Nosferatu9
Jan 16, 2025
Nosferatu is a gripping, edge of your seat thriller-horror which immerses you with it's incredible crafts and superb performances. Sitting through the first 1.5 hours of this film is a fabulous cinematic experience. The film immerses you in it's world through absolutely fantastic production design, an eerie and haunting soundtrack and sharp direction, which builds up tension and implements a sense of dread as the main character approaches the castle. The film is just incredible well-shot which makes the entire experience feel more immersive, makes for an incredibly fun, entertaining ride. The story despite being adapted from Dracula, feels wholly original due to it's distinctive style and dialogue. The film does lose a bit of steam in it's final act with it turning into a more logical, calculated film than being the captivating, mysterious one it was in the first two acts. But even so, Nosferatu is a thrilling, scary and wildly enjoyable ride into Dracula's world.

Emilia Pérez5
Jan 14, 2025
If Emilia Perez hadn't been so successful in the awards season, there is no doubt people would have moved on from this film a while ago (apart from Mexicans, where it was caused huge uproar, and rightly so). There is nothing inherently disastrous about Emilia Perez (apart from the fact it tries to present a former drug lord who abandons his/her family as a victim). It is a really well-acted, creatively done (at times), and just an allright movie, with rather nasty messages at the end of it (when you dig into what the movie's about). While the songs are catchy, the choice of taking such dark subject matter and turning it into a musical, with random sequences playing, seem completely in contrast with the story. The film often feels to be doing too much, to be dramatizing events for the sake of it, the visual style feels distracting and instead of delving into characters personalities, it goes for a by-the-numbers, approach to storytelling. Zoe Saldana's character undergoes absolutely no development from beginning to end, and the way Gascon's character is made out to be victim in the final half-hour of the film, is a disgrace. When taken out of context, the musical sequences are sometimes eye-catching and the chemistry between the two leads is strong. The best thing about the film by far the performances; Zoe Saldana is terrific and brings a severely under-written character to life, Karla Sofia Gascon's facial expressions are on point throughout, and she too brings her character to life, and Adriana Paz is really good as well. The musical score and cinematography, while competent, didn't push any boundaries. Overall, Emilia Perez is a well acted, poorly written and directed movie, which has a couple of engaging scenes but ultimately loses the audience due to abject themes to offer at its crux. Apart from Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon, the film really does not deserve to be in the conversation for any awards.

The Wild Robot8
Jan 9, 2025
The Wild Robot is an immensely charming, heartwarming film which elevates it's simple story to great heights. Visually, the movie looks spectacular and animation in specific sequences especially is incredible. The opening half-hour of the film, while still making for a decent beginning, felt a bit clunky and uneven at moments. However, from that moment on, everything clicks into gear and it turns into a beautiful tale of friendship, motherhood, and focuses on simple lessons told in a grand way. I felt at times the movie was relying too much on the direction and more technical elements to get viewers engaged, as the story was simple and didn't really delve into characters more than at surface level. But still, this movie was an amazing experience, and makes viewers fall in love with the characters and the story. The final 30 minutes give a huge payoff with the a mega action scene, making for a great spectacle and satisfying finale. The soundtrack, while I thought it was slightly generic in the beginning, is just beautifully used in the second half of the film. There is one particular scene which it sticks out, when Roz is teaching Brightbill how to fly, where the song, score and animation flow seamlessly together, making for one of the best sequences in animation in recent years. Overall, The Wild Robot makes for a fascinating, emotional crowd-pleaser, which while thin on compelling story, makes for a captivating movie experience.

