Shot in magisterial black-and-white, veteran director Trueba's drama is a welcome return from the Belle Epoque man.

It’s a miniature art history lesson that is also a rapt communion between two people who, at least in this moment, are joined in the ecstasy of creation.

Thanks to Rochefort and Folch, as well as Trueba's delicate direction, it still manages to be an embraceable journey, one with its own quiet -- and artistic -- rewards.

The Artist and the Model isn’t about much, other than female beauty. That theme is not exactly controversial. Chalk the tameness of the subject matter up to the period in which the film is set.

Cardinale’s few brief scenes are the ones with the most depth; her facial lines really did come along with some wisdom.

This safe, solemn tale of an aged artist whose vitality is briefly revived by a pretty young thing is unconvincing as an articulation of the potentially spiritual nature of the artist/model relationship.

Treating one's audience like ignorant children in need of lecturing is hardly a way to win fans, or display one's own artistry.

Fernando Trueba is one of the most prestigious film directors who have Spain (he has an Academy Award to prove it). "The Girl of Your Dreams" was a typical movie Spanish, Andalusian charm and beauty. In "Chico & Rita", Trueba showed his love for boleros, Cuban music and an ode to deceased Bebo Valdés. With "The artist and the model," Trueba shows us his passion for French films, to Truffaut, old cinema, to the French language. A beautiful film, with class, elegance and a great fusion between Spain and France.

This movie was flat on about every level. There was no chemistry between any of the actors to make a ridiculous story line even an ounce believable. Don't waste your time seeing this flick. And I should add that I love art films.
