The Dark Knight Rises9
Jul 22, 2012
Nolan wraps up his trilogy in a satisfying way, despite some glaring thematic issues. The film's production values were predictably outstanding and especially stunning in (real) IMAX. But I thought most of the anti-government/wall street/1% percent rhetoric fell flat. It just seemed clumsy and not fully realized. That being said, the film is wildly entertaining and a mostly worthy conclusion to the trilogy.

X-Men: First Class9
Jun 3, 2011
Insanely entertaining, largely due to the chemistry and charisma of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. The story is fun, energetic and fast-paced. The 60s setting is a welcome change of pace for the superhero genre, and I won't be surprised if its costumes and art direction receive Oscar attention. It certainly would help to be familiar with the X-Men universe to fully appreciate everything, but this is pure summer fun.

Thor5
May 28, 2011
I love superhero films, but this is certainly one of the weaker Marvel entries. The film suffers from wildly inconsistent changes in tone, going from silly to deadly serious sometimes in the midst of a scene. The special effects also were inconsistent, sometimes looking cartoonish.

Bridesmaids10
May 28, 2011
Uproariously funny. I had pains in my side at several times from laughing so hard. The entire cast is great, especially Melissa McCarthy in a wildly different role from what she's known for on television. This is the funniest film in years and an absolute delight. I can't wait to see it again.

Win Win10
Apr 26, 2011
I honestly can't imagine how someone could dislike this film. It is funny, warm, weird, and overall just incredibly enjoyable. Every character seems genuine and authentic, which is a testament to both the superb cast and the incredibly smart and witty script. Easily the best film of the first quarter of 2011.

Hanna9
Apr 26, 2011
Joe Wright is one of my favorite directors working today, and he delivers a deliciously weird and fun action film unlike anything else I've seen recently. The cast is great, especially a campy and over-the-top Blanchett, and the film features some inventive and interesting cinematography. Overall, a lot of fun.

Cabaret8
Apr 25, 2011
"Maybe This Time" was certainly a highlight, and Liza was pretty great, but having never seen this before I can't say that I was blown away. Some of the plot points were surprisingly ahead of its time, and it's production values were impressive, but it just didn't emotionally resonate with me.

Salt7
Mar 20, 2011
Great action sequences and sound work, but the story was nothing fascinating. It is worth seeing and is certainly an enjoyable two hours, but don't expect anything more than a fun thriller.
Mar 20, 2011
The Adjustment Bureau8
Mar 20, 2011
A fun, breezy genre hybrid. Parts sci-fi, romance, and thriller, The Adjustment Bureau has a light tone and does not appear to aspire to challenge its more complex sci-fi counterparts.
Feb 5, 2011
Animal Kingdom8
Feb 5, 2011
Gritty contemporary crime drama directed with plenty of twists and turns, many of which are physically startling. A modern day greek tragedy full of great performances, especially from Jacki Weaver.
Feb 2, 2011
No Strings Attached5
Feb 2, 2011
I wanted to like this film a lot more than I did. Portman and Kutcher and very charming and there are some decent laughs, but the plot ultimately felt too contrived and predictable. Mindy Kaling and Greta Gerwig are great in their small parts though.
Feb 1, 2011
Solitary Man7
Feb 1, 2011
Douglas is good and the script is smartly written, but I can't say that I found Douglas' character to be likable enough to care about how the film ended. I also can't say that I actually believed the daughter would sleep with Douglas' character either. Awfully skeezy/farfetched.

Blue Valentine10
Jan 17, 2011
Absolutely devastating. This story stuck in my head for hours after the film ended. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling give the best performances in their short but wonderful careers, and Derek Cianfrance's script and direction so clearly come from a personal place that you can't help but feel emotionally drained afterwards.

