Brilliant. I had been avoiding watching this movie because the premise didn't interest me much, however I decided to give it a chance, and boy I'm glad I did. You don't actually cheer for any of the characters which is a bit of a negative point, but I was completely invested in the story. The ending caugth me by surprise and I loved it.

An average film with lots of signposting of the ending. The acting is average throughout due to some very dodgy accents, despite the actors being decent normally! The direction is also slow and quite boring. Whilst not bad, I wouldn't bother watching it again!

masterpiece, one of the best movies ever, nolan best beside memento, you wont be dissapointed watching this movie

I actually have a media consumption burnout; I did not enjoy watching shows or playing games because of my personal responsibilities, but as a result I went through this show with no expectation, and it hit me like crazy. Christopher Nolan, perhaps I underestimate him. I thought he was like other directors but with more artistic flair, but no, he's great; he knows what he's doing. I would like to start with the theme of this show for me, which is obsession – obsession with getting better, beating one another and obsession with the craft. We can truly see the character change for the worse and become different because of the obsession. It starts with revenge but later becomes an obsession, one beating another. Some might argue that Borden didn't do it on purpose, but it still affects Angler negatively. The arrangement of this movie, I wouldn't say 'genius' but 'creative'; the fact it was split to different parts but still arranged in a way that makes sense is fantastic. At first I thought it was the past and the future, but in the middle of the film I realised it was three parts, and then I remembered the quote the old man said, which is magic has three parts, and that blew my mind. Crazy correlation, which brings me to the next part, the clue. This show from start to finish gives you a clue as to what the trick is in the film: the twin, duplication, prestige and secret. It was amazing watching this show and finally knowing the truth when it's actually right under your nose. The way they explore the transportation trick to the next level is grounded yet creative. Overall, this is a great movie with twists and truth; I enjoyed it.

Christopher Nolan's films are always so overwritten, non-linear, and busy. There is too much going on for me to involve myself enough to care. I feared there would be an unrealistic twist at the end (I was right). I also suspected some of the other strange happenings along the way (I was right about those, too). Nolan tries too hard, which makes his films unnecessarily stressful to watch.

Watched this movie last night and it was life changing. I had to pause it about 45 times to figure out what was going on though. It's still absolutely worth it.

Not sure what type of “critics” are rating this but this is Hugh Jackmans best movie and arguably Bales as well.

The story captures the attention from beginning to end, always maintaining an aura of mystery and hiding the truth until the end in an effective and unpredictable way, in full reference to the magic games that are the basis of the film

One of the most underrated movies ever! It's pure magic, litteraly. It explores numerous themes like competition, dedication, influence and much, much more. Non-linear narrative is a real work of art here.

Nolan always cooking on the technical and presentation side of things. I do wonder about the story here and if its interesting at all but its still so cool.

This film has some twists that took me completely by surprise. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman do a great job displaying their characters' animosity for each other.

The Prestige grasps and narrates what I want to see in a psychological genre as Christopher Nolan takes a lot of risks but revealing a lot of exciting tricks that a magician would never reveal.

An onstage tragedy begets a lifelong blood feud between two illusionists in Edwardian London. As the pair of tortured former apprentices take turns one-upping and/or sabotaging each other, stakes spiral out of control and doses of collateral damage are traded like chips at the poker table. There's always a new trick to master, metaphorical mountains to summit in the name of ultimate victory, and this duel of private obsession leaves no stone un-crushed. As they confound and confuse one another, so do they astonish and amaze the viewer; half the fun is in learning how each man achieves the impossible, then watching as their rival maliciously thwarts it before a paying audience. Magnetic costars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman really wore their working boots to this set, allowing their heavyweight personalities to smash and spark from the very first word. Their performances are boosted by a string of excellent supporting players. Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson make wonderful contributions, as always, but there's something extra-special about David Bowie, in a typically small, offbeat role, as the reclusive Russian genius Nikola Tesla. With the Nolan brothers working behind the camera, twists and turns are to be expected, and after setting the stage with a series of low-key appetizers in the early acts, they deliver a string of jumbo-sized whoppers during the climax. Expertly paced and brilliantly tailored to match the tempo and bravado of a world-class magic act, The Prestige is a high water mark in the writer/director duo's already-impressive filmography.

