Ubisoft has plunged the huge potential and brought an expansion nobody will remember after the Olympic Games end. The game is full of imperfections revealing that Ubisoft has bet primarily on the license attraction. Probably the best the game can offer are the new modes of downhill skiing and slalom, or Slopestyle, yet it is obvious, that the expansion could be significantly better.
The title therefore needs to be thoroughly rethought.
Steep: Road to the Olympics is a separate expansion, meaning it's not included as part of the season pass. That's a shame because, if it was, it would be easier to recommend. For a game all about freedom of choice and spontaneous activity, with quite an arcade-centric physics engine, it was clearly going to struggle to convey the technical side of the Winter Olympic Games. The 'Be a Legend' story-mode seems rushed and ill-devised. The footage of athletes is poorly integrated and the narrating and tutoring is all too intense, especially when the experience is so fragmented and dull. Japan, on the other hand, is a beautiful and large region, which really does expand the Steep world with a new aesthetic, new event types, and new challenges. Hence, Steep fans who persevere with the first segment, will eventually receive an impressive content injection. Fans of the Winter Olympics, however, will probably find this one quite underwhelming.

Overall I found this game to be inaccessible, dull and frustrating. I'm not sure if they went too far in the simulation aspect, but I prefer the older SSX games that emphasised fun, something this game sorely lacking. Learning to play it was confusing, and the layout of the events and maps are even more confusing. There are also tons of microtransactions in there too, so I'll be trading this game back in again in the hope that a better snowboarding game comes along in future.

I really liked this DLC. There was a ton of new events to do and the competition of the olympic events is truly a blast. Also, the story mode is a 10/10, most sports games struggle to create any type of immersive dialogue in a career/story mode and the "road to the olympics" really made me feel like i NEEDED to finish in 1st place for my countries pride (or whatever, lol). The only reason this isn't a 10/10 for me is because the Olympic side of the mountain isn't available for free travel and that blows, but other then that, I love it! good job ubisoft. Maybe consider a CO/UT package!!

Road to Olympics is a sincere, passionate and compelling love letter to the Olympic spirt. It’s not a proper game about Pyeongchang Winter Games but rather a Steep-style take on them, with a fresh and intense game campaign, an amazing new mountain to explore and a lot of challenges to take. If you loved Steep, you’ll love this expansion even more.

Road to the Olympics adds a stand alone story that follows an olympic snowboarders’ journey from a hopeful participant, to the first person to ever claim gold in three distinctly different snowboarding events: Half-Pipe, Big Air, and Slopestyle. It (mercifully) doesn’t beat you over the head with an in-depth storyline and instead opts for a documentary approach of sorts.

The orginal was a good game even if it had quite some flaws: yet it was still the best (and only) game you could play if you wanted to experience virtual skiing and snowboarding (be it freestyle, freeride, competitive alpine skiing, boardercross, etc.). But the expansion makes it all better: finally good rail physics, a lot of rails and crazy snow parks in the beautiful new open world area (Japan), finally a good "career" mode (road to the Olympics) and surprisingly good classic alpine skiing events (super-G, downhill, slalom, etc.). This makes it by far the best winter sports game since ages.

Steep: Road to the Olympics does not quite represent the magnitude of an Olympic event like the Pyeongchang Winter Games 2018, but still includes some pretty fun additions to the Steep formula.

Even with the structure of the Olympic events being lacking, there’s still more than enough content here to justify the asking price.

Road to the Olympics is an expansion that tries to make a different cut compared to the original game: more linear, more simulative and more challenging. Conditions that probably will not be particularly interesting for historical players of the title that can still face new mountains and new challenges in total autonomy and carefree. For those who was waiting for a more structured experience and perhaps tied to something more concrete like the Olympics, with this expansion that comes also packaged in a bundle with the base game, it is definitely a good reason to get on board the multi-sports title Ubisoft to explore the Alps and Alaska once in South Korea.

This content neither plays to Steep's existing strengths nor gives gamers looking for Olympic competition anything satisfying.
