As a satire, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has not really anything new to offer and is too superficial to really send a message about the Afghanistan conflict and war journalism. As a comedy it is somewhat meddling with a few good chuckles. The end result is mildly entertaining, but nothing more.

To write a comedy about a woman's self discovery in the middle of a war zone is risky business and on the whole they do a very good job.

The movie benefits from good performances between Martin Freeman and Tina Fey. The movie had a interesting story but never really takes really big risks. Also the movie had some laugh out loud moments too. I also wish they would of used Margot Robbie a bit more too. Maybe for the lead role. But overall decent enough

Tina Fey was adequate and even likeable in this deeply offensive movie. The war in Afghanistan re-imagined as a light entertainment with some blood for "serious credentials". Ugh.

It was less of a comedy than I expected, but also a very interesting look at the state of the American presence in Afghanistan. It points out that perhaps more attention should be paid to what is happening there now.

It was quite funny at moments, but not as funny as I hoped and the story itself wasn't that interesting - it basically sold itself on it being based on real events and tried to show it all in a funny way even though I think if you want to base something on real events here (haven't read up on it, so not sure how much is on real events there), you should make a serious movie about Afghanistan rather than this somewhere inbetween type of a movie. Plus I didn't get the point of much of the story really.

I expected a comedy and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was certainly not that. The first half of the film attempted to be a comedy, but largely failed. It does not find its stride until the second half when it focuses on the serious effects of war on war reporters who are always risking their lives for the sake of a story. Here, the film is very dramatic and serious, yet works really well. I am not convinced it works too well with the first half of the film, but it really hits hard at times when you see the risks these people take for their craft. Tina Fey is very good here, as is Martin Freeman. The two of them have terrific chemistry and really draw you into the film. Additionally, the film is very much enjoyable. Even in the weaker first half, there are some very funny one-liners at times and then the serious take of the second half may be darker, but still has good takes on a middle aged woman trying to find herself in Kabul and in life. Plus, Fey is so charismatic, she remains endlessly watchable. Unfortunately, the film does have many faults. It is not as funny as it should be and it tries to tackle too much in a limited time when it comes to the issues it raises. Additionally, it is pretty typical and hits all the notes of the middle aged person who is lost attempts to find themselves and meets weird people along the way narrative. That said, I did enjoy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Somehow sweetly nostalgic with incredibly enjoyable characters, the film is very palatable and enjoyable, even if it is not always easy to watch due to its subject matter.

Journalism in the war zone, but very funny! The first impression was the reaction to the title abbreviation, and then I thought I saw Jody Foster on the poster, but surprised to find Tina Fey in the trailer. It is a great war-drama, filled with lots of fun and hard to believe it is a biography. This should be the best film for these directors till date. Amazing cast, but Tina Fey totally cracked it. This is one of the best films of the 2016. I have seen many Afghan war based films, but not quite fun as this one. It gives you a completely different take on the war torn Afghan. It was the story of an American journalist Kim, who was sent to their for the latest coverage. At first she struggles with the new place, then makes a few friends and finds comfortable despite security threat. The rest of the film reveals how her life, as well as career transforms with the experience of working in the dangerous environment. Apart from starring in it, Tina Fey produced it and this is her best film in the recent years. The first half was wonderful, then during in the middle I felt it lost its track, but it came back strongly to end. This tale focused mainly on the living-style of the reports in the hostile place, besides their tough jobs. The battle scenes were minimised and highlighted the journalism. So don't expect it to be another 'A Thousands Times Good Night', it is refreshing though. It is a well worth, so don't miss it! 8/10

It was kind of a hard movie for me to get into at first, but as it progressed I found that it really grew on me. It tries too hard with it's humor early on. It starter gags are just too immature. The strength of the movie doesn't come in until it tones down the humor and begins to focus on the relationships and growth of Tina Fey's character. It's your standard tale about a person who finally does something new and crazy in their life and ends up finding out who they are along the way. As a result it is predictable. However the movie has a fantastic cast lead by Tina Fey, who gives an excellent performance. Of course it also helps that the setting allows for interesting and dangerous situations to arise. It's true that Afghanistan ends up being one of the movie's greatest strengths. I was surprised to find that for a comedy it isn't afraid to get gritty. There are violent and gory depictions of warfare I wasn't expecting. It really helps to add a tone of realism to the film. It's also allows them to touch on other compelling themes about the political climate and culture of the area. Before I go any further I have to criticize the movie's soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, these are good songs. The problem is they are used completely in the wrong areas and often clash gaudily with the tone of the movie as well as the events they are being played over. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot goes to loud with it's humor in the beginning. It's not until it starts to get more subtle with it's jokes that the laughs start coming. Despite the familiarity of it's plot setup, the drama is still compelling thanks to a strong cast and a wonderful performance from Tina Fey. Of course it's setting is also a pretty strong point. It adds an extra serious edge with it's war angle. For all of it's political hot topics on display, it's real themes and messages are centered around feminism. It's a nice display of the strength women possess. It might not be the funniest or most original movies out there, but it manages to add a few nice spins to the standard story setup it uses. All in all it's far fro perfect, but still offers quite a few reasons to give it a shot. It's opening stretch left me thinking I wasn't going to like it, but once it got going and found it's focus it pulled me into a surprisingly likable film. One carried by the talent of Tina Fey.

