The Curse of Bridge Hollow is a mundane introduction to horror, with a bit of charm sprinkled in for good measure.

The problem is The Curse of Bridge Hollow isn’t clever enough to carve out a niche of its own and is defined by the diminishing returns of derivative genre riffs from start to finish.

IN A NUTSHELL: A teenage girl, who accidentally releases an ancient and mischievous spirit on Halloween which causes decorations to come alive and wreak havoc, must team up with the last person she’d want to in order to save their town – her father. The spooky Halloween flick was directed by Jeff Wadlow. The screenplay was written by Todd Berger and Robert Rugan based on the story by John R. Morey. THINGS I LIKED: Marlon Wayans headlines this frightfully fun Halloween special on Netflix. He provides most of the comic relief and is also one of the producers. His over-the-top performance is delightful and dependable. Lauren Lapkus, John Michael Higgins, and Rob Riggle made me laugh every time they were on screen. I always like them in anything they’re in. The leading ladies (mother & daughter) are Kelly Rowland and Priah Ferguson. The last time we saw Priah in something was in the popular TV show “Stranger Things.” Creepy spiders. Ick! Good special effects though! Lots of goofy humor and slapstick gags. The action is almost non-stop. I loved the Lin Manuel Miranda “Hamilton” costume THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: Some of the props and Halloween decorations that are turned alive look super fake. It’s pretty silly and goofy but that’s what makes it a good Halloween choice for kids this year. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Some “mild” profanity Some images may frighten young children. The movie is probably best for ages 10 and up. Bloodless Violence Destruction and spooky mayhem The dad tries to explain everything away with scientific facts. A girl uses a Ouija app to communicate with a dead woman.

Granted, the mayhem is inflicted mostly on zombies and other Halloween decorations that have come to life courtesy of the ancient curse unleashed by Sydney. But the casual decapitations and dismemberments transition from vaguely entertaining to annoying, mostly because there’s a lot less story than there are special effects.

Wadlow, a good horror director, seems hamstrung by the family-friendly context and struggles to develop tension in the absence of a plausible threat of violence.

There are plenty of perfunctory jump scares as well as some especially cheesy visual effects. But there is exactly one inspired sight gag and one funny line of dialogue, so you have those to look forward to, should you land on The Curse of Bridge Hollow while absent-mindedly scrolling for timely holiday fare.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow hopes to hide a clunky, unfunny script behind the veneer of a solid filmmaking apparatus, but it manages to test one's patience even at a merciful 89 minutes of runtime.

The film’s broad performances, undemanding humor and not-too-frightening horror are all designed to appeal to kids (and older fans of the “Haunted House” series). Adults are advised to enjoy the living Spirit Halloween aesthetic of it all, and remember that you love your children while enduring the rest of this hollow experience.

This movie accomplished what it it set out to do. It's a Family Halloween genre film. The characters are likeable. Which so often is not the case with films similar to this. If your just looking for a Halloween popcorn movie to watch to get your holiday fix...this just might satisfy that itch. Only clocks in at 90 minutes. It's fun.

It may be charming and appealing to younger audiences, because the style is more or less similar to what was seen in Hocus Pocus 2, and even with Marlon Wayans' loaded humorous brand, that is its key audience, but basically that's about it. Try to dig deeper and the flaws will only accumulate.

This is not very good. The story is really basic and unimaginative. The humour relies solely on Marlon Wayans and he is the most entertaining aspect of this film. The music is mostly good, if unimaginative. The sound design and cinematography are very forgettable. I didn’t even like the editing, most of the time they just showed the person that was speaking and not the other people’s reactions. The acting is average at best and the characters they are playing are exceptionally generic. The big problem is that most of the time they say their lines then wait, it's all about them delivering lines and no reactions. I blame the director on that one. The effects are actually pretty weak and unconvincing for 2022. Look at them driving the car in the establishing sequence. It looks bad! The writing and directing are pretty weak, certainly below average. It is just about engaging enough to hold my attention to the end. I will not be watching it again, please do not waste your time with a sequel unless you’re going to do something wildly different with it.

A generic "things come to life" halloween comedy. Which I ordinarily don't mind. The problem is it brings absolutely nothing new to the party and none of the comedy is particularly funny.

Veganism and intellectualism being the punch line to almost every comedic moment was boring and tired even for a Wayans brother.
