As with any thoughtful storytelling, Soma works on multiple levels.

One of the best games I've played this year and my favorite from Frictional to date.

SOMA is one of the few games that managed to surpass it's high expectations. Frictional Game's magnum opus is dramatic, emotional, contemplative, and uniquely depressing. Rarely has a game gripped me from start to finish, and left me wanting for more.

You know that sensation when you finish a game and you're, like, "Damn". Well, that's what happened to me when I finished this masterpiece.

It may not stir the hordes of wailing YouTubers looking for the next best haunted house, but SOMA succeeds at crafting something much more meaningful in a genre that’s deserving of more than just simple jump scares.

Soma’s impressively realized underwater ordeal challenges even the coldest robot-slayers to consider a world where making such snap moral decisions is anything but automatic.

What it may lack in gameplay elements, it more than makes up with a deep philosophical story that will make the player think as deeply as few games have ever managed before.

A masterpiece of audio and visual design, SOMA is atmospheric, cerebral, and occasionally frustrating.

The only thing SOMA does well is monsters. If Frictional took a lesson from Alien: Isolation and let them roam the entire map, the game would’ve had a chance to shine. Alas, every encounter is totally predictable, so they fail to sufficiently spice SOMA’s totally bland and predictable story. [Issue#203, p.77]

My favorite game of all time. No game makes you think about life the way that Soma does it. Absolute masterpiece

It’s a glorified walking simulator at its core with roughly 3 or 4 enemy encounters but the story manages to make up for a few of the shortcomings. The world building was superb, and the ending was memorable. The sound design was honestly one of the best pulled off by a video game, and this right here is a great example of just how vital good sound design is in a horror game.

A survival horror game with a thought-provoking story and scary atmosphere, SOMA suffers from gameplay that is mostly running from enemies, hiding, and getting lost going from A to B.
