I personally deem this movie flawless. The acting, story, cinematography, plot, everything about it is Invigorating. Terrence Fletcher, (J.K Simmons) the main antagonist, I find quite reasonable and interesting in a strange manner. Though his points are logistical, I think his faults arise from his tensity and temper.

Whiplash is such a special movie in my heart. The movie represents so much more than being a drummer on a band playing sheet music. This movie is one of the greatest examples of achieving greatness. Overall: 10/10

Whiplash touches upon the inherent drive for greatness that many creatives experience and its follies when those desires are abused and pushed to their limit. Showcasing a journey that’s disgusting and hard to look away from, as the protagonist’s dreams, background, and insecurities are used against him until he is completely unraveled. This is supplemented by an outstanding performance of music, acting, and cinematography that makes this film a masterwork in depicting the darker side of creative **** film follows Andrew, a first-year student at one of the best music schools in the nation, following his dream to become a drummer who is seen as “one of the greats”. His family doesn’t ‌understand him and he doesn’t have any friends, but despite this he continues to pursue his love of drumming. While practicing, he catches the eye of Fletcher, the instructor of a highly respected jazz conservatory, and adds Andrew as the newest and youngest drummer to the band. During this, Andrew is shown that Fletcher will do whatever it takes to produce only the greatest musicians for his band. Whether that’s through manipulation, insults, or physical harm, no action is deemed ‌too excessive for Fletcher. As the end result of producing an artist capable of shaking the creative world justifies the means. This process ultimately destroys Fletcher both physically, mentally, and socially, as his life is dismantled in order to accommodate his desire to win Fletcher’s **** a creative myself, watching this film is like looking at a bloody but enticing car crash. That feeling of wanting one’s artistic pursuit to be commended is hung like a carrot on a stick over Andrew’s head throughout. What Andrew is willing to do to obtain that validation is strikingly relatable to someone who has put blood, sweat, and tears into their own creative endeavors. This is only strengthened by the captivating cinematography and acting performances that filled my stomach with dread throughout. The shots of Andrew’s blood and sweat dripping onto the drums and the close-up shots of Fletcher’s face and expressions really stand out as unforgettable moments within the cinematography, as it pushes the viewer's eyes unpleasantly close to the abuse that is happening. The pacing overall also felt fantastic, as these intense scenes are punctuated by the musical performances of Andrew’s drumming and Fletcher’s band. Allowing the pacing time to breathe in between the scenes while simultaneously creating an ongoing suspense as the viewer never knows when Fletcher will stop the performance abruptly to berate and calibrate his band to perfection. What really pulls these elements together is the overall messaging and bittersweet ending of the film. Whiplash challenges viewers, making them question how great artists are created and if suffering is truly necessary for greatness. Throughout the film, Andrew’s torment and relentless dedication appear to move him closer to his goal. However, this torment destroys him in the end, and right when it seems the film will take the stance that suffering is unnecessary for greatness, its ending leaves the question far more ambiguous. As the final moments force the audience to watch the culmination of Andrew and Fletcher’s efforts finally pay off but at what cost?Overall, Whiplash is essential viewing for anyone pursuing a creative pursuit or curious about the darker side of striving for greatness within the arts. The film fundamentally understands how that desire for greatness unwinds and hurts individuals and the people around them. Truly a 10/10 unforgettable film that will leave audiences shocked for years to come.

Andrew played in front of the drums Fletcher but fletcher ridiculed his drum skill. Scouting andrew into his band Fletcher oppressed him. Andrew who was oppress by fletcher made effort by burning himself out. Andrew sucessfully finished music contest in place of tanner who lost his score. After music contest, Andrew rose his band's main drummer. Andrew who was deprived main drummer position, broke up girlfriend and concentrated practice. Andrew had a traffic accident in the contest day, but he tryed playing drummer, failed. he attacked Fletcher. Andrew that was expelled the school, testified his violence. He met again Fletcher that was fired the school and Fletcher recruited him the new band. The performance day, Fletcher make perform andrew untold misic, but Andrew was swayed Fletcher through playing drum. Even if his student's talent was developed by fletcher's training, it is **** if student dies. In the movie, fletcher's student committed suicide on account of his training. Of course, geniuses who die young leave fames. However when we see they, we have to realize whether we only see their achievements or see their sad death without their achievements. When fletcher makes just one student to practice, it shows that he doesn't love music, he just wanted to harass his student. In music, especially jazz, harmony important but he doesn't hear harmony If he really loved music, he wouldn't concentrate on only beat The reason he kept talking about charlie parker, is just to pressure the students, not take care of the students. If he took care of the students, he woulden't ruin performance of contest in the latter part.

