The Revenant8
Mar 31, 2017
Though it's a little too long, The Revenant is still well-worth seeing thanks to its stunning cinematography, superb direction and Leonardo DeCaprio's committed performance. DiCaprio manages to convey emotion and keep audiences mesmerised with very little dialogue, delivering one of his best performances to date. As I said, it does go on for too long, but from a cinematic point of view, this is an incredible achievement and one of 2015's best.

Pacific Rim3
Oct 25, 2016
NOTE: All my reviews right now are being published as 0/10 for some reason. I actually gave this movie a three, so ignore the current rating. I went into this movie expecting nothing but big dumb fun. What I got was big and dumb, but sadly lacking in "fun". Too much of the film is centred on one-dimensional human characters just talking while we impatiently wait for the action to start again. I know we should care about the characters and everything, but even with all this time spent with them, I couldn't care less about whether they lived or died. The main character is so bland that I can't even remember his name (or really anything he does) and his love interest is just as bland (though at least they tried to give her a backstory). Idris Elba's character was the only one who had any personality. Even the Robot-Monster fights occupy about 15 minutes of the running time and are mostly done in darkness. This is disapointing, since Guillermo Del Toro is such a great director, and this film should have been so much better. Instead, it begs unfortunate comparisons to Michael Bay's "Transformers" series. If you're fine with there being more uncompelling human "drama" (if it can even be called that) than the action they promised us, then good for you. Otherwise, I can't recommend this. 3/10.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me7
Oct 25, 2016
The last half hour or so is a bit scattershot, but this sequel still contains enough laughs to recommend. It's true that less sex jokes could be appreciated (and more focus on other James Bond tropes worth making fun of) but Mike Myers' work is so inspired, it's hard to complain (particularly as Dr. Evil). Some of the jokes don't really work, but the ones that do land are often hilarious. If you aren't bothered by occasionally juvenile humour, then I'd recommend checking this one out. Overall, a fun parody with enough laughs to power last its weaker moments.

Suicide Squad8
Oct 8, 2016
Suicide Squad is far from perfect, but in spite of all its flaws, it's a wildly entertaining movie with a great cast and a healthy dose of humour that was missing from previous DCEU films. Margot Robbie is easily the standout of the cast with her energetic, scene-stealing portrayal of Harley Quinn, though Will Smith and Viola Davis deserve credit too. I may be in the minority here, but I also thought that Jared Leto was much better than people give him credit for. The Joker-Harley dynamic was easily my favourite part of the film. Of course, I still had problems. Not all of the squad were terribly memorable (they could have done the whole movie without Katana and Captain Boomarang) and the main antagonist was underwhelming. But Suicide Squad is still a fun movie with enough humour and action to overcome its flaws. A HUGE step-up from Batman v Superman.

Lucy7
Oct 3, 2016
Lucy is utterly bonkers and sometimes cheesey, but Scarlet Johansson's charisma and Luc Besson's stylish direction make it an enjoyable action-thriller despite its flaws. I will say that certain viewers are likely to be annoyed by the implausibility of the plot, but viewers looking for a purely entertaining ride should be satisfied. The action is pretty solid, as are the performances and visuals. Johansson makes for a strong leading lady, and the movie does have pretty interesting themes about how the fabric of reality could be altered as we develop. Overall, silliness aside, Lucy rises on the strength of its star and stylishness to become a wildly entertaining ride with plenty of fun. 7/10.

A Most Violent Year8
Oct 1, 2016
Led by a typically committed performance from Oscar Isaac, A Most Violent Year is a dark, gritty crime drama, and one of 2014's best films. Isaac continues to establish himself as one of his generation's finest actors, and Jessica Chastain and Albert Brooks shine in their supporting roles. JC Chandor directs the film exceptionally, and while some may find the pacing too slow, it's well-worth watching for those who liked Chandor's previous films and are fans of Isaac and Chastain. Overall, A Most Violent Year is a great film with superb performances, great writing and expert direction. A most remarkable film.

Dumb and Dumber8
Sep 27, 2016
It's no masterpiece, but Dumb and Dumber is a largely entertaining road comedy elevated by the delightful chemistry between Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Both are in top form as the film's dim-bulb protagonists, and help provide the film with many laughs. Sure, it's little more than a string of gags tied together by a relatively thin plot, but in terms of entertainment, it certainly delivers. If gross-out comedy and "dumb" humour isn't your thing, I'd look elsewhere. For those who like Jim Carrey comedies, I'd recommend you check it out.

