Alan Wake II7
Jan 18, 2025
The graphical fidelity and acting are of the highest standard. The atmosphere and Twilight Zone / X-files themes are cool. It kept my attention for 70 hours, so it's a good game worth playing. What stops it from being a *great* game is a story that is too convoluted and combat that is too clunky.

Control: Ultimate Edition8
Jan 18, 2025
This was cool and fun. Smooth combat, an engaging environment, a unique atmosphere, excellent sound design, and great acting/voice acting. The story is bonkers, though, just as it is in all the Alan Wake-themed games. There are a few inconvenient difficulty spikes that feel unfair at the time, but persistence and a combat guide will get you through.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare7
Jan 18, 2025
It's a notable improvement over the original Alan Wake, featuring smoother controls. The game is somewhat shorter and easier, but that's not necessarily negative; it prevented frustrating combat and ensured it didn't outstay its welcome.

Alan Wake7
Jan 18, 2025
Considering its age, the original Alan Wake and its two DLC (The Signal and The Writer) remain interesting. Clunky controls, mediocre combat, and repetition detract from the experience. However, the Twilight Zone and X-Files theme make it unique.

Horizon Zero Dawn5
Apr 28, 2024
It's a visually captivating open world with an engaging sci-fi backstory. In the early game, I enjoyed the feeling of freedom and vulnerability with the need to be cautious. I feel sorry for the tech team, as the game is let down by bad writing. The game induces an eye-rolling cringe as soon as anyone starts talking. The dialogue and character portrayal make Aloy feel like an aw-shucks, honest-to-goodness Disney Princess (TM) despite all her throat-slitting and headshots. It's not a competitor to Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2.

Detroit: Become Human8

Detroit is definitely worth experiencing. It has an engaging story with great performances by the cast. The game is the successful evolution of the game mechanics from Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls.

DOOM8
May 19, 2023
I've played this on PC and PS4. For the PC version, I rated a perfect 10 because the keyboard and mouse are an extension of my mind. Console FPS is just more challenging. Movement is slower; aim assist is necessary. It's still a fantastic game.

Beyond: Two Souls4
May 19, 2023
The acting and music are great for obvious reasons (Page, Dafoe, Zimmer). The graphics are fine. The story is adequate. But the whole experience is wrecked by awful control mechanics. Beyond: Two Souls was released two years after Uncharted 3 and Witcher 2, both third-person perspectives with good movement and camera control; how did this pass playtesting?

Heavy Rain4

Mark Twain, once **** walk spoiled. The same can be said for Heavy Rain. An OK story turned into a slow stumble of quick-time events. Also features unimpressive voice acting and a non-intuitive set of controls.

Far Cry 29
May 13, 2023
It's a 9 for innovation, vision, music, and just the feel of it. It's a lot like a flight sim in that you spend a lot of time preparing and making your way to the target undetected and then trying to make a clean getaway and survive the long journey home. Malaria is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be; it fits thematically and feels right. Never clearing outposts means the world stays populated and stays dangerous. I was hit with a game-breaking bug after 70 hours. I can't say I wasn't warned, though, and I took the risk willingly. Still, I loved our time together, and maybe one day I'll try it again. A 2024 remake? That would be cool - Far Cry Noir - Africa.

Mick Gordon, thank you for an amazing soundtrack. Doom 2016 was the last game to honour the intention of the original. Run around and kill monsters, and try not to think too much. This game is the perfect expression of the design intention. Fast, balanced, artistic. The best way to unwind after a day at the office.

The Last of Us Part II9
Feb 25, 2023
The Last of Us Part 2 is technically brilliant. Its is clearly not intended to be "fun". This is not Uncharted. Were not in Kansas anymore. I think this game is meant to make you think and feel, and those thoughts and feelings will not be happy thoughts and feelings. This game will not make you laugh and cry. There is no rollercoaster of emotions. It is a plummeting elevator with broken lights; it goes straight down and gets darker. It will make you feel shocked, sad, and by the end, utterly empty. The Last of Us Part 2 is an epic Shakespearean Tragedy, a cautionary tale. Rather than an exercise in mindless violence, it is a uniquely painful implementation of mindful violence. Neil Druckman did something powerful and commendable—a truly unique expression of Art.

This is a beautiful art, with outstanding graphic design and world design. And like Kentucky Route Zero, let down by an incomprehensible narrative. This game raises so my 'why' questions it does not explain in a way that gives any sense of enjoyment or closure.

9/10 for the Art. 3/10 for the enjoyment. If you've ever been to a gallery of modern art and seen an installation of a teaspoon stuck in concrete entitled "green sunset", and understood it, or felt something more than "WTF???" then you'll love this experience. Me, I don't get modern art. I can see what it is, and appreciate one aspect. I made it all the way through. I didn't get it.

RIDE 30
Aug 5, 2021
Coming right off playing and loving GT Sport, I was looking forward to RIDE 3. The work by RIDE 3's 3D modelers and the graphic designers is fantastic. It truly looks amazing. But the game is completely let down by whoever decided to approve the physics and controls. It is awful. Frustrating. Unlike GT Sport where the game gave you range to be OK or awesome and explained how to drive, RIDE 4 is non-communicative and unforgiving. After 4 hours of unintuitive, unexplained introduction I gave up. I made it through the license test and left it at that. There will be no DLC purchases, no RIDE 4 purchases, a proper financial consequence for whoever decided to make a game that should be fun, into a totally not-fun experience. Or maybe this is a niche game for people who like Dark Souls-hard or Cuphead-hard games? Yeah, that's not me.
