It is a fine, if lightweight, little slice of throwback-’80s teen movie tropes with some high-tech flair.

What's missing is any genuine personality from the robot (or the human characters, for that matter).

Perhaps with a more adventurous creature design – or stakes that rose above the film’s mild ‘PG’ rating – A.X.L might have referenced better films while still finding its own voice.

Sadly, Oliver Daly's kid-oriented feature only strains hopelessly for Amblin Entertainment-style magic. The result is that A.X.L. feels in desperate need of repairs.

A-X-L may be a dog, but he’s designed to be a weapon, so he looks like nightmare fuel. And nightmare fuel usually isn’t the best centerpiece for a family-friendly flick.

It has no laughs, no thrills and little that would distract, much less entertain a child.

Great for kids over 9, teens, adults. Well-made family film with good values about kindness, compassion and the value of life over promotion of violence. Good suspense and exciting scenes. Unbelievable motocross action--teens will love it. Stunt riders were incredible. CGI was excellent. Acting was good, particularly the lead boy and his father. Realistic portrayal of war technology race and dehumanizing aspects. Sound quality poor. Female lead trashy clothes poor choice. Hope they make this into a series on Netflix.

Great characters and overall great story. This movie was underrated. It's trailer did not do it justice. The sound track is also killer.