this movie is my sixth favorite film due to the ingenuis story told with nolans signifinifigantly great directing

Released in 2006, and currently on my Top 10 personal favorites list, The Prestige features some of the best modern actors and actresses to hit the silver screen. I will admit, I have seen this film quite a few times (I will tell you why later), and the more I watch this film the more I catch on to the little details. I mean (come on) this film has both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as the main characters. The best part is they go head-to-head against each other (I know what your thinking, this film has both Batman and Wolverine... mind blown). Let me explain, this film is based in the late 1890's (possibly early 1900's, I can never really tell) in London, England as two magicians struggle against each other to give their audiences "the greatest" magic trick in the world. These two magicians are locked in a fierce rivalry against each other to the point were it affects the people around them. Each moment when one magician thinks he has the upper hand the tables turn to leave that magician only empty handed. Of course, being that this film is a Christopher Nolan flick, a bigger plot emerges that eventually puts a stop to this epic rivalry. Besides the fact that this film is fun and interesting to watch, to understand this story completely you must watch this film again and again. This film is not The Matrix confusing, but in this film, every single detail is important to the story. It took me a few times to watch this film just to understand the ending. The performances of each of the actors and actresses is excellent, especially Christian Bale. This film must be one of his better films other than the Dark Knight series of course. This film also features several other familiar faces that the audience would appreciate. Not only does this film have the best actors in its corner, but a strong story line that carries this film all the way to the end. This film is one of best films about an individual's attempt to grasp the impossible and to stay ahead of his competition. The characters will soon discover that their pursuit for the impossible has taken them down a path that was unintended by each party. Whenever I get an opportunity, I always make time to watch this film at least once a year. Nowadays, it doesn't seem like many people watch or even talk about this film. Which is a shame because this film is a good film, even better than films I have seen this year. If this film is not a classic now it should be in the future. Personally, I could watch this film at any time in the day, and it will still be good. Anyway, if you love films with plot twists, drama, rivalry, intense moments, and mystery then you will love this film. In summary, this film is one of my personal favorites for a reason and that is because this film is the best. I recommend this film to anybody just looking for a solid film.

Significantly better upon second watch. I appreciated this movie much more this time.

The movie is an excellent cautionary tale that reminds me of a semi-famous warning by one of the Inklings (Tolkien or Lewis) that technology eventually becomes indistinguishable from magic. Both technology and magic often conceal a desire to dominate nature, history, and finally other people. Runs a little long but worth a viewing.

although the movie was good there were certain aspects that i didn't liked but overall very intersting movie with some twists here and there though not a big one but quite enjoyable

Maybe the most underrated movie of all time! Watch it as blind as possible, maybe I’m crazy but I see The prestige as one of the greatest movies of all time. With astounding use of setups and payoffs, it presents a interesting take on the standard “guy is consumed by his ambition” as seen in “the wolf of Wall Street”. great acting, And just to top it off, the most jaw dropping opening I’ve ever seen!

This film continues to astound me with its brilliance. It's done with exceptional dexterity. Every part of the film is great, from the graphics to the character development. I'm not sure how well it did in terms of accolades when it came out, but it should have piled up quite a number. The tale is richly layered, the acting is great, the direction is breathtaking, and so on. There isn't a single aspect of this picture that I would change. Congratulations to the whole team that worked on this project. It is one of the finest films of all time in my opinion. If you have the chance, I strongly advise you to see this film. You'll be pleased you did, I believe.

