The Last Hero of Nostalgaia
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia aspired to create a compelling satire on unending cycle of nostalgia, but during its development the devs got somehow tangled in the restraining string of its own narrator. This somehow unique love letter to Dark Souls is not only sprinkled with various nostalgic gags from pop culture, but filled with endless references, humor, and lack of original ideas… Bugs, glitches and more than a decade of idealization created this soulslike mess which has its moments, but somehow misses the very point it’s trying to make.
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia gives us comedy in an otherwise infuriating (fun, but still infuriating) Souls-like experience. This comedy sets it apart; it cuts through the endless dying to give new layers to the rich story. Who knows… maybe there’s hope for this stick figure yet.
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia pays homage to soulslike genre while telling a funny story with a lot of good irony. Nonetheless, the overall quality is too low for a demanding genre wit too many good games.

This game could have, and should have, been so much better. The game is charming, funny and does what it sets out to do. However, the game runs poorly, combat (and camera) is stiff and unresponsive, making it more difficult than it needs to be, enemies can be a little unfair, especially with the stiff controls and backtracking is a giant pain in this game. Overall, it isn’t a bad buy if it is on sale, but the game really isn’t worth full price. I would love to see a remake of this game with a bigger budget. I think it could be really good.

Review after 41 hours: probably the most obvious homage to Dark Souls there is. Game almost plays like a Dark Souls 0.5. Decent fun to be had if you like a moderate challenge, not too many boss fights & lots of exploring. Some levels are quite confusing to navigate due to many areas being indistinguishable from each other (especially in the DLC). Things that will get you killed: the janky lock-on when there are a few enemies on-screen and the slow healing speed (like Dark Souls 2). The (weak) humour doesn't get in the way of gameplay, thankfully. Overall, definitely worth a buy (on sale) for the Souls-like fans

These days it seems anything that feels different is great to play. I love all the references, humour and goofiness and yet this game plays like a decent souls like. So many recent games are virtual carbon copies of other games and are only recycling old stale ideas. This one may be a love letter to souls games but it still feels fresh and fun at the same time. I appreciate the retro touches as well (being a gamer for almost 43 years) The size of the download is also impressive to say the least for the content here,

It’s not everyday you see a refreshing approach on the Souls-like genre, especially one that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia does just that, putting you into the pixelated boots of a bundle of sticks on a mission to restore the entire world of video games. Developer Over The Moon does a fantastic job wrapping what we all know and love about Dark Souls with a layer of satirical flare and video game history. If you can get past some frustrating design choices and janky keyboard controls, then you’re in for a nostalgic treat.

Once you get out of the starting area and remove "freeze time when attacked" in option. This game is really fun. took me ~18hours to complete. 18 hours well spent.

All in a great take on the Soulslike staples we've already seen flood the market. This jaunt through a retro dullscape might feel oddly uninspiring if it wasn't for the streamlined gameplay and acerbic wit wielded by Nostalgaia.

At the end of the day, the story is the one thing - the only thing - that differentiates The Last Hero of Nostalgaia from the rest of the pack. Everything else lacks any innovation. The names of certain elements (memory, beacons, etc.) may have been changed to match the theme of the storyline, and although character creation, progression, and combat are all done very well, they are all extremely by the book Souls-like.

Refreshing if sadly not as fleshed out as one would wish, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia does still provide enough of a charm and a challenge alike for Souls veterans looking for a new take on the formula.

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is the Dark-Soulest of all Soulslikes. The idea of using lore as a game mechanic is interesting, but in the end maybe too easily applied on the experience. Overall Nostalgaia is a Dark Souls child with no regrets about it, but with some over-simplification and some battle-related issues.