Flow7
Jan 9, 2025
Flow is a beautifully animated, gorgeous looking film with a decent story to back it up. The way the movie uses visuals to do the storytelling, instead of the animals conversing mostly works really well. The first half of the movie didn't have me as engaged as I could have been. It seemed to move at a slow pace and was showing the same message repeatedly, in different ways. It was still fine, with the tsunami scene and underwater scenes being particular highlights. The sound design and musical score used in these scenes was particularly brilliant. Introductions to the dog, mongoose and other surviving animals were nice but I still wanted something more from the film. The story just didn't have me fully interested in the first half. The second half of the movie is where most of the pieces come together. It turns into a thrilling and dangerous 'lost at sea' adventure story while still incorporating some truly beautiful looking silent scenes along the way. We see the development in Cat's character from an independent and reclusive animal who doesn't trust any other animal, to a more caring and compassionate being. There are also interesting subplots that go on with the other animals, like that of a capybara, stork, dog and mongoose. One thing that prevented me from being fully invested though, was the predictable storyline here. It felt straightforward until the last 30 minutes, where it turns into a more mysterious storyline, which are definitely thought provoking, but didn't work for me that much, However, the relationship between the stork and the cat is a very interesting one, and every scene with both of them had me hooked. One particular scene; when both of them reach the top of the mountain, is one of the most stunning pieces of animation I have ever seen. The score in this movie also deserves a shout-out. It may seem slightly generic in parts, but it flows so seamlessly with every shot, perfectly complementing each scene, making for a pretty great soundtrack. The cinematography was really engaging as well, with one particular highlight being the different angles they used to approach the boat with. Overall, I was more impressed, and appreciative of the movie than engaged with it. It's highs are incredible highs, and once again, the animation is continuously gorgeous; but the story, while not bad by any means, and more engaging in the second half, felt workmanlike and predictable. Still a good film though, and definitely would recommend to see it.

The Trial of the Chicago 79
Feb 1, 2021
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a superb movie. Even on my second watch, it's as energetic and riveting as earlier. Aaron Sorkin's ability to create a setting in a simple courtroom but still keep tings fascinating and entertaining is remarkable. This is a more screenplay than direction movie, but the direction is still top-class and makes the movie much more than an Oscar-bait biopic. The whole cast is amazing, with Frank Langella, Sacha Baron Cohen and Eddie Redmayne be the standout performers, and the other members of the cast are also very good. This film has great editing which manages to keep it fascinating and intriguing. While I don't think it's really that emotionally appealing or take sThe Social Network level risks, it's still amazing in it's own way. The Trial Of The Chicago 7 is riveting, exciting, entertaining, and is filled with great performances, screenplay and really good editing.

Mank7
Jan 29, 2021
Mank is not Fincher's best film, not by any means. But I'm quite surprised to see audiences and some critics very mixed and apprehensive about the film. This is still a superbly crafted and well-acted film. There are many issues with this movie, such as relying on the audience know about the whole timeline of that period, without really giving background information. The story is more interesting than investing, and most of the movie is too complicated to understand and be invested in. The film gets pretty boring for many parts and I can see why many people dislike this movie. However, when it gets to the technical aspects and some of the dialogues, the film is spot-on. It has a shot for many technical oscars like Production Design and Cinematography. I found myself just about interested in the story and enjoyed by the starting and ending, even if I found myself a bit lost in the middle. One thing which I love though, is Seyfried and Oldman's performances, both of them are great. Mank is a good film, but when it comes to Fincher's standards it falls a bit short I must say.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom8
Jan 28, 2021
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a very good movie. It doesn't go the normal way other musicals do, but has a lot of unique style and focus on character conflict and emotions. The costumes are amazing, like the performances. Boseman and Davis give probably the best performances of their career, and the supporting cast like Turman and Domingo are both really good too. The editing, makeup and production design are superb, with some great sets and editing during the music recording scene. However, this films has some pacing issues, and gets quite boring after it's exciting premise. But other than that, it's a very sold film that also highlights important issues like racism. The character conflict is dealt with really well with some superb dialogues and banter. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is one of the better films of 2020 and should get recognition at the Oscars for various major and technical categories.