"Whiplash" is the powerful and intense portrayal of pressure and perfectionism from debut filmmaker, Damien Chazelle, whose film marks what may be the most exciting debut feature years. There is phenomenal filmmaking on display, as well as phenomenal acting from J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller. A drum solo might not ever be so tense or intimate on film again. Chazelle who made a small independent student film about a jazz couple called "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench" explores ideas of characters struggling through creativity. Chazelle's greatest talent may be in creating extremely tight and hypnotic scenes out of very little story. Sequences of pure drumming or of bands playing turns into something entirely different, much more personal, and spellbindingly close. He uses a shallow focus lens and a variety of shots including extreme close-ups that channel through masterfully structured editing to create scenes of pure tension that transcend the pages. Even in sequences of mostly dialogue, many of the same techniques are used that work in getting the audience lost in the moment with the excellent writing and delivery from the actors. It's an extremely absorbing watch. J.K. Simmons may have the best supporting performance of the year. He's instantly unrecognizable from the very first scene. He understands himself and how to manipulate and test those around him by putting on a persona, yet appears so inhumanly unsympathetic at times. And when he gets pissed he's ferocious, sometimes even hilarious. Miles Teller just about matches Simmons, proving once again to be a master of subtlety and realism, creating a character who wants nothing but to be great. Both actors give their characters such humanity, and yet have serious detachment from others. They are given plenty of moments to develop so that we see all sides of their selves until they become so real that they might be like people we know in some way or another. What they create when they're both together on screen, the looks they give each other, show the serious conflict between them, but at times reveal what it is they share. What makes "Whiplash" great is that it's not a movie about art or consequences, or about people who learn something. It's about Neyman and Fletcher the way that they are, the nature of their beings. We see that sometimes people don't get lessons, they just do what they feel is their nature to do, to succeed at whatever price. It's a feverish experience.

Whiplash is a meticulously crafted film that blends a fresh, original script with stunning direction and editing to create a tension-filled cinematic experience. Every scene is thoughtfully composed, with each creative choice supporting the emotional depth of the **** opening shot of Andrew playing the drums from a distance sets the tone for his journey. The isolation in this shot foreshadows the personal sacrifices he will make to achieve greatness. His relationship with Nicole, shown in a carefully balanced scene, is the first casualty of his ambition, with the composition reflecting their emotional connection before it **** breakup scene shifts from intimate framing to a more disjointed composition, symbolizing the growing emotional distance between Andrew and Nicole. Similarly, a key moment of Andrew’s loneliness occurs when he waits alone in the dark for a 6 a.m. rehearsal that doesn’t start until 9 a.m. The contrast of light and shadow conveys his isolation and internal conflict.Fletcher’s military-like teaching methods are reflected in the students’ disciplined posture before their performance, creating a sense of tension and unease. The diagonal framing heightens this feeling, emphasizing the pressure Andrew **** sum, Whiplash is a masterclass in visual storytelling. Chazelle’s direction and the cast's performances make this an intense, unforgettable exploration of the cost of ambition.

虽然和《La La Land》的故事八竿子打不到一起,但却莫名有种姊妹篇的感觉,达米恩导演真是爱爵士爱得深沉。JK Simmons看来是在纽约混不下去跑LA开餐厅去了。

Wow, what an amazing movie. The whole thing was just incredible. I loved the characters and the end was fantastic. J.K. Simmons blew me away with how good of a character Mr. Fletcher was. Andrew's journey of hardship was truly inspiring and impactful. 10/10.

Despite stretching credibility when it comes to the level of abuse a teacher could get away with directing at his students, Whiplash is still a largely effective drama.

