The Exorcism of Emily Rose

With a cast like this, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a superior performance vehicle and on that count alone is never less than riveting.

Somehow the movie really never takes off into the riveting fascination we expect in the opening scenes. Maybe it cannot; maybe it is too faithful to the issues it raises to exploit them.

Could have been both a gripping courtroom drama and a chilling "is she or isn’t she?" horror tale. What we have instead is a movie that drifts, almost unmanned, from plot point to plot point.

Muddled tale of faith and reason.

I'm all for hearty theological debate. But this is intellectual suicide. Even worse, it's boring intellectual suicide.

The dullest exorcist movie ever made.

The fun of these movies is that Linney often seems too refined for such greasy junk, but there she is anyway, hamming it down as it were.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a bold movie in so many ways. Its part drama/ part horror. It combines the two beautifully to give us something that has not or rarely ever been done before. A film that makes us question our beliefs. It does not rest solely on its horror roots as so many other Exorcism movies do. It makes us question possibilities that may or may not exist by giving us a look at both sides of the same coin. A film that truly is intriguing as well as scary. The acting is absolute top notch. Laura Linney is fantastic to watch, but the real credit goes to Jennifer Carpenter. Her portrayal of Emily is one that makes you feel sorry for her as well as terrify you. Not since Linda Blair has an actress portrayed such a difficult role with such amazing depth. If you are looking for a straight up jump out and scare you type of movie, this is not the one. However, if you want a movie with a great story, moral message, and terrifying performances that resonate with you long after you watched..... Exorcism of Emily Rose is it. A fantastic journey that invokes fear as well as thought. And one that may have you keeping the lights on well into the late hours of the night. 9/10

Criminally underrated as both a horror film and courtroom drama. Fueled by some terrific lead performances from Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is one of the best of its kind. Recommended.

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is half courtroom drama and half exorcism film, and it fails on both levels. It is neither an intriguing courtroom drama or a scary possession film. It's poorly acted and shot and extremely boring. I don't recommend it at all.
