Mr. Howey is rather colorless, but his lack of palette serves his co-star well: Ms. Gonzaga ("She-Hulk: Attorney at Law") is the spark that lights up "True Lies," which is a pretty funny show when not trying to dazzle us with car chases, gunfights and displays of computer graphics that are probably gibberish.

“True Lies” has the potential to fulfill that fundamental mission, but it still has a way to go before justifying its existence.

The pilot episode for True Lies gave me a great look at the direction and what I can hope to expect for this first season. The vibe felt familiar but had a faster pace telling Harry and Hellen's story when compared to the movie. It will come down to a matter of preference, but (for me), I like that the showrunners are not wasting time stretching the story out with multiple lies and cover-ups between husband and wife, which is fine for a drama but often feels slow and disruptive when watching an action-adventure series. But no worries, because with two kids in the dark, there will definitely be more lies and cover-ups. It was also a great choice to start Hellen off with a set of skills and throw her into the action early. I hope this means that while the show continues to pay its respect to the film, we will get more of a what happened next in Harry and Hellen's life as married spies. The atmosphere of the pilot episode is upbeat, and five minutes in, we get action and gadgets. Yes! And keep it moving like this, please! We don't get a deep dive into each character on Harry's team, but I still enjoyed the little I did see of the ensemble. It's perfect for (flexible) fans who wanted a sequel to the movie or for anyone who loved shows like Mission Impossible, The A-Team, and Burn Notice. I usually don't enjoy pilot episodes, but was honestly entertained by this first episode. I'm interested in the possible backstories we may get from the other characters and look forward to seeing how Harry and Hellen's working relationship develops. As always, you made it this far, thank you for reading, and if you watch this series, or have recommendations, let me know your thoughts. Keep It Interesting Stay Channel Surfing! Damian

In other words, it’s fine — but there’s nothing new. If that’s the kind of show you’re looking for, then you’ll want to tune in. ... But if you’re expecting a deeper story, ongoing tension or layered characters, you may want to keep flipping.

True Lies just falls flat in carving out its own identity. ... If the latest network iteration proves anything with its string of campiness and light laughs, it's that some stories should stay on the big screen.

While we’re hoping that the TV version of True Lies gets better as it concentrates on the chemistry between Howey and Gonzaga, the rest of the show feels like an artifact from another age of network dramas, and not in a fun, Poker Face kind of way.

[True Lies] takes the 1994 action comedy, strips it for parts, and tries to sell you on a hollow, meaningless shell.

There’s no fun, no thrills, and no sex. Hell, there are barely any lies! What we’re subjected to instead is a criminally wooden, algorithmic remake without a single original idea to prop itself up.

Ouch...this was very bad...almost to the point of embarrassment. Poorly written, and the acting is stale. Pass