Incredible. I may be slightly biased because I am a drummer, but I believe this is one of the best movies ever written—the camera work, the colors, the message, the writing, and the acting, are all incredible. Damien Chazelle is crazy for this one.

Ah, "Whiplash," a cinematic masterpiece that dances on the precipice of artistic brilliance and the relentless pursuit of perfection. Much like the turbulent tempos of its jazz-infused soundtrack, this film catapults the audience into the cutthroat world of music education, leaving them emotionally bruised and exhilarated.Damien Chazelle, the conductor of this chaotic symphony, deserves applause for crafting a narrative that transcends the mere confines of a music school drama. J.K. Simmons delivers a tour de force performance as Terence Fletcher, a maestro of emotional manipulation and sadistic pedagogy. His relentless pursuit of excellence borders on the sadomasochistic, making you question whether you're witnessing a music class or a psychological **** protagonist, Andrew Neiman, played with both vulnerability and determination by Miles Teller, is a symphony of ambition and self-destruction. The film masterfully explores the thin line between mentorship and abuse, leaving you questioning the cost of **** cinematography, reminiscent of a frenetic drum solo, captures the intensity of each scene. The use of shadows and close-ups reflects the inner turmoil of the characters, creating a visual crescendo that parallels the musical **** the credits roll, you're left contemplating the blurred boundaries between passion and obsession, genius and madness. "Whiplash" is not just a film; it's a visceral experience that resonates long after the final note. In a world where mediocrity often takes center stage, this cinematic gem serves as a relentless reminder that true artistry demands sacrifice, sometimes at the expense of one's sanity. Bravo, Chazelle, for orchestrating a symphony of brilliance and madness that strikes a dissonant chord in the symphony of life.

Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons are a perfect choice for casting as their raw performance blends in with Chazelle's masterful storytelling like blood and water. Iconic performances throughout, needless to say another amazing score reflecting Simonec and Hurwitz's work.

This has been an exquisite experience that was done in one of the highest calibers of acting that I have ever seen on screen. The sheer pressure given by Simmons and his outbursts made me actually more frightened than any horror movie I have ever watched. The music was wicked and by the last 15 minutes of the movie I was standing and jamming like I was on the stage. Give this masterpiece a watch especially if you are a fan of Jazz.

J.K. Simmons is 10/10 in the Fletcher role, Miles Teller is also good. The music is awesome. The story is extremely simple and seems to me very detached from what a music school/career probably is, this is more like one of those "we must make it to the end" sport movies. But the formula works and it's full of small twist that keep you interested.

Outstanding from front to back. And we're not even die-hard jazz fans. Excellent performance from Miles Teller (Andrew) and J.K. Simmons (Terence Fletcher). Their individual roles couldn't exist with the complementarity of the other. This feature is so poetic, so filled with both fast-paced musical action and floating moments of eloquent silence. The plot is kind of simple but is brought in a particular way which keeps us on our toes. The pace of events is a bit jerky especially during the last quarter of the movie but it paradoxically compiles the most precious gems of it. No spoil but the last scene is an unavoidable masterpiece. I would say the success of 'Whiplash' especially reside in the way it managed to popularise very theoritical concepts and moves. Despite all that, some subplots as social relations and Andrew's dad presence should have been more investigated in my opinion. Even if not exploring them also makes Andrew's choices more touching and engaging. Definitely deserves its 'Metacritic Must See' label.

One of the main themes of this movie is Greatness/Perfectionism. As someone who is very critical of movies, I always find myself thinking "yeah, this movie is **** it's not GREAT." Normally, if a movie is great, there will be at least one scene that changes my mind. This scene has about 5 of them. And they aren't subtle either, they jump off the screen and make your jaw drop! One of the best movies of the past decade for sure.

I never understood all the enthusiasm for this film that didn't convince me at all instead. Jazz is not that, it is not a war. The script is overflowing, excessive and it all ends up looking ridiculously overloaded. JK Simmons' character looks like Sergeant Hartman, but you are not in Vietnam here, but in a jazz school. Jazz doesn't make your hands bleed when you play drums, this is not the real impact of music in people's life . Chazelle's directing didn't convince me at all.