Ghostbusters7
Sep 27, 2016
It isn't QUITE as great as people say (please don't kill me), but Ghostbusters is a fun supernatural comedy that benefits highly from the talents of its cast - especially Bill Murray, who pretty much steals the film with his deadpan delivery and charisma. However, the main flaw for me is that the plot takes a while to really start, which is a little annoying. Nonetheless, if pure entertainment is what you seek, I would probably direct you to this. For all its flaws, it's still a fun flick with plenty of good laughs.

The Social Network9
Sep 27, 2016
Thanks to Aaron Sorkin's brilliant script, David Fincher's stylish direction and fantastic performances from its young cast, The Social Network is a fascinating, witty and engrossing look at the founding of Facebook. The cast are amazing. Jesse Eisenberg gives a career-best performance as Mark Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer shine as well. The film also benefits from unique, stylish storytelling, helped by wonderful editing and inspired screenwriting. Who knew you could make such a great film out of the founding of a social media website? Overall, this is a well-crafted, superbly acted film, and one of the best of 2010.

Pixels7
Sep 2, 2016
What were people expecting from this? Yes, it's dumb. Yes, some of the jokes are a tad too lowbrow. But it's still Adam Sandler's most entertaining film in years. The visuals are good, the concept is fun and the cast (particularly Peter Dinkleage and Josh Gad) are clearly committed. Obviously, there are flaws. Some of the gags miss the mark, and not all of it is entirely plausible. But for all its shortcomings, Pixels is a decent film with some funny ideas and flashy visuals.

Sing Street8
Sep 2, 2016
Though it isn't the most original film in the world, "Sing Street" is an energetic, upbeat and surprisingly touching musical with irresistible charm and great songs. The performances are excellent, with an Oscar-worthy turn from Jack Reynor and great work from its younger stars. The music is toe-tapping and catchy, and the movie blends feel-good optimism with heartfelt drama wonderfully. It also manages to recreate the feel of 1980's Dublin perfectly, and should leave a smile on your face by the time the credits roll. Overall, Sing Street is another success for John Carney and one of the best movies of 2016.
Sep 2, 2016
Trumbo7
Sep 2, 2016
It isn't perfect, but Trumbo manages to do it's fascinating true story justice with an engaging narrative and a fantastic performance from Bryan Cranston. The supporting cast also shine, with entertaining turns from Helen Mirren and John Goodman. The score was fantastic. It might be one of the best scores of the last couple of years. There were a few flaws- certain parts of it felt somewhat like parts of a TV movie, and it could have gone into more detail about Trumbo's plight. Nonetheless, Trumbo is an interesting film that's both entertaining and educational- and honours its subject with a solid script and strong performances. 7/10.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas5
Aug 26, 2016
How The Grinch Stole Christmas features a hilarious performance from Jim Carrey, but that isn't quite enough to cover for a predictable plot, uninteresting characters and cheesy dialogue. Though the scenes with The Grinch are usually somewhat entertaining, the rest of the movie is sickly sweet and bloated (this concept just wasn't meant for feature length). Overall, though not without its moments, How The Grinch Stole Christmas betrays Jim Carrey with Christmas movie clichés and an overstretched plot.
Aug 8, 2016
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.7
Aug 8, 2016
The Man From U.N.C.L.E is a lightweight but undeniably fun spy film that makes up for its lack of substance with impressive set pieces and great chemistry between its leads. There is plenty of fun banter and action to enjoy, and though the plot is admittedly rather light, it's hard to complain in the face of the picture's stylishness and sense of fun. Overall, The Man From U.N.C.L.E delivers just what it promises- a fun, enjoyable spy flick that overcomes a lack of substance with action, humour and Guy Ritchie's cool, slick style.
Aug 4, 2016
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice5
Aug 4, 2016
Though not the disaster it could have been, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is too overstuffed and messy to satisfy. To be fair, there were some aspects of it that I liked- Ben Affleck makes a surprisingly good Batman, Jesse Eisenberg steals every scene he's in and Gal Gadot's Wonder-Woman is impressive. But while Batman's scenes are interesting, Superman's scenes are mostly dull and lacking in any emotional impact (and it doesn't help that Superman himself seems so lifeless for most of the film). The titular battle is underwhelming and the plot is too convenient. Overall, though it is occasionally entertaining, BvS: DOJ gets bogged down by an overstuffed plot, unconvincing scenarios and a serious lack of energy or fun. Still, it left me wanting a Batman solo movie.
Aug 2, 2016
Finding Dory9
Aug 2, 2016
Though not quite as good as its predecessor, Finding Dory is still a funny, moving and beautifully animated follow-up with characteristically hilarious work from Ellen DeGeneres as the title character. Like the best Pixar movies, it manages to be hilarious and poignant at the same time. There are some great new additions to the cast, particularly Ed O' Neil. The animation, as one would expect from a Pixar film, was stunning. On the whole, Finding Dory is a hugely satisfying sequel that kids and adults should enjoy.

