Deck13 has stepped up to take a lash at Souls’ patented sadism. Some swings are short of the target, but the bulk have landed where they should. [July 2017, p80]

When it came to rating the game, I was torn between 7+ and 8. There are some technical issues here, the bosses are disappointingly bland and both enemies and environments could use some more variety. I made my final decision when I played the wonderful song from the game and started to look through the screenshots I captured. I instantly remembered how much fun I had with The Surge’s great combat system and felt the need to start New Game+. And I don’t even consider Dark Souls the best thing since medieval torture devices. [07/2017, p.54]

Lacks the finesse and charisma of its inspiration, and the exhilaration of nippier titles such as Bloodborne. A decent action RPG that finds itself in with a tough crowd. [July 2016, p.83]

I know, I know, giving this game a 10 might seem exaggerated but... NO! A 10 it is fully deserved! Even though a 9 or even an 8.5 would more fit, keeping in mind that I have experienced a lot of weird technical issues on my PlayStation 4 and then again -when I have replayed it on my PlayStation5 Pro; I HAVE TO award it a 10, simply because i had a lot of fun playing this game, loved the story, the combat, the characters, the atmosphere and also because this game is the second game I have ever earned the platinum trophy for... And, also, I have to award it a 10, just so that it counters some of the low grades -undeserved imo- some users have given it for some unknown "reason".I whole heartedly recommend it... even at full price. Just, keep in mind, that if you are buying it for a console (I don't know if it has problems on Xbox, I own it on PS) you will -surely- experience crashes, and some issues with the sound. But, even with more than a couple dozens of hard crashes in over 500 hours of gameplay, I repeat... This game is going to be worth your while!

Matching recycled ideas with ingenious new ones has bred a challenger to one of gaming's greats. [July 2017, p.74]

While it might seem like a sci-fi soulslike, The Surge proved itself to be more than just another wannabe thanks to the outstanding twists on combat, satisfying choices in playstyle, and allowing for fearless engagement in its systems thanks to the ability to respec at any time. While I often felt wrecked and ruined by my journey through the hostile, unforgiving mega-corp, by the end I came around and instantly started a new playthrough. Deck 13 has taken the criticisms leveled at them after Lords of the Fallen, and not only responded to them, but actually used that feedback to improve in major ways. Great job.

Although imperfect, The Surge is a very enjoyable game for those who like a challenge. It's better than Lords of the Fallen, and its setting makes it feel more unique.

The Surge is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable action RPG. While it can be incredibly frustrating at times, the fantastic combat and body part targeting system does enough to overshadow the bad parts.

While the difficulty may seem like a bad thing to have, it is as much a reason not to play these types of games as it is a reason to play these games. If you seek a challenge with a simple story, rather fun combos and some tough bosses, The Surge should be your next stop! Maybe wait for a price drop, though.

The Surge had potential, but its excellent combat systems are baked into a game that can’t do them justice. The repetitive and drab environments are a huge hindrance, and when combined with a confusing network of corridors, hallways, and ledges, it’s easy to become frustrated, misled, and lost. You may find some fun experimenting with your attack options and the smooth framerate on the PS4 Pro does help to make that a better experience, but expecting anything more than that will only set yourself up for disappointment.

A great first entry into the soulsborne formula. not bad but not great either but if you've played other soulsborne before you can try this as well.

If you are not into Souls-like games, this is not for you. While the first area is a fun challenge, the difficulty spike in the second area is borderline unplayable to all but the hardest of Souls-like fans. Which is a shame as I was really enjoying myself in the opening act But that's where it ended.
