Subnautica: Below Zero

User ScoreTorgall

Summary: Expansion that is sold as a squel. The rewrites are very clear because there is a plot hole galore. Way easier, dumbed-down version of Subnautica that rather poorly focuses on plot rather than mystery and the eerie exploration. The map is surprisingly small, no wonder many people call it DLC instead of a sequel. I really don't like the overland exploration because it's annoying and lacks the verticality of sea-based gameplay that is a keyfeature of Subnautica. I miss the vehicles from the original. Snowfox is useless, it handles like a cargo container not a hover bike, and there is almost no reason to use it. Prawn controls way better than in the previous game, but it's not really necessary because the game is easy and there is no need for mining. Seatruck is ok considering the small map size making the Cyclops overkill. I really like the few quality of life additions to base, and the new decorations and large room are nice. The story is all over the place. I liked the architect part but you can accidentally finish the game without even finding out about your sister, you know the reason you are there in the first place. You don't even get clear hints like in the previous game, that why you have no idea what to do regarding sister subplot, the main one is way easier with automatic beacons.

Superb writing; awesome motion capture, dubbing, and overall graphics; mediocre gameplay; some awful quick time events paired with non-skippable cutscenes (especially one in the pink goo, what they were thinking), although they can be bypassed via accessibility option. It was a long time since I had the pleasure to listen to some truly well-written and funny dialogue. Drax is hands down the best character, the movie version can't even compete. The well-done mocap is quickly noticeable, especially on Gamorra and Ko-rel. Amazing voice cast that fit very well with the writing.

Enormous step down after very good Origins. They took everything and apparently decided to make it worse. I liked many of the characters, but the gameplay is a joke when you think about it. They just made one big city that is copy, of a copy of a copy and some small locations on the outskirts of it, and that is for them good sequel. To stretch gameplay time they force you to travel the same maps and fight the wave attacks on your team - it didn't change that there is not much to do.

For me it's step down from the two previous titles. It's rather obvious that IOI wanted to be done with Hitman, and focus on other things. Missions and maps are less complex, and we get max. 3 missions stories now. They even abandoned the accents from dubbing (present in Hitman 2 but not 1). The targets are way less memorable.

Very unimpressive. I played the Torchlight I and II and although they story was always meh, I liked the gameplay. Gameplay is very basic, a big step down from previous titles. Quite a few filler content like the forts, gathering something to get account wide bonuses etc. I encountered some annoying bugs like the disappearing pet that can be brought back only by switching to some other one. I played it on gamepass, otherwise I would be pretty pissed.

It was the end of my WoW experience because after Cataclysm I stopped playing. The changes to maps where good idea on paper, and many players complained that old maps are lifeless, but that's the way it is with MMORPGS. The flying mounts in Azeroth where biggest mistake ever, it ruined core maps for me. It is also the very start of countless ways to dumb-down the game, making everything simpler for causal players.

Excellent sequel, that I enjoyed the same as the previous game. The games takes place on exotic maps, welcomed changed after very grassy European art style. New units, especially the mounted archers are quite a game changer. The mercenaries are a nice addition because you can play differently, focusing more on making gold by the means of production or taxes. The one downside is the lack of campaign storytelling that was very nice in the first game, here you just get small info before playing basically a series of fixed maps.

Review only for the campaign. After the big hype, I decided to play my first Halo game ever. Because it's a whole series I thought the plot will heavily rely on at least the previous title. After copious reading and watching recaps on YT, it turns out that they simply scrapped the buildup of Halo 5. Instead of continuation, we have a kind of soft reboot where throughout the game we learn about events that had already happened. I hoped to find something more than plot exposition about things that 343 wrote off in the background. The game begins on a high note but loses a lot of its charm when we progress to the open-world part where things get very repetitive: Go to point A; Plug in the Blue woman to the thingy; Listen to Blue woman talking with Green Man; proceed to do the same thing in other parts of the map; Oh sometimes the big red guy talks through a hologram. Before you have a chance to plug the blue woman into some apparatus you have to destroy some coils, get power cells and clear out FOBs to get access to fast travel, weapons, and vehicles. If you are a completionist you can do other very repetitive things like destroying propaganda towers or collecting audio logs. The plot is really weak, and like I said it consists mostly of Master Chief talking with the Weapon. I liked the combat, especially the grappling hook that allowed me to be more dynamic and creative on the battlefield. Boss fights are simply awful. You are trapped in a small arena with a guy that is simply a bullet sponge. They made the combat area small to hide the fact that boss AI is basic, helped by high damage and HP. The hammer guy is the worst boss I fought in a long time. He is not challenging in a good way, this fight is simply annoying. If you go into it with bad weapons you are screwed because he jumps across the room and 1-2 shots you. The grunts made my day many times with their humorous quips, so big thumbs up for that - the grunt communications officer is an especially funny one.

I like the dialogues but gameplay itself is very clunky, especially combat and movement. The marshland is especially annoying because of nonsensical map limitations. The maps are small and limited, but seem bigger because there is no fast travel so you have to run a lot from A to B and to A again. The main story is meh, but like I said the dialogues are very well done.