Django Unchained9
Sep 29, 2020
Django Unchained is one of Tarantino's most brutal and brilliant films. It's a great mix of comedy and drama but has all the elements of a superb thriller mystery movie. The writing's smart and the direction is superb. Each scene is really well-made and is just pure brilliant film making. The cinematography is creative and immersive, the sound effects are amazing and it never feels too long despite the 2 and a half hour running time. The whole film is really well-made and just great to watch. Christoph Waltz is brilliant in the film and deserved his oscar. The film is also brutal in it's own ways as the whole theme is about slavery. Overall, Django Unchained is just Tarantino at his finest.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)9
Sep 21, 2020
Birdman is an excellently-made comedy-drama with really sound technical aspects like that unique and interesting continuous cinematography, and sleek and quick editing. It's also a great film in terms of quality performances and quick and sharp writing. Michael Keaton and Edward Norton boss every scene they're in and deservedly got a lot of hype for the oscars. Emma Stone also portrays her character brilliantly but I actually think Naomi Watts is the total scene-stealer in this movie and should have also got praise. The camerawork in this film is immersive and the story hooks you from the first minute. The writing really balances out the dark comedic aspects of the film well and make the viewers develop strong feeling for the characters. While a few moments in the film felt unnecessary and made me bored and I have to say I don't know what the hell the ending was about, Birdman is a very solid film and a superb best picture winner.

Darkest Hour6
Aug 29, 2020
Darkest Hour was fine, I guess. Gary Oldman is brilliant and the makeup is great. But as a whole movie, it just didn't stand out. It was just like The Imitation Game in 2014, classic oscar bait (although the imitation game was much better film). It didn't delve into Churchill's life deeply and was just boring and tedious in many parts. It was a mechanical direction and storytelling, which just didn't captivate or gain my attention that much. It's definetly really good in some places and Gary Oldman deserved an oscar. The production values are stunning and it manages to have a solid first half of the film (which was the only part of the film which was consistently good). But the second half was nothing new to the biopic genre and it just wasn't creative enough to be worthy of a Best Picture nomination instead of The Florida Project or The Big Sick

Argo5
Aug 27, 2020
Argo is the overrated film of the decade. People just thing it's great cuz of the last scene. It's a boring, tedious and overlong film with bad editing (according to me) and low-stake action sequences that provide little suspense or tension. It seemed extremely slow-paced and boring throughout. It does have few good elements here and there and is quite a technically sound film, but really that's it. I can't believe this film won any oscars, let alone best picture and best screenplay. Argo is an overrated film and nowhere near the other films nominated in the best picture category in 2012.

Inside Out9
Aug 26, 2020
Inside Out is by far Pixar's best film since Toy Story 3 (2010). It provides an emotional and interesting look into a child's soul. The voice acting is really good and obviously by the standards of pixar the animation is stunning. It's really creative and inventive with twists and turns and surprises combined with a great story. Inside Out had both it's funny and emotional moments and great characters. The screenplay for this film is really good and it packs an incredibly well-made and emotional third act even as it is rather tedious and boring in the middle. But overall, Inside Out is another fine piece of art added to the Pixar cannon.

Cars 34
Aug 26, 2020
Although it's a slight improvement on Cars 2, Cars 3 is still one of Pixar's most weakest and boring films. Although the concept of the plot and story was interesting, the movie just doesn't make you feel anything for the new characters. I didn't feel emotional in any of the emotional scenes nor really that thrilled and happy at the racing and comedic sequences with every single sequence feeling very exhausting and slow. The voice-acting and killer ending were one of the film's few strong points. But even then we have seen loads better from Pixar that this.

Da 5 Bloods8
Aug 25, 2020
Da 5 Bloods is one of Spike Lee's best films according to me. It's a very good, urgent and serious film. The flashbacks are handled really well, and it has it's emotional and funny moments too. The first half is admittedly extremely slow and overlong. This film has bad editing for the first hour, with it trying to build up the whole story too much. But Spike Lee's direction is very deft and sharp with he having a proper style which you can't help but admire. This film is some of the best cinematography of the year and some good sound effects. Da 5 Bloods makes up for a slow start with a fast-paced, thrilling and action-packed second half with a lot of twists and turns. Propelled by an unforgettable Delroy Lindo performance, Da 5 Bloods is one Spike Lee's most impactful, thrilling, affecting if slow film to date

Selma10
Aug 23, 2020
Selma is one of the most moving and rousing biopics I have ever seen. This movie got a lot of snubs at the oscars, it only got Best Picture and Best Song??!!! This film is one of the best edited movies I have ever seen and has a terrific lead performance by David Oyelowo at it's heart. It got snubbed for Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the oscars. SHAME ON YOU OSCARS!! This film really manages to convey brilliant storytelling with emotional and moving moments. It's balance on Luther King's personal life is well-handled and whenever it does come, it's all about the difficulties he faces, which makes it a lot more intriguing and interesting. It manages to convey racist themes well and creates a realistic and strong portrayal **** man!