Smash His Camera9
Jan 9, 2011
Both a fascinating portrait of the first and most infamous paparazzo and a thought-provoking look at first amendment rights. Its subject is charming, but Gast goes out of his way to provide a very reasonable counterbalance. One of the best docs of 2010.
Jan 9, 2011
Restrepo8
Jan 9, 2011
Very gritty and intimate look at the day-to-day life of a combat troop in Afghanistan. These filmmakers have some real balls for being right in the middle of combat like they were.
Jan 9, 2011
I Am Love8
Jan 9, 2011
Beautifully shot and beautifully acted, this oftentimes surprising drama is a fine look inside a large European family. It did seem clear that style was placed above substance though.
Jan 8, 2011
The Art of the Steal8
Jan 8, 2011
A suspenseful and ultimately tragic look at how a man's $25 billion art collection has been completely undermined by those who do not care about his intentions or philosophy. I'm not sure why Ed Rendell would have agreed to be interviewed for this because he comes off like a real jag.
Jan 2, 2011
Dear John4
Jan 2, 2011
There is nothing offensively bad about this, it is just dull and full of completely flat characters. Tatum unfortunately doesn't bring much to his role, and the film just meanders on until it ends in a rather anticlimactic fashion.
Jan 2, 2011
When in Rome1
Jan 2, 2011
For a film with a cast so rife with comedic talent, this is painfully unfunny. Bell's charm is the only redeeming factor here, but it is not even remotely enough to make this watchable.
Jan 2, 2011
The King's Speech8
Jan 2, 2011
There aren't very many negative things to say about this exceptionally well-crafted film, as Hooper injects much-need flair into the direction and all of the leads turn in solid, if not great performances. It was a little too hoighty-toighty for my taste though, and I wish I connected to the characters a bit more. But overall, it's nearly impossible to dislike.
Jan 2, 2011
True Grit10
Jan 2, 2011
Marvelously shot by Deakins (who's likely to finally win his well-overdue Oscar) and with exceptional performances by Steinfeld, Bridges, and Damon, the Coen Brothers have created another masterpiece. On the surface this might seem like the least Coen Brothers-y movie of their oeuvre, bur the tone and themes of their previous films are still present and should please any sort of audience.
Jan 2, 2011
How Do You Know3
Jan 2, 2011
Not sure how someone as brilliant and prolific as James L. Brooks could write a script that alternates between laughably bad and insufferable. Rudd and Wilson clearly try to add as much charm to their characters as possible, but nearly everything that comes out of their mouths is simply ridiculous. Witherspoon is horribly miscast and Nicholson does not even appear to be trying.
Dec 26, 2010
Nowhere Boy8
Dec 26, 2010
Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas are great as a young John Lennon and his aunt, and the film captures the era very well. A solid biopic and certainly worth-seeing, especially for Beatles fans, but it's nothing revelatory.
Dec 26, 2010
Love and Other Drugs5
Dec 26, 2010
Despite charming performances from its leads, it ultimately can't overcome wild shifts in tone and quite possibly some of the worst and most laughably bad musical cues in any film of the last decade.
Dec 26, 2010
Megamind5
Dec 26, 2010
Completely unoffensive in its mediocrity, as it provides a few laughs with what it thinks is an atypical story but is ultimately predictable and just another generic Dreamworks animated film. I did have higher hopes for this one though because of the voice cast.
Dec 26, 2010
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I7
Dec 26, 2010
Entertaining and certainly well-crafted, but I couldn't help but look at this solely as a build-up to the final film. I wish this was better able to stand alone as a story, but I'm sure it will play very well to all Potter fanatics. On the bright side, its cinematography was unexpectedly beautiful and almost poetic. at times.
Dec 26, 2010
Black Swan10
Dec 26, 2010
Perfection--a major theme of the film and ultimately what it achieves. Portman is stunning. Aronofsky's direction is masterful. The cinematography and sound are interesting and integral to the story. This is simply a masterpiece in the psychological horror oeuvre.
Dec 26, 2010
127 Hours9
Dec 26, 2010
Franco is revelatory in what might be the year's finest performance. Boyle's style is very clearly infused into all aspects of the film, but ultimately its story is what makes it truly worthwhile.
Dec 26, 2010
The Ghost Writer9
Dec 26, 2010
A great political thriller that will pull the rug out from under you in its final scenes. It's also a return to form for Polanski, an extremely talented filmmaker, regardless of how you feel about his personal actions.
Dec 26, 2010
Exit Through the Gift Shop9
Dec 26, 2010
Equally hilarious and fascinating, Banksy's documentary on street art is a very interesting exploration into the modern art world and what exactly "art" is. By far, one of the best docs of 2010. Hopefully the Academy will recognize it, despite not being about orphans or the Holocaust.
Dec 26, 2010
Winter's Bone7
Dec 26, 2010
Maybe this was just way overhyped before I saw it, but I was completely underwhelmed. I did think Jennifer Lawrence was great and look forward to see what she does next, but the story ultimately did not resonate with me. I can't remember a time in which critics and audiences were so enamored with something, while I was so indifferent.
Dec 26, 2010
TRON: Legacy5
Dec 26, 2010