Warning: Spoilers As said in my review for his masterpiece 'Memento', Christopher Nolan has always struck me as a very talented film-maker, and most of his films are ones that have impressed me a lot. Even weaker efforts, where his ambition can get in the way, have a good deal to admire. His films are all impeccably crafted technically, and often entertaining and thought-provoking, also knowing how to get good performances out of talented casts. 'The Prestige' is not quite perfect, but is still very good and one of Nolan's better films. To me actually it was close to outstanding, which makes my issues with the denouement even more frustrating. And it is the denouement that's 'The Prestige's' biggest problem, being over-baked and with one twist too many, the second of which being a convoluted cop-out and like the other twists before the denouement didn't happen. Was also, to a lesser extent, expecting more from David Julyan's music score, having done such a great job with the score for 'Memento'. His score for 'The Prestige' works within the film and has a mystical and dread quality, but it is not one of those scores that is listenable or even re-listenable as music on its own, lacking the cleverness and mood and thematic complexities of his work for 'Memento' and being somewhat too simplistic to be entirely memorable. However, 'The Prestige' looks wonderful. The cinematography is slick and the production values in general are suitably gritty and audacious, complete with gorgeously evocative Victorian period production and costume design. Once again, Nolan directs impeccably, not letting his ambition get in the way of the storytelling, while the script is smart, thought-provoking and intricate without trying too hard and treating the audience with respect. The pacing is taut while deliberate, and while the film is long there is enough to keep one riveted. The story for 'The Prestige' is quite the fascinating tale, with an incredible period and darkly magical atmosphere and twists and turns peppered throughout but done in a way that the storytelling is coherent and taken with sincere seriousness while not coming across as emotionally cold. Fine acting all round, with a charmingly flamboyant Hugh Jackman and intensely charismatic Christian Bale perfectly cast and playing off against other wonderfully. Michael Caine brings class and dignity to his role, and seeing how he altered his voice and posture for it it was clear he was right in the zone. Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo and Scarlett Johansson also do well, as does surprisingly David Bowie in an unlikely role. Andy Serkis is similarly memorable. Overall, imperfect film but also a fascinating one, flaws and all it is for me one of Nolan's better films. 8/10 Bethany Cox.

A great movie. The only reason i'm reducing the score is because of the convoluted mixing of the timelines, the rather weak setting up of the conflict and the usage of sci fi / fantasy elements. I think this movie would have been far better if there were no sci fi / fantasy elemtents.

This is hands down Christopher and Jonathan Nolan's best written film. The characters, twists and meta-narrative make this a must-see experience to revisit and analyse.

This movie is Nolan's masterpiece alongside Memento, and the last great movie of his entire filmography. The plot is not simple, I will try to resume it : Two young apprentice wizards, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, are taught and tutored by Cutter, an illusionist engineer and former wizard, but during a number where a woman is tied up and placed in a glass case full of water, something goes wrong. and Angier will blame his friend for what happened, trying to take revenge. Thus begins a cruel game between the two men about who is the best and the rivalry will gradually turn into obsession. Here Nolan stages a great direction, with tight and precise camera movements, fantastic shots and also the script which is usually one of his weak points turns out to be solid. Fantastic Bowie in the role of Tesla, brilliant even to have thought so. From start to finish it all comes together.

great film, Non logical in some parts and the last twist didn't have enough hints to it.

The Prestige is my most favorite movie of Nolan. This movie is magic in itself. It has broken timelines which enhance the storytelling and it is done artistically. It was feeling like an ordinary movie until the major twist reveals. It's a masterful exercise in storytelling with superb direction and powerful performance. The character development was brilliant.

The Prestige is a complex maze filled with countless twists and turns. Fortunately, the entire crew masterfully guides us away from all its dead ends through its great storyline, deep characters and immersive acting to get into its satisfying conclusion.

The storyline, Character arcs and the sci-fi touch make it unique. Both Christian bale and Hugh Jackman gave their best performance, absolute masterclass by Nolan. One of best movies I ever saw.