Jason Bourne8
Jul 29, 2016
Though not the best instalment in the franchise, Jason Bourne benefits from more strong work from Matt Damon and exhilarating action scenes. The film's biggest issue really is the absense of Tony Gilroy. He brought something to the franchise that this movie doesn't have. Still, Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones are welcome additions to the series, and it's a pleasure to see Matt Damon return to the franchise. The car chase scenes are magnificently done. So overall, while not entirely nessecary, Jason Bourne mostly compensates for its flaws with an action-packed plot and charismatic performances. 7.5/10.
Jul 28, 2016
The Bourne Legacy8
Jul 28, 2016
Though it doesn't reach the heights of its predecessors, The Bourne Legacy is a well-made sequel with a strong performance from Jeremy Renner, and impressive action scenes. Matt Damon is certainly missed, but Renner proves more than capable of carrying the film on his own. The plot is intriguing and action packed, and Tony Gilroy writes and directs the film very well. Overall, The Bourne Legacy may not live up to the first three, but entertains nonetheless due to its capable cast, and high-octane action scenes. 7.5/10.
Jul 28, 2016
The Bourne Ultimatum9
Jul 28, 2016
Fast-paced, thrilling and smart, The Bourne Ultimatum closes the original Bourne trilogy with an action-packed spy-thriller that should prove immensely satisfying to fans of the franchise. The action scenes were thrilling and fantastically edited. The performances were very strong, and the script and direction were both impressive. Final Verdict: a great addition to a great series that manages to be both exhilarating and intelligent. 9/10.
Jul 28, 2016
The Bourne Supremacy9
Jul 28, 2016
The rare sequel that improves on the original, The Bourne Supremacy might also be the best movie in the franchise. It has a great emotional arc, and adds more gravitas to the character of Jason Bourne. The action scenes are amazingly done, with a fast-paced plot that's packed with tension. In short, The Bourne Supremacy is a non-stop thrill ride that delivers glorious action and compelling emotional drama.
Jul 28, 2016
The Bourne Identity8
Jul 28, 2016
The Bourne Identity is an interesting, well-made and thrilling start to the Jason Bourne franchise. Matt Damon fits the title role perfectly, and the script manages to focus on both action and character development. It's certainly the least propulsive of the franchise, but nevertheless, there are still plenty of impressive action scenes to keep you on the edge of your seat. Overall, The Bourne Identity kicks off the Bourne franchise with a fun spy thriller that features a charismatic performance from Matt Damon.
Jul 26, 2016
The Big Short8
Jul 26, 2016
A smart, funny and in-depth look at the financial crash of 2008. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, John Magaro and Finn Whitrock gave fantastic performances, and the script featured a great balance of comedy and drama. Don't worry if you can't quite follow what's going on, because even if it's hard to understand, there's still the outstanding performances and memorable dialouge to enjoy. Overall, The Big Short is a relevant, well-directed film and one of the best movies of 2015.
Jul 21, 2016
The Avengers7
Jul 21, 2016
The Avengers is a fun, action-packed superhero movie that brings some of Marvel's greatest heroes together with mostly entertaining results. The film features a good balance of wry humour and action, and even allows its characters to have flaws, adding enough dramatic tension to match its blockbuster scale. Tom Hiddleston shines as Loki, making him the best villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The rest of the cast all get their chance to shine, thanks to a script that successfully gives them all a fair share of screen time. However, I did have a few issues- the climax went on a little too long for my liking, and the plot could be a bit slow- but overall, The Avengers compensates for its flaws with an action-packed plot and a talented cast. Good for superhero fans.