Its visuals are as stunning as its dialogue is awful. It is worth-seeing in a theater, especially in IMAX, to revel in its special effects and sound, but, my God, the dialogue is laughably bad. It also doesn't help that it's at least 30 minute too long, with an increasingly tiresome plot.
Dec 26, 2010
The Fighter9
Dec 26, 2010
A great sports drama, elevated by powerful supporting turns from Bale, Adams, and Leo. The story is uplifting, without being melodramatic, and is greatly helped by Russell's realistic direction. If Bale does not win, let alone be nominated for, an Oscar for this, I'll be shocked, as it's right up the Academy's alley.
Dec 26, 2010
8: The Mormon Proposition6
Dec 26, 2010
The message is a worthwhile one, but I'm not sure it needed a feature-length doc to tell it. There are some compelling stories of those affected by the church's actions, but they are muddled by text and figures that get a little tiresome. I was ultimately disappointed, but it is worth seeing, especially for those involved in the cause.
Dec 26, 2010
Leap Year4
Dec 26, 2010
Although predictable and a little dry, it does display Ireland's beautiful countryside and Adams and Goode are charming in their roles but deserve better.
Dec 14, 2010
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work9
Dec 14, 2010
Both intimate and heartfelt, this is a hilarious documentary that details Rivers' dedication to comedy and success. Rivers is a national treasure, and hopefully she will finally get the respect she deserves. It's a shame this didn't make the Oscars' Documentary Feature shortlist.
Dec 14, 2010
Fair Game6
Dec 14, 2010
Fair Game tells a fascinating story and features a pair of stellar performances from Watts and Penn, but ultimately is not as successful as it could have been because of some horribly anticlimactic storytelling.
Dec 11, 2010
Whip It8
Dec 11, 2010
A very pleasant film that is greatly elevated by fine acting from Ellen Page and Marcia Gay Harden. After decades in Hollywood, Drew Barrymore clearly knows her way around a film set and proved herself to be a very adept director. This movie is purely fun and escapist, and I could see teenage girls really rallying around it.
Dec 11, 2010
The Bounty Hunter2
Dec 11, 2010
There is not much to like in this pretty awful romantic "comedy" that does not have a single intentionally funny thing to laugh at. The story is predictable and cliched, the dialogue is laughably bad, and not even Jason Sudeikis (great on "SNL" and "30 Rock") can bring any humor to this.
Dec 11, 2010
Inside Job9
Dec 11, 2010
More of a horror film than a documentary, this film should be seen by every American to better understand this absolutely **** economic climate we are apart of. Absolutely one of the best docs of 2010, if the not the very best.
Dec 11, 2010
The Next Three Days5
Dec 11, 2010
This felt like more of a made-for-television movie to me because just about everything about this was mediocre. The acting was fine, the story was far too preposterous but somewhat interesting, and the direction showed absolutely no flair. There simply isn't anything special about this.
Dec 11, 2010
All Good Things3
Dec 11, 2010
A giant mess of a film. Ryan Gosling and (a surprisingly tolerable) Kirsten Dunst do the best they can with a story that can't decide what genre it belongs in. This simply just doesn't work. Andrew Jarecki, whose "Capturing the Friedmans" was fascinating, can do better than this.
Dec 11, 2010
Waking Sleeping Beauty8
Dec 11, 2010
A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Disney as the films that defined my childhood were created, which brought the studio back to life despite a clear power struggle at the top.
Nov 14, 2010
The Expendables5
Nov 14, 2010
I hoped this would be pure, unadulterated fun, but was left a little disappointed. The pacing of the film is wildly inconsistent, and while the climax is satisfying, there was just too little that was entertaining beforehand.
Nov 14, 2010
Morning Glory3
Nov 14, 2010
There are some funny moments, but they are few and far between. A lot of the dialogue is laughably bad, and, most egregiously, the musical cues are some of the worst and least subtle in recent memory. McAdams is clearly a talented actress, but her character was insufferable, and she deserves better than this dreck.
Nov 8, 2010
Due Date7
Nov 8, 2010
An enjoyable, albeit contrived, ripoff of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" that deserves to be commended for mining more humor out of "Two and a Half Men" than "Two and a Half Men" ever has.
Nov 6, 2010
RED7
Nov 6, 2010
Exactly what you would expect--a fun, mindless action-comedy that greatly benefits from the talent of the actors involved. There are some great actions scenes, but most of the fun is derived from seeing actors like Helen Mirren and John Malkovich handling machine guns.
Nov 6, 2010
Hereafter3
Nov 6, 2010
The film begins with some unimaginably bad special effects, and does not get much better from there. The plot is contrived and schmaltzy, but the actors do what they can with a script that was literally unfinished.
Oct 26, 2010
Conviction8
Oct 26, 2010
Its horrible, melodramatic trailer does little justice for this surprisingly good drama. Sam Rockwell is perfect (as usual), and not only was I really invested in these characters, but I found myself questioning the brother's innocence throughout. It is far from a perfect film, but I absolutely felt invested in the story from beginning to end.
Oct 25, 2010
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger5
Oct 25, 2010
Lucy Punch is the highlight of the film, but there is not a whole lot of appeal in the rest of the performances. The stories feel contrived, and the tone of the film is inconsistent throughout. Very disappointing. And Josh Brolin's hair is ridiculous-looking and distracting.