Beauty and the Beast9
Aug 23, 2020
Beauty And The Beast was the first ever animated film to be nominated for best picture at the oscars, and deservedly so. This is a very romantic and enchanting tale of one of the most popular old stories of today. It doesn't overplay the romance, but instead drops subtle hints and keeps it's stakes remarkably low, which make the film seem magical and thrilling. The songs are really good, and the animation is excellent. Beauty And The Beast 1991 really sums up Disney's amazing spell in the late 80s and early 90s, when it produced some of the best animated films ever.

Onward6
Aug 22, 2020
Onward is not even close to the standards that the Toy Story franchise and Wall-E were. It's a subpar pixar movie with nothing much new but heavily borrowing from other films. It dies have some nice elements and a few laughs. And also as for all pixar films, great animation. But it just wasn't able to invigorate the magic and enchantment that the other animated films did, with rather bland characters and a boring plot

Ocean's Eleven8
Aug 22, 2020
Ocean's Eleven is a fun crowd-pleaser that will resonate in many people's heart. The script is very witty and funny, and packs many surprises and some fun characters along the way. The ending is unexpected but still makes sense at the same time. The script messes with your brain, makes you get all the possible solutions and still be wrong. The cast is very good and the sets are fantastic, especially the duplicate bank vault scene. While it definitely is slow for the first half and the editing is choppy in some places, that doesn't disguise a brilliantly made second half of the film.

WALL-E10
Aug 22, 2020
Wall-E is a masterpiece. I watched this movie on Disney+ 10 mins ago. I was so moved by it that after the film I just remained stationary for a whole minute, before clapping my hands for pixar's most astonishing achievement. The animation was incredible, the space scenes were just exquisite and the spaceship scene was wonderfully done, with some great creativity behind the making of the whole thing. The opening sequence of Wall-E was stunning. There's no dialogue but even then you're hooked to the story. This film not only sheds a light on pollution and the need to take care of the environment, but also is telling us what the earth in 500 years might be. The chemistry between Wall-e and Eve is brilliant and it also manages to be funny by adding a few hilarious characters in a superb script. Wall-E is a colossal achievement in terms of animation and screenplay for an animated film. This can surely be considered one of Pixar's best, if not the best film.

The Lion King8
Aug 22, 2020
I know I know. People will say I'm a idiot for giving The Lion King 2019 a 8 out of 10. Maybe they're justified. I haven't seen the original, so I can't really compare it. But I do think that people are so focused in comparing it with the originals that they don't look at it like an individual movie. It's like if it doesn't live up to the standard of the original, then it's bad. But I found this film to be quite decent. Maybe I was a bit biased because of the mind-blowing CGI. Even people who hate this movie have to admit the CGI style of the movie was simply astonishing. The fact to detail put here is incredible. Especially the lion's cave and jungle scene, which was one of the most realistic visuals I have ever seen. Add to that some pretty well-done sequences and a thrilling final fight, I think this film is really good. But I'm not saying that it's a perfect film, it's nowhere near it. The pacing for one is a huge issue. It's repeating the same mistake as Frozen 2. Focusing too much on recreating the opening scene. Simba doesn't even run away until an hour into the film. It's building towards an end which is thrilling but the set-up is bad. The story line and the pacing are not good. But still I enjoyed The Lion King for what it was, an astounding piece of art with fun characters and great sequences.

First Man9
Aug 22, 2020
First Man is great! I watched this movie yesterday on Netflix and was totally into it from the first second. Almost everything is perfect. It didn't really focus much on Neil Armstrong's daughter's death or on his personal life which turned out to be a very good thing. They didn't overdo it with the emotional aspects as well and kept everything remarkably believable. Add to that truly stunning sound effects ad you have a sensational watch. From a technical standpoint, First Man is truly incredible with astonishing visual effects, great camerawork and superb editing. The fact that this didn't win, or WASN'T EVEN NOMINATED for editing and cinematography at the oscars didn't make any sense. Possibly the only problem I had was the middle, when they seemed to slow down the pace of the film too much and just focus on the mission of docking was a bit boring and annoying. But even then, there's no doubt First Man is a feat of film making, with technical brilliance, great performances and direction!!!