The Jungle Book 23
Jul 19, 2016
I love the original Jungle Book. It's one of my favourite childhood movies and I still consider it one of the best animated movies of all time. It had great songs, unforgettable characters and animation that still holds up pretty well. This movie has songs that are mostly forgettable, one-dimensional characters, and mediocre animation. John Goodman gives it his all, but there's only so much he can do with a script that is so content to steal from the original. Baloo the bear has been made into a bland parody of himself, Bagheera does nothing but nag constantly and Mowgli has lost any character that he had. Overall, this is pretty much any inferior copy of the original. If you want a good version of Rudyard Kipling's book, either watch the first movie or the recent remake. Both are much better than this.
Jul 19, 2016
American Hustle8
Jul 19, 2016
American Hustle is a riotously funny, endlessly witty, and superbly acted film with memorable characters and great dialouge. Every member of the cast gets a chance to shine, and shine they do- especially Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence. Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner all turn in Oscar-worthy performances as well. David O. Russel directs the film with plenty of energy, and the script is full of great lines and even pathos. Overall, this is a great movie and one of 2013's best.
Jul 19, 2016
Cloverfield7
Jul 19, 2016
Cloverfield is a suspenseful, engaging found-footage monster movie with solid performances and lots of tension. There is plenty of suspense and surprisingly, even emotion in the film, with enough monster action to keep you on the edge of your seat. Obviously, if shaky camera work makes you nauseous, you may want to avoid this. But if you're looking for a fresh, entertaining creature feature, I'd reccomend this. Overall, a good movie.
Jul 17, 2016
Inside Llewyn Davis9
Jul 17, 2016
Bleak, soulful and powerfully acted, Inside Llewyn Davis is not only one of the Coens' best movies, it's also quite possibly the best movie of 2013. Oscar Isaac leads the cast with a performance so mesmerising, it's a mystery as to why he wasn't nominated for an Oscar. The supporting cast, particularly John Goodman, also turn in fantastic performances. The production design, as one would expect from a Coens film, was amazing. There were plenty of memorable songs (my favourite being "Please, Mr. Kennedy") and great dialouge. Keep in mind, it's not always easy to watch- after all, the central theme of it is failure- but nevertheless, it's still a great movie, highly recommended to fans of the Coen Brothers' previous work.
Jul 15, 2016
Alvin and the Chipmunks5
Jul 15, 2016
After a decent start, Alvin and the Chipmunks soon becomes a tired, predictable and often grating film with little merit beyond its cute animation. The three main characters are devoid of personality, and while they may win over the kiddies, they will most likely annoy adults. Jason Lee meanwhile, looks depressed to even be in the movie, and it's not hard to see why. The only funny part of the movie is David Cross, who brings much more energy to the picture than it deserves. So why did I give it a five and not a two, I hear you ask? Because the beginning does have its moments. That, and I'm feeling generous. Overall, it may please young children, but Alvin and the Chipmunks will do little for their parents, and fans of the original cartoon looking for nostalgia will probably feel cheated.
Jul 14, 2016
Neighbors7
Jul 14, 2016
Though its final act loses steam and the vulgarity is a tad overdone, Bad Neighbours' talented cast and mostly funny script are enough to keep things afloat. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne were as funny as ever, while Zac Efron displays a surprising range of comedic gifts. The jokes, while sometimes overly crude, are often hilarious, and the film makes the most out of its solid premise. During the last third or so, however, it grows a bit tiresome. It kind of abandons its themes about the anxieties of getting older and starts to feel slightly repetitive. Still, all complaints aside, Bad Neighbours is a fun battle-of-the-ages comedy that should please Seth Rogen fans- though it's certainly not for the easily offended.
Jul 6, 2016
Now You See Me 27
Jul 6, 2016
As with the original, Now You See Me 2 makes up for its lack of substance with charismatic stars and an intriguing plot. The cast were as good as ever, with Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and Morgan Freeman in particular, adding to their characters and making them more interesting. Isla Fisher's character was missed, but her replacement was energetic enough to fill the void. There were plenty of plot twists (some clever, some a bit far-fetched) to keep your interest throughout. There was a good balence between humour and thrills as well. Bottom Line: if you enjoyed the first one, you'll probably enjoy this. If not, you probably won't think much of it. Hopefully, this does well enough to justify a third instalment in the trilogy.
Jul 6, 2016
Now You See Me8
Jul 6, 2016
Now You See Me may be a bit light on substance, but it's still stylish and well-acted enough to entertain. The cast were all excellent, bringing plenty of energy to the movie and making the most out of an interesting premise. The magic tricks performed, while not always entirely plausible, were fun to watch as well. Some may find it too slick and twisty, but if you're looking for a fun, entertaining caper flick, this should satisfy you. Overall, a fun movie with enough tricks up its sleeve to make up for its flaws.
Jul 5, 2016
Deadpool8
Jul 5, 2016
Despite occasionally feeling like a one-joke premise stretched thin, Deadpool is a very entertaining send-up of the typical superhero formula with a hilarious performance from Ryan Reynolds. It did have some issues- the pacing was a bit too fast and the villains weren't great- but there were still plenty of laughs and witty one-liners to keep things going. Overall, Deadpool is a fun, action-packed movie that compensates for its flaws with a script that captures the essence of the foul-mouthed anti-hero and hilarious fourth-wall jokes. Great for Deadpool fans.
Jul 1, 2016
Ted8
Jul 1, 2016
The plot is familiar, but Ted makes up for this with Seth McFarlane's hilarious brand of edgy humour and offers the timeless pleasure of watching a teddy bear get stoned. The premise is simple- a teddy bear comes alive and grows up to be a swearing, alcoholic slacker. It's a great idea, and while the movie occasionally feels like a series of skits, it's hard to complain when the jokes are this funny. If you don't like crude humour, then this won't make you laugh. But if you're a McFarlane fan - and I certainly am - you're in for a treat. Overall, Ted is a very funny, if unevenly structured comedy and one of the funniest movies of 2012.
