It’s a clever hook, and the film milks it for some genuinely inventive, well-executed set pieces. As a delivery system for imaginative deaths, Whistle does its job with a certain professional pride.

Even though 'Whistle' offers nothing new to the supernatural death curse genre, it’s directed by Corin Hardy, and Corin Hardy likes to go hog wild.

"Whistle" is a fun brutal teenage horror flick, delivering a nostalgic feel with modern sensibilities. Director Corin Hardy spins his gothic web of influences into a slightly more young adult realm with brilliant performances by Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse and the supporting cast.

The Whistle (15) is a teen horror. The trailer said it was from the people who bought you The Monkey so you know a little of what to expect. After the scene setting opening with basketball star Mason, we move on to the main protagonist, Chrysanthemum "Chrys" (Dafne Keen) an older teen who has relocated to live with her cousin Rel (Sky Yang). Her first day at high school doesn't go so well and she, Rel, his friend Ellie (Sophie Nélisse), Grace (Ali Skovbye), his crush and her boyfriend Dean (Jhaleil Swaby) end up in detention with teacher Mr Craven (Nick Frost). Something falls out of Chrys' bag that attracts his interest and sets this ersatz Breakfast Club on a road that should not have been taken. From hereon in things start to happen and not in a good way. Can these teens find a way to prevent the supernatural intervening in their young lives, potentially forever? Mason's mother (Michelle Fairley) collector of memento mori may have some clues that will help them. If you liked The Monkey you will probably enjoy this. Although not as intense and complicated, it has some genuinely scary moments. There is a love story thrown in which become integral to the plot. The film is too linear to really shock you and part way through I gained an inkling into how it was likely to end, so perhaps a little too formulaic, with not enough twists, though plenty of jump moments and gore. A good performance from the cast and overall you are concerned about their fate and do root for them, well, some of them. Not as good as The Monkey but still worth seeing if you like this type of horror.

It’s the same thrill as the Final Destination movies, which Egerton and Hardy have both noted as an influence: watching likable protagonists try and sometimes fail to evade death.

It may come dressed in borrowed robes, but this is a no-holds-barred horror with real bite — and surely the start of a new franchise.

British director Hardy has far more fun here than he did with 2018’s mechanical franchise entry The Nun.

There was room to do something ridiculous here – it bears repeating: this is a film about a killer whistle. Why is it taking itself so seriously?

This might have been a better movie if its creators embraced their fitful bloodthirst. Instead, they seem to hope that you like these stock characters enough that you’ll gasp when their friends and enemies inevitably bite the dust. A machine to kill vague people, “Whistle” never delivers on its frightful promise.

Whistle (2025) The Cursed Whistle (12,415 – 27 Apr 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) The outcast Chrys Willet (Dafne Keen) moves from Chicago to a small town after the death of her father. She joins the Pellington High School, where her cousin Rel Taylor (Sky Yang) studies. Chrys “inherits” the locker of Mason “Horse” Raymore (Stephen Kalyn), who mysteriously died completely burnt while in the shower after a game. She befriends the lesbian Ellie Gains (Sophie Nélisse), who works in a hospital; Grace Browning (Ali Skovbye), who is Rel’s crush and the girlfriend of the basketball player Dean Jackson (Jhaleil Swaby). She finds a weird artifact inside the locker and her teacher Mr. Craven (Nick Frost) takes the relic from her and researches the expensive price on the Internet. While leaving the school, Rel notes that forgot his comics in the classroom and steals the whistle from Mr. Craven. Further Rel warns Chrys that the “pastor” Noah Haggerty (Percy Hynes White) she met in the parking slot is a drug dealer. They go to Grace’s house and she blows the whistle. Soon they learn that Mr. Craven died, and Chrys and Ellie decide to give the artifact back to Horse’s mother, Ms. Ivy Raymore (Michelle Fairley). She does not accept and tells them that the whistle calls death for the listeners, and their death is anticipated. Now they research how the group may be saved from the curse. “Whistle” (2025) is a teen horror movie with a non-original story in the line of “Final Destination” and “Smile”. There is an unnecessary lesbian romance, but the deaths are original and the performances are good. There is a must-see scene in the middle of the credits. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): “O Som da Morte” (“The Sound of Death”) My Blog: ****/

Whistle was decent, but it didn’t quite reach its full **** gore was acceptable, though I expected more—especially for a 2025 release, where audiences have come to anticipate elevated intensity and creativity in **** plot felt somewhat conventional, centering on the familiar trope of an ancient artifact. While it followed a predictable structure, the execution kept it moderately **** ending, however, made the journey worthwhile and delivered a satisfying conclusion.Overall, if you’re looking for something new to watch, I would still recommend giving it a chance.

Looked promising, but it was mostly boring. Had a couple cool deaths, but the rest were lame. I don't think Dafne Keen is a good actress, at least not in this film. Not even lesbians could save it. Give it a pass unless you're really bored or into films about haunted/cursed objects.

I kinda feel bad giving this film such a low rating, but the script was so inconsistent, it became aggravating. The story didn’t seem to know what direction it was going, leaving every scene feeling incomplete and unfinished. Then it started getting all Woke and politically correct by throwing in this stupid lesbian romantic love story, and that was another unfortunate direction that the script took, once again wandering away from what would have otherwise been a great picture. The right ingredients were there, but I’m wondering if the oven was preheated?..

Uninspired horror filmmaking. The scares are nonexistent. For some reason this death demon likes to take its time on some of the characters and seems more focused on hiding and jump scares than doing its actual job.