The Shape of Water7
Jul 26, 2020
The Shape Of Water did not deserve to get best picture. It won over Get Out, Lady Bird and Dunkirk??!! It's a good film, but just not a great one. I personally don't like how much audiences hate this movie.I think it's a really good technical achievement and has some outstanding performances. But it's a huge oscar bait. With Guillermo Del Toro as director and you have Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins in the cast with a score by Alexandre Desplat, what more could the oscars ask for? The movie is quite bland to me in the second half of the film. It starts off brilliantly, with a great script and beautiful production design. The film doesn't quite reach those levels in the second half, with it just feeling way too forced and dull. The ending is great though, with a heart-wrenching sequence. The score, editing, production design and costumes are masterful. Sally Hawkins and Richard Jenkins are outstanding in the film, with Del Toro's direction also noteworthy. But the script just feels way too plucky and bland. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a really good movie. IT's just that, Best picture?? Not thank you.

Ford v Ferrari6
Jul 26, 2020
Ford v Ferrari is a so-so film. I do not get why this film was nominated for best picture. It looked like a Christopher Nolan film with very little sense of where it was going. It's too focused on Ken Miles personal life rather than showing the challenges and difficulties of racing. Also, I was highly doubtful that it was historically accurate, with numerous things out of place. Sure, it's a brilliant technical achievement. The racing scenes are edited to perfection, while having some phenomenal sound effects. The special effects and cinematography are great and I fully support the fact that it won oscars for Sound and Editing. The score and performances are noteworthy. But when it comes to storytelling and script, it finishes before the finish line.

Moneyball10
Jul 26, 2020
Moneyball is one of the most entertaining and thrilling films I have seen of late. With a couple of really good performances by Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and especially Brad Pitt, it's one of the best sports films since 2010. The direction and writing is superb with mixing aroung with different plotlines and never sticking to one, making for a hugely entertaining ride. It doesn't focus too much on baseball either, showing glimpses of the difficulties and challenges that he faces. At the same time, it doesn't dwell on that too much. It's one of those sports films that actually work. The first act really builds up the film, while the third act round it off superbly. It also has some great editing and cinematography. Moneyball is a great film!

Get Out10
Jul 7, 2020
Get Out-simply one of the great horror films of the 21st century. No other way to put it. A masterpiece all over, and can you believe this came from JORDAN PEELE from the Key and Peele show? The best thing about this film is that it doesn't focus on the scares much. Sure, the scares come and when they do they're great. In fact, it could be a brilliant thriller film if it wanted to. It's not one of those movies which have way too many scares, with no focus being put upon the storytelling. The pace of the movie is really fast, which is good as in some horror films you feel like they focus more upon the setup and just deliver jump scares at the end. The performances are really good. Daniel Kaluuya is brilliant in the film. Just watch that scene where he first goes into the Sunken Place, excellent acting. I think Allison Williams goes really under the radar as she also gives a good performance. The screenplay and score was outstanding building that feeling of dread and realization that he couldn't get out of the place but was just stuck here. The story is fabulous with so many inventive and creative things making twists all the time. The final act is great, right when you understand everything on one go in that TV conversation scene. There's no wonder that this film won Best Original Screenplay at the oscars

Coco9
Jul 7, 2020
Coco is a brilliant film! The best thing about it are the songs, especially "Remember Me". But really all the songs are very emotional and make people cry just listening to them. This was definitely one of Pixar's most original ideas for a film at that time after just dishing out sequels. Somehow Lee Unkrich has managed to build on that heart-wrenching ending to Toy Story 3 with another movie that's jam-packed with emotion and heart. The opening 30-45 minutes is really what you'd expect to come from Pixar and it's a bit predictable. But the real magic starts when the Land of the dead comes, which is filled with fantastic world-building. The animation is stunning, from the vibrant colors and lights to the splendid reconstruction of a Mexican tradition. The story just brings so many twists and turns from there with a whole family heritage story and an aspiring musician's tale also. The whole Land Of The Dead is done beautifully from the buildings, bridge etc. Its filled throughout with a colorful theme that just makes you feel so happy. The masterpiece in here is the final act, which is by far one of the best of Pixar's films. the "Remember Me" song scene is executed perfectly with no musical number, but instead lets you take in the emotion of the moment. Coco is just a sensational film!