Jun 24, 2016
Victor Frankenstein7
Jun 24, 2016
Victor Frankenstein is not without its flaws, but on the whole, it's an interesting, visually striking and thoroughly well-acted take on a classic tale. Daniel Radcliffe gives an impressive performance as Igor, James McAvoy does a good job as the title character and Andrew Scott makes for a good antagonist. As I mentioned, I did have a few gripes- not all of the plot elements were entirely plausible and the only major female character in the movie does pretty much nothing for the plot. That said, there is still plenty to enjoy in the movie- McAvoy and Radcliffe had great chemistry and the production design was amazing. Overall, Victor Frankenstein may anger purists, but it's a fun movie that gives an iconic tale an intruiging twist. 7/10.
Jun 14, 2016
X-Men: Apocalypse8
Jun 14, 2016
Although not without its flaws, X-Men: Apocalypse is a solid addition to the franchise with a great cast, plenty of action and a solid villain. Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique has become a stronger character than ever, while Evan Peters' Quicksilver continues to steal the show. Michael Fassbender gives another strong performance as Magneto, continuing to make him a more believable character. I've read a lot of complaints that the villain was underdeveloped. Now, yes, he was a bit, but thanks to Oscar Isaac's menacing performance, he still serves his purpose. I did find it a tad overstuffed -Rose Byrne's character didn't really need to be in it- but all flaws aside, it was still very enjoyable. The new characters such as Nightcrawler were great, and it brings the "First Class" trilogy to a satisfying close. The final verdict: It's probably best suited to X-Men fans but for all its flaws, it's a fun entry to the franchise and better than the reviews would suggest. 7.5/10.
Jun 14, 2016
X-Men: Days of Future Past8
Jun 14, 2016
Quite possibly the best X-Men movie to date. It has plenty of action, humour and drama to please fans of the franchise, and a surprisingly smart story as well. You probably have to watch some of the other movies to fully understand it, but it's still entertaining enough to please casual viewers as well as die-hard fans. Quicksilver was a great character, and one I look forward to seeing more of in future instalments. Hugh Jackman is better than ever as Wolverine, with the rest of the cast giving solid performances as well. Peter Dinkleage also makes for a solid villain. On the whole, X-Men: Days of Future Past is a fun movie that matches its blockbuster scale with a smart narrative and fine performances.
Jun 14, 2016
X-Men: First Class8
Jun 14, 2016
With an action-packed plot, outstanding performances and plenty of character-driven drama, X-Men: First Class successfully breathes new life into the X-Men franchise. The whole cast (especially Fassbender, McAvoy and Lawrence) were excellent, allowing us to really feel for their characters. The action scenes were also impressively done. Various characters such as Mystique are made into stronger characters as their backstories are revealed. The only problem I had was that I found the villains (not including Magneto) a bit weak. Other than that, this was a fun, hugely satisfying prequel and one of the best X-Men movies to date.
Jun 12, 2016
Raiders of the Lost Ark8
Jun 12, 2016
Although slightly overrated, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a fun, action-packed adventure, and a great start to the franchise. Harrison Ford does a great job in the lead role, giving him loads of wit and Han Solo-ish charm. The set pieces are pretty impressive, as is the action, and the characters are good. Overall, "Raiders" isn't a deep, philosophical masterpiece that leaves you contemplating life, but it's a purely entertaining adventure picture that stands the test of time pretty well. Definitely recommended for action-adventure fans.
May 27, 2016
The Ridiculous 67
May 27, 2016
It's no "Blazing Saddles" but The Ridiculous Six is a pretty entertaining parody of westerns, and a notable step-up from some of Sandler's recent efforts. The cast were great, and the set pieces were pretty impressive. I laughed on more than a few occasions (the baseball scene and the bank-robbing montage in particular) and I really don't see why everybody thinks it's so racist. Sure, there were a few scenes that might seem kind of offensive, but overall, there wasn't anything as racist as Rob Schneider pretending to be a Native American in "Bedtime Stories". Some of the jokes were a bit gross, but there were still more laughs than the average Sandler flick. So overall, The Ridiculous 6 isn't for everyone, but it's still a fun movie, and one of the better recent Happy Madison films. Just lighten up and enjoy.
May 23, 2016
Godzilla3
May 23, 2016
When I go to see a movie called Godzilla I want it to feature the military scrambling to combat a giant monster named Godzilla, NOT a stupid special-effects heavy, poorly acted piece of !?€**. Godzilla is only in the movie for about eleven minutes, which wouldn't be as much of a problem if the human characters were interesting. Sadly, the only human character I cared about was Bryan Cranston, who dies about half an hour into the movie, leaving us with his bland, much less interesting son, who has little to no personality or charisma. Then, just as it seems we are finally about to get the rampaging monster action that the whole movie has been building up to, they ruin it by shrouding all the action in near-total darkness and throwing in two extra monsters that are in the movie more than Godzilla himself. Overall, this movie is a mess. It's full of tension-building without payoff, and spends about 17 minutes of its run time focusing on the main character trying to save a child who has no purpose in the plot. If you want a good creature-feature, I'd recommend Cloverfield or The Beast From 20000 Fathoms.
May 23, 2016
Paul Blart: Mall Cop7
May 23, 2016
Paul Blart: Mall Cop may not be the most sophisticated comedy in the world, but it's a decent action-comedy, and certainly better than its title may suggest. It makes the most out of a simple premise with some funny slapstick and a likeable performance from Kevin James. There are a few groaners in the script, but also quite a few laughs. Bottom line: If you can't stand fat jokes, then this isn't for you. But if you like a good, dumb slapstick comedy, then Paul Blart: Mall Cop is worth a look. 7/10.

