SummaryIn the summer of 1939, influential families in Nazi Germany have sent their daughters to a finishing school in an English seaside town to learn the language and be ambassadors for a future looking National Socialist. A teacher there sees what is coming and is trying to raise the alarm. But the authorities believe he is the problem.

Six Minutes to Midnight is a tribute to those real-life girls who, as guests from a land that would soon become a vicious enemy, represent a strange little intersection of English and German history—the human element behind symbols clashing on a badge.

Director Andy Goddard’s film is far too aware of its subject’s peculiarity, and every frame knows full well that something is a bit off.

The film is like a cheeky seaside postcard with swastikas and cryptography on the reverse.

Admirers of old-fashioned British war drama should find this passably entertaining, and the dazzling green Welsh countryside and seafront locations that stand in for England's Southeast coast are certainly pleasing to the eye. But handsome production values can't disguise shaky storytelling that relies almost entirely on composer Marc Streitenfeld's agitated orchestral score to stoke suspense.

Andy Goddard’s film clumsily superimposes a frenzied, completely fictional spy adventure onto a fascinating fragment of pre-war history.

It would be nice to say that Judi Dench, inevitably the headmistress, elevates the project, but even she can’t get gas back into the plummeting Zeppelin (wrong war, I know).

The photography is elegant, but nothing else is. With action that is standard and not at all tense, the melodrama is much higher than the reward.

It’s an interesting piece of history, but I’m not sure if any of it is movie worthy. It’s not a bad movie overall, it just lacked something that while I was watching it I couldn’t be bothered to figure out exactly what it was missing. Maybe it was the pacing or the story in general. There was one or two very good twists, but I’m hard pressed to say that I really witnessed any stand out acting from anyone. Everyone plays their part well, but the whole thing is basically a Hollywood trope wrapped and a pre-war girls academy that says very safe and does everything to not offend by offering anything of real interest or intrigue. I can’t say that I can think of anyone I’d recommend this to.