Shazam!9
Jun 27, 2020
Shazam is a really good film. Filled with humor, fun and a great, if predictable story, it's a definite return to form for DC after Suicide Squad and Justice League. The standout performances here are from Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer, who give great comedic performances. The villain is really well-developed in this movie, giving us a rare but thoughtful insight into his mind. Shazam really proves that a movie doesn't have to be extremely serious like The Dark Knight to be a good one.

Ferdinand5
Jun 17, 2020
"Gee Ferdinand, I wish the world worked like that for ya", is the line said by ferdinand's father to him at the starting, just before he was going to leave the ranch, is a great line. The problem is that the movie never takes that forward, it just ends up being a hugely predictable story and a shabby script and dialogue. Another problem was the ending, which is sooo like blue sky studios. If it were pixar or dreamworks, they would have made it much more interesting and emotional. I also felt they ruined it by showing that Nina come at the end, for no damn reason at all. It should explored the message it wanted to convey more, instead of just making it a bland story with a bad ending. But to the film's credit, it had great animation and you can't deny that it's filled with wit and humor, making it a fun ride throughout, also having some great voice-acting. But in the end, it's just another bad attempt by blue sky studios.

A really good film. I really think this film should come under critical reevaluation shortly, like The Shining (1980), because its laughable that this film got lower metacritic scores than the next film, ad even the last which was a bad film. It does not achieve what the Lord Of The Rings did, I don't think its even close, but still a really good film. Right from the brilliant production design and costumes, to the stunning visuals, almost everything goes in the right direction. Martin Freeman and Sir Ian Mckellen both give fine performances. Although you can't deny that it's extremely slow-paced as the first hour itself consists of the dwarves meeting at Bilbo's home when it should have been done in less than 30 minutes, a really engaging and appealing movie!

Dunkirk10
May 17, 2020
Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan's second best film (after Inception). It's about thousands of French and British soldiers stranded on the shore of the french sea town, Dunkirk. There's only one word to describe it-dazzling. The amazing thing is, the movie never shows the enemy, but even then manages to be filled with tension and drama, without any real large scale action sequences. Hoyte Van Hoytema's cinematography is beautiful, and sound and visual effects and great. One of the best war movies of all time

I just cannot see why so many people hate this film. Ok, maybe the film is quite slow-paced, and the humor will be very strange and weird to some people, but to me, Jojo Rabbit is great. An anti-hate satire, having a clever mix of comedy and drama. Although its definitely not a laugh out loud movie, Waititi's riduculously funny take on the **** will have you smiling throughout.

Amazing film. Everything is spot on. The performance of Johansson, Driver and Dern are oscar worthy. But that's only because of Baumbach's terrific screenplay and directing. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets7
May 10, 2020
A good movie. It's even more darker and chilling than its predecessor, with a better storytelling than the original , and a scene-stealing performance from Kenneth Branagh. The final fight with basilisk is arguably one the franchises most stunning VFX scenes. But it really fails to keep itself from dragging with a 160 min. running time, its faithful approach really does signify that Colombus is aiming this only for the kids, and, like the first one, fails to reach the standards of the book. In short, it just lacks the vibrant charm, and the enchantment of the original

Good movie. On the bright side, the sets are great, fabulous special effects, the performance of the young cast is really good, and it has a truly mesmerizing score. Its an epic start to arguably the best movie series in the history of cinema. Everything is spot on- the joke, the emotional weight, the adventurous story. This movie changed not only the animation industry, but changed the movie industry itself

A masterclass in storytelling, and a beautifully made film. The sets are great, and there are some truly amazing visual and special effects. The cast is on there a-game, and it can surely be considered as the franchises's best.
