Arkham Asylum is a game with the power to utterly captivate you and can stand proudly alongside modern classics such as "Resident Evil 4", "Gears of War," and "BioShock"...Simply put, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a masterpiece. [Sept 2009, p.66]
Batman: Arkham Asylum is this year's "BioShock," not just from the connection established with the world, but from its ability to innovate where new ideas are needed, and moreover, deliver an adventure unlike any other. [Sept 2009, p.82]

A massively impressive licensed game. Without a license holding it all together Arkham Asylum would have been a stunning game with striking features. That it's all wrapped up in Batman's world makes the experience so much more appealing, and it works both as an extension of lore for Batman enthusiasts and an entry point for those less familiar with the DC universe. Some time ago I watched a review of this game that caught my attention, and it made me want to replay it—partly because Batman is my favorite superhero and I love his world. The game is essentially a horror-themed metroidvania set in a psychiatric asylum starring Batman. It truly captures the essence of the comics, perfectly conveying the dark and eerie atmosphere of Gotham and Arkham. The villains are outstanding, and I’d even say they are among the most faithful portrayals from the comics. On the downside, the game has aged a bit poorly. Some mechanics feel a little weak, the combat lacks dynamism, and the exploration and collectibles could have been better. The final boss fight is also quite disappointing.

Great game, the combat isn't as smooth as the games to come after it but it still has a great atmosphere and gameplay loop that will keep you hooked.

Rocksteady have proven that they’re a company that really care. They actually ‘get’ Batman, they’ve looked at the character from every conceivable angle and strived to make this everything anybody could possibly want from a Batman game.

There is not a single-element of the Batman that this game doesn't nail, from the gadgets to the atmosphere and the combat. The action is thrilling and varied, and even the fetch quests are compelling.

The ultimate Batman experience. Still holds up years after it released and birthed one of the best combat systems in gaming. A solidified and bona fide masterpiece.

Overall, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a fantastic, exceptional, and an extravagant video game, and revitalizes both the comic-book and Batman video game based genres.

Between the Story Mode, Challenge Rooms and myriad hidden items (that are more compelling than in most games), there’s a lot of entertainment in Arkham Asylum.

Game Over Online
While it’s slightly hurt by a few minor problems, Batman: Arkham Asylum rises above them to provide an unforgettable experience. Part of it is due to the well-crafted storyline, but it’s also due to the well-made gameplay that makes most things easy to do and certainly more than any Batman game released in the last 15 years.

The result is so good that we're declaring it an easy 'Best of' contender for 2009.

Batman: Arkham Asylum doesn't quite deliver on all of its big ideas, and thus dodges the highest of accolades, but its rousing peaks make its low points more than bearable. Its best moments of dazzling showmanship easily qualify as must-see entertainment, even if they're not sufficient to make the game as a whole a must-play.

A remarkable game from 2009 that is perfect for its time in my book. Fantastic from start to finish in every way. The groundbreaking gameplay, great story, music, perfect voicecast for awesome characters and brooding excitement is amazing!

The best atmosphere in the saga and very influential in combat (The Free Flow). The only bad thing is the story (Compared to others games of Arkham) and the boss fights, especially the last one...