A masterpiece, amazing story, amazing actors, your eyes will be in the screen every minute, amazing end

I just finished watching The Prestige on Amazon Prime. Recently I decided to take a look at all of Christopher Nolan's films. I have watched The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and Tenet; and now it was this film's turn. At first I was a bit skeptical of watching it because of how complicated Nolan's films are, and on top of it this one is about magicians. So that would be even more confusing. After having seen Tenet I was overestimating this film. It's nothing as complicated (though it is fairly so), and that's for a good thing. It's funny there are three actors in this film who also played superheroes movies - Christian Bale (Batman in TDK Trilogy), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine in X-Men), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow in MCU), and out of them Scarlett Johansson hadn't even come up as Black Widow yet. And since those are the only roles I have previously seen them, it was a bit weird seeing them do basic, method acting. The only one I had seen before do multiple roles is Michael Caine (Alfred in TDK trilogy), but he's in every Nolan film I've ever watched so he doesn't count. And all their acting was actually pretty convincing. The story is what mainly carries this film. There are two magicians who have two completely different ideas about magic. Borden is more of someone who believes in making his life more devoted towards magic, while Angier is someone who believes the charm of magic is more based on presentation. Both the magicians hold grudges against each other due to an accident which happened in the past, which is the reason they are constantly trying to outdo each other. Seeing this film I got to learn so many magic tricks that I otherwise used to dismiss as simply being some complicated trick my tiny brain is too weak to understand. My take from this, especially from Alfred Borden, was that to understand how magic works, we have to go to the absolute basics. How something is happening, how we can convince the audience that we are doing what they are thinking and how we can do it so smoothly that no one suspects a thing. This is something that we can say about science too, which was shown here by Nikola Tesla - what do you think is responsible behind what you see? If Edison had tried thinking it this way instead of trying to get to Tesla, he could have been considered just about as respectable while Tesla would have never been as famous as he is today. Though I didn't quite understand how exactly the whole cloning using electricity thing worked, I guess some things are better left to the viewer's imagination. The way Angier described how it feels to be cloned also left me in my imagination - what would happen if I am cloned with all the memories intact? Which one of us will be me? Forget The Dark Knight trilogy, now this is my favourite film by Christopher Nolan. I only learnt about Hollywood movies a few years ago, which absolutely explains why I never knew about this film. But now that I do, I'm going to recommend everyone to see it once. Seeing all the tricks and, like I mentioned above, trying to figure out how to deduct an act, I also felt like becoming a magician after watching this film.

The non-linear structure of the film keeps the audience on-edge. Nolan switches from narrative to narrative which may have been confusing for some viewers. The ensemble cast may be miscast as Hugh Jackman wasn't exactly great as Robert Angier. However, the movie's editing makes a tightly-packed and entertaining piece of art.

Not Nolan's best but still an amazing film. Just like Memento, The Prestige makes the audience question everything after the film is over. A great film with good acting performances.

I loved this film, till the point that i'd say it is Nolan's best. The script is mindblowing, as well as Jackman's and Bale's performances.

Such a fuss has been made of this movie that I expected something out-of-the-box, and for anyone willing to believe the unbelievable it might even seem so. It’s another example of how moviegoers and makers have embraced the format of ‘Style over Substance’. Everything about the story is so far-fetched and unbelievable that most of the time it’s simply not worth even considering the outcomes. It’s presented as if its fiction-fact, then swings into ridiculous science-fiction; Human Cloning in the 1890s! (and regularly overnight at that) If it weren’t for some reasonably convincing performances from the leads, stylish art direction and production design, moody lighting and cinematography (except for some unsteady hand–held sections) this production would have fallen over in a heap. As it is, it holds it's own based on stylish looks smothered in over-done smoke and mirrors camouflage. Many seem to go for this style and bluster but some will come away feeling cheated and taken for fools (and not in any sort **** way), it doesn’t do to think too much about this type of basically too clever for its own good writing. Characters are bleak and over-the-top nasty, not leaving much (if anything) to admire.

The Prestige is the best film by Christopher Nolan right after The Beginning. He has an excellent story, and as is usual with Nolan ... You will be confused. However, at the end of the film, there is an explanation that is absolutely phenomenal, and it is perhaps the best revelation I have ever seen in a film. I definitely recommend.

Two magicians with a bitter and intense rivalry with plenty of deceit and obsession . Very strong cast and director, I like all the twists and turns, if you haven't seen this movie I would highly recommend it, the first time you watch this it is amazing. You also get to see David Bowie who plays Nicola Teesla.

The Prestige has two great lead performances and an interesting story, which mostly keep it from succumbing to the ridiculousness of its many twists.