This film suffers from a split personality. The first half is more of a comedy that looks more into peoples sex lives than the actual embed. The second half is more serious that looks at the changing news business and what's most important. Overall good performances and a well made film can't make up for an all over the map script. C+

Excellent movie. No it,s not trying to be another Mash. It's a unique movie with tremendous acting and relevance to the mess we find ourselves in today...

Based on a true story, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and unique film, which chronicles the experiences of reporting from a war zone in a clever, insightful, and occasionally funny way. Fey is exceptional, and the performances are fantastic. The script is excellent, and the soundtrack is awesome. The pacing could have been a little faster, but it doesn't drag, and the cinematography is solid. The storyline is engaging and offers us a more nuanced commentary on the conflict in Afghanistan than other recent films, whilst avoiding cliches and sentimental 'Murica tropes, instead exploring a realistic and unabashed commentary on being a female correspondent in an exceptionallly hostile setting. Well worth your time. 8.77/10

One of the smartest films of the year. It spells out "Quagmire." It's also the only film in which endorphins and the hippocampus are linked to the British19thC occupation of Aphganistan.

Who knew Tina Fey was a serious actor? She was able to play it straight but retain her Tina Fey-ness and sense of comedic timing. The story wasn't overly political and preachy which is refreshing from Hollywood especially as it pertains to to modern war dramas. I enjoyed it.

I was really excited to see Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, but this film is a serious disappointment. It's boring, long, and it is really hard to be entertained by this film.

Boring movie. I actually found myself falling asleep. We all know what happened during the Afghan/Iraq so called war. What we didn't know was Whiskey Tango Foxtrot long for WTF is just that a movie that will have you asking just that. So stupid and pointless.

Four ladies went to see this movie and four ladies loved it. Based on a book written by Kim Baker about her adventures as a totally green rookie war correspondent when she left home for Afghanistan in 2003. Her first night in country as she lays her head on a strange pillow in a strange land, you can see she is thinking, "What the hell am I doing here?" With an excellent supporting cast, our fearless correspondent becomes more confident as she learns the ropes and her way around a culture so different from her own. It is not supposed to be a comedy, but there is lots of humor in this movie. We laughed out loud often. It was very enjoyable and entertaining.

The third act turned this into a Sandra Bullock movie, but I was enjoying it very much until that point. No surprises, but seemed like a very accurate and necessary representation of a "forgotten war".

With Tina Fey starring (and judging from the promos) you'd expect this to be a rollicking war comedy. Fey does land a few humorous asides, but they quickly give way to the more serious experiences of a woman reporter in the war zones of Afghanistan and Pakistan (based on Kim Barker's book). She experiences beginner's confusion, sexual politics, tragic events and career frustration. Unfortunately, while Fey has a charming personality, she doesn't mine the dramatic depths of her character's journey. Even thought it's sometimes predictable and been done better before, the movie tells an interesting story about a journalist's life in a war zone. (If you haven't figured it out, the title spelled in phonetic alphabet is WTF.)

It was between a 6 and a 7 for me. There were some parts I kinda disliked and there were some parts I liked. I love Tina Fey as a person and actor because I know she can pull off some good comedy laughs. I will say this, if you like Tina Fey, you will kinda like this. It has its moments.

It's better than I thought it would be, but still a bit too lightweight on all fronts - sort of like Good Morning Vietnam. You never really felt like the main characters were in jeopardy in any of it. But it really does touch on some critical themes while keeping it fun and flowing. It actually got a round of applause at my theater.

Storyline's going to keep anyone intelligent enough bored making them fall asleep after 30 minutes of movie time. What Whiskey Tango Foxtrot keeps doing what several other movies being released today (except a few) is promising us to love it.
