
