A somewhat simplified version of earlier games of the series. There are some fun mini games and unlockables, but overall there's distinct a lack of content. And where is is the challenge?
Mario Tennis Open feels a bit lifeless at first, simply because it doesn't give any other incentive for playing than to keep unlocking things and to just play more tennis.

This is kind of a laughingstock to be honest. It has no cool mechanics and is boring to not have the different game modes of the previous games

Tennis has always been a sport I actually feel like I could take part of, and it's easily video games at their most basic. Hit the ball back and forth, try to flak your opponent, or just simply hit the ball really really hard to score points. Matches can often go from simply being a few minutes long to nearly an hour. However Mario always has to have a spin on sports games to make them more interesting, and largely this is done by different modes and various super hits that help mix the basic tennis structure into something more. While I don't think that the base game of Mario Tennis Open will really win over anyone, it is still tennis with a few neat generic super moves to use. The fact this game feels devoid of originality or Mario charm when it comes to hitting the ball or playing on different courts is a bit of a misstep in my eyes tho. While there is a course or two that have different properties compared to the rest of the standard game, this feel more akin to not having enough time to develop more interesting features over actually intentional use of the court for the final cup as a harder version of the tournaments **** fact, a lot of the features and single player stuff just seem like they were cut from what they were suppose to be, and instead of a neat little tennis RPG like we did with the GBA Mario Tennis, we instead get a customization Mii set with little use outside of streetpass novelty. On top of that, there is also the possibility of making characters a star version of themselves, and while it is a bit neat at first to get a "better" version of your character, it's really just a way to pad the game even more.Despite everything, Open does have a few neat little features, including 4 different mini games that let the player practice their shooting to become better players and unlock additional characters. I get that it **** to hide characters under conditions in multiplayer games, mostly because you want to open the game and play it right away, but in Open's defense these modes really help you focus on your aim and consistency to hit shoots all over the court. While I can't say how much skill I gained from these mini-games, I can't absolutely say I felt like I got better as a player and had fun doing it. The fact that they separate practices into 4 unique and defined mini-games is also really charming, being able to either play Tennis with the classic Super Mario Game, hit back the ball through rings, hit the ball while your view is blocked by ink, and controlling where your ball goes so it doesn't get **** into a black hole. Each mini-game is designed to help you get better, and is by far the best part of Mario Tennis Open.Sadly though, I just don't see Mario Tennis Open as a good Mario Sports game, but it is a decently good game. Open suffers from consistent faults like many of the other tennis titles, but fundamental lacks any charm in it's base game to really cover them up. In terms of handheld Mario Sports games, this is low on the list.

Entertaining tennis action that proves both challenging and fun. Best played with friends. [July 2012, p.76]

For the first time in series history, Mario Tennis Open offers full online multiplayer – both singles and (impressively) doubles. It also has local wireless multiplayer. Based on my experience, both modes work smoothly. This isn't the tennis revolution that some might have hoped for, but it's a solid new feature in a franchise that's built its popularity on slow, incremental improvement.

The music was too cutesy and grating for my liking (a complaint I have with many Nintendo sports games), and I would have liked the option to be able to turn it off, but keep the sound effects of the match. Still, I would rate it as a good go-to game to pick up for short periods, like the bus ride to work. Just make sure your headphones are firmly plugged in first.

For better and for worse, Mario Tennis Open is clearly meant to be a very accessible console-style experience on a handheld. [May 2012, p.84]

There will rightfully be criticism for the slender single-player modes here, but the true worth of Mario Tennis Open is in multiplayer, both as the game's biggest strength and a quiet indicator of Nintendo's online handheld revolution.

Mario Tennis Open is a more pure tennis experience than it's predecessors, giving you a sense of control on the court. Unfortunately the game is still plagued with elements that leave you at the mercy of chance all too often.

I really really don't understand why this game has a such low score. The game is perfectly fine, what else did you expect from a game based on Tennis ? Such a game has a lot of boundaries. The NGC version was less fun with the super attacks u were able to use. It now comes all together to some good old tennis (like the N64 version) !! One DOWN side, but not enough to take one point out, is the incredibly bad way of connecting with friends over the internet. The rest is fine and easy to use !!!! Thanks Nintendo (and Camelot) !!

If anything, Mario Tennis Open should be more majestic and fun than it already is. Instead, we just only get limited of that. The fun will just only come in the first 30 minutes. Same with the majestic.

Nice graphic, gameplay and sound. But the character roster is a bad joke. First Rosalina got replaced by a luma, and that's pretty ridiculous. Second, the terrible 'DLC'. These 'extra characters' are just re-textured characters like Metal Mario and tons of Yoshi recolors. There are also some problems with online multiplayer and so on. Okay for Mario/Tennis fans but a bad choice for players that search games with a GOOD character roster.
