The Bounty is an intelligent, firstrate, revisionist telling of the famous tale of Fletcher Christian's mutiny against Captain Bligh. Particularly distinguished by a sensational, and startlingly human, performance by Anthony Hopkins as Bligh, heretofore one of history's most one-dimensional villains.

Il y eut 2 autres films sur la mutinerie du Bounty et cette 3ème mouture de 1984 est assurément la meilleure, la plus neutre et, étonnamment… la plus fidèle à la réalité historique. Ce n’est pas souvent qu’Hollywood montre un tel respect et un soin certain, alors ne boudons pas notre plaisir. Ainsi, les torts sont partagés et nos deux personnages sont habilement présentés et représentés dans leurs interrogations et leurs tempéraments diamétralement opposés ainsi que leurs actions qui appellent d’autres… réactions ! C’est un peu comme sur la place de l’Etoile en somme : 50-50 pour tout le monde. Bien sûr, quelques détails ont été aménagés ici et là au profit de la romance et le film marque d’ailleurs quelque ralentissement, voire quelque lenteur à Tahiti (le climat sans doute…) mais il s’agit d’un film d’aventures où le dépaysement le dispute aux grands espaces du voyage et de la fureur des éléments le cas échéant. Si Roger Donaldson n’est qu’un honnête faiseur sans envergure, il livre ici néanmoins une mise en scène appliquée tandis que la photographie s’avère des plus soignées, pour ne pas dire superbe (la carte postale est incluse). Les acteurs se révèlent excellents, des plus grands rôles aux plus **** et il est amusant de constater que Le Bounty a lancé ou confirmé les carrières respectives de Mel Gibson et Anthony Hopkins, parce qu’ils le valent bien ! Et si ce long voyage bouleversé par les hommes (et les vahinés) ne se suffisait pas à lui-même, la musique de Vangelis est là pour enfoncer le clou. Synthétique et poétique ou bien nostalgique et tendue, elle donne encore un peu plus de souffle à cette aventure maritime, décidément fort gratifiante ! Occasionally, this Bounty seems about to soar; the scene in which the ship first makes land at Tahiti, all throbbing drums, bare breasts and hooting sailors, is wonderfully rich if no less cliched. At other times, as when the Bounty leaves calm water for a gale in a split-second cut, the film seems almost amateurish. The rest of it occupies the middle ground between ho-hum and grand -- sure to disappoint those knowledgeable about the early films, still likely to engage those with two hours to kill. The Bounty has an incredible cast and a fabulously well-put-together production, and pays impressive attention to historical accuracy – more than any of the previous cinematic recreations. With all this going for it, it's a pity that the drama falls flat.

The movie seems to have been planned, written, acted, shot and edited by people who were constantly being overruled by other people. It's totally lifeless.

For once, you can't complain about a remake of an old classic or crowd pleaser. So definitely as good as the movie from 1935, and definitely better than the slightly empty picture book from 1962.