The Jungle Book8
May 14, 2016
It may not be as good as the classic original, but The Jungle Book has more than enough charm and emotional depth to stand on its own terms. The only real major flaw is the singing, which sounded pretty lame compared to the singing in the original. Other than that, I enjoyed it very much. The voice cast fitted their roles perfectly, and Neel Sethi carried himself admireably, considering he was acting against green-screen the whole time. The film does manage to improve on the original in terms of narrative coherence, and adds an extra dimension to the character of Mowgli. Some scenes might be a bit frightening for very small kids, but there's still plenty for them to enjoy. Overall, The Jungle Book is a visually stunning and narratively engrossing remake that does justice to its classic predecessor.

Captain America: Civil War8
May 8, 2016
Captain America: Civil War is not only the finest instalment in the Captain America trilogy, it's also one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date. It delivers all the thrilling action and humour we have come to expect from Marvel, while also showing us more human sides of the characters, showing that even popcorn flicks can be smart and mature. The film's only true shortcoming is the villain. He was a good villain in the comics, but here, he's just another one-dimensional MCU villain who can't reach the heights of Loki or Thanos. However, the movie makes up for this with the best on-screen depiction of Spider-Man since Tobey Maguire. Tom Holland's portrayal of the popular character is both funny and endearing, making me even more excited for his upcoming solo movie. In short, Captain America: Civil War is a smart, thrilling and overall satisfying superhero film, and one of the best MCU films.

