Paradise Highway

Gutto demonstrates welcome restraint and a meticulous avoidance of anything that resembles exploitation, relying on indirect yet impactful allusions to keep us constantly aware of the mortal stakes involved. All in all, this is a singularly promising debut for a first-time feature filmmaker.

Juliette Binoche may play a seasoned truck driver with a firm grip on the wheel, but Paradise Highway proves to be an unsteady ride, guided by intriguing ideas but hampered by generic tendencies.

As intriguing as the combination of Binoche and Grillo might sound, it would be much more impactful if they shared the screen for more than a handful of scenes. As such, the movie begins with a bang, but it ends with a whimper.

If only the film had taken a broader view, filling in more details about the lives and motivations of the truck drivers as well as the sex traffickers.

If you squint you can nearly see the kind of movie Gutto might be aiming for.

Incredible thriller with an empowering ending - they don’t make films like this anymore (but they should!). If you need a change-up from unrealistic comic book films, this one delivers with a standout performance by Juliette Binoche playing a raw, weary, female trucker caught in an impossible situation.

Riveting! This movie is a must see with an all-star cast that will have you shocked, giggling, sad, angry, cheering, and on edge. It also brings much needed awareness to sex trafficking and systematic issues. Kudos!

Excellent cast. Strong performances by Juliette Binoche, Cameron Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, Jackie Dallas, Frank Grillo and others.

I understand the idea of the story but I don't buy it. Too many extremes from bond the girl to having parental feelings to her. Also the relationships from other characters are weird or just have no point for the story.

This isn't a actual disaster, but it came very close to being one. Paradise Highway is a thriller that spends its two-hour lifespan searching for a way to ensure not only that its narrative is good, but that it's sufficiently compelling. Needless to say it fails miserably. And it's an even bigger shame that it doesn't even make it considering that its cast was decent enough, and this one actually doesn't do too bad, but an actor even with desire will be crippled by a bad script, now imagine them acting just for their paycheck with a bad script. The main idea wasn't bad at all. There really was a good story here, but there's not much to do when there's no direction and the result becomes exhaustingly dull.