Miles Ahead8
Apr 27, 2016
Miles Ahead is a stylish, honourable tribute to a Jazz legend that's as intriguing and unpredictable as its subject's own compositions. Don Cheadle was outstanding. He genuinely looked and sounded exactly like the real Miles Davis. If he isn't nominated for an Oscar next year, I'll be shocked. Going in, I was a bit nervous about the fictionalised frame story (which has Davis searching for a stolen tape that was stolen from him by a shifty record producer) but even that didn't bother me at all. FINAL VERDICT: Miles Ahead is a worthy biopic of an influential Jazz pioneer, with Don Cheadle in fine form. Reccomended for fans of Davis and Cheadle.
Apr 27, 2016
Barton Fink9
Apr 27, 2016
Barton Fink is a smart, darkly comical satire with loads of memorable quotes and fine performances. John Turturro gives an effective lead performance, while John Goodman gives one of the best performances of his career (it's a mystery as to why he didn't get an Oscar nomination) and Michael Lerner steals every scene he's in. The movie's only flaw is its unsatisfying final quarter, where it raises a lot of questions but fails to provide a satisfactory answer for them. Still, the rest of the movie is great, with superb production values and a brilliantly satirical (yet truthful) portrayal of Hollywood and writer's block. Overall, Barton Fink is a triumph for the Coen Brothers and one of the best movies about Hollywood ever made. 9/10.

Alien9
Apr 27, 2016
Ridley Scott's "Alien" is a suspenseful, thrilling, and terrifically acted sci-fi classic. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through, and there were plot twists that I never saw coming. Ripley is a great character, and one of the best movie heroines of all time. The special effects are still pretty impressive for 1979, and the plot's slow-building tension keeps your heart pounding the whole time. In short, "Alien" is a very important film in cinema history and one of the best sci-fi films ever made.

Billy Madison7
Apr 27, 2016
Billy Madison is no masterpiece, but it's an enjoyable film all the same, and certainly better than the average Adam Sandler comedy. Some may find it too childish and silly, but if you enjoy wacky comedies, then you'll find plenty of inspired silliness here. Sandler's performance as the titular man-child produces quite a few chuckles, and injects the film with some manic energy. Overall, Billy Madison won't win over those who don't like this kind of silly comedy, but it's an entertaining parade of wackiness that provides some good chuckles.

Idiocracy7
Apr 27, 2016
Idiocracy is a fun satire that makes the most out of its amusing premise. A few of the jokes fell flat, but on the whole, there were plenty of laughs to be had. The cast were great, particularly Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph and Dax Shepard. At first glance, it may appear to be nothing more than a parade of low-brow gags, but it actually makes some smart jokes about the direction that humanity is heading in, delivering all the social satire that director Mike Judge has become known for. Overall, Idiocracy is an entertaining social commentary that's already on its way to becoming a reality. Fun movie.

Bill8

The comic minds behind "Horrible Histories" have made the jump to the big screen, and the result is a delightfully wacky comedy with Monty Pythonesque humour and surprising charm. The jokes keep on coming, and while a couple of them fall a bit flat, the majority of them produce big laughs. The cast were great, particularly Simon Farmaby and Matthew Baynton. Damien Llewis' cameo was also pretty funny. Just so you know, there are more innuendos than in "Horrible Histories" (including one brief reference to prostitution) but most of them will go over kids' heads. In short, "Bill" is a very enjoyable comedy recommended for fans of British comedy. I hope this team of comedians make more films in the future. 8/10.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail8
Apr 12, 2016
In 1975, Monty Python released their first feature film, and comedy was never the same again. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the silliest and funniest comedies I have ever seen. It takes wackiness to new heights with hilarious results. Almost every scene is comedy gold, with inspired silliness and tons of wit. If you like murderous rabbits, Knights who say "ni" and antagonistic French Knights, then this is the film for you. If you don't like madcap comedies, then this definitely isn't you're type of movie. Overall, a hilarious film from one of the most gifted comedy groups of all time.
