Man Down

LaBeouf is committed, and it’s fun seeing him go toe-to-toe with Gary Oldman (as his boss). But amid Montiel’s jigsaw-like structure lurk some generic revelations. Disappointing.

For all of its effort to make an important point about the unseen casualties of war, Man Down is a taxing exercise for the viewer.

Forgotten or subject to overkill as they are here, veterans still get the shaft.

If [LaBeouf's] ultimately powerless to make this film worth watching, his performance is a strong reminder that his work should never be taken for granted.

Big moments drown in a soundmix of sappy muzak. Good actors are wasted, left and right. Classic Montiel.

The best that can be said for this film is that it’s short.

Mr. Montiel may have had honorable intentions in creating this movie. But what he made is neither a viable work of art nor an effective call to action. It’s a sadistic and ghoulish spectacle.

I very much enjoyed this movie. It was confusing at first, but it started to come together the longer I watched it. The acting was riveting in each scene. The acting is really what carried this movie. The message of the movie was clear. I was almost sobbing at the end. It was very good!

Such a tragedy. I feel like there is a solid movie somewhere here that got chopped up and edited into oblivion. All the elements are intact but they are so mangled and messed up that the plot is barely recognizable. It's like it was pieced together by an overzealous art school reject. A quality movie and a serious subject - glued together by the hands of a Picasso wannabe director. High caliber performances from Shia Lebeouf and Kate Mara couldn't save this abstract plot. And it is such a shame because they were both great. This could have been such a great movie.

The life of a homecoming soldier! I saw it a couple of days ago, but now I'm thinking does it deserve what I've rated. I mean I have rated it average, but I think I've overrated it. Some films impacts me the days going by since its watch, this is not one of those. It was exactly like the opposite. The cast looked good. Even the screenplay, only when each layer separated according to random timeline. Together, it is a mess. It was confusing at the beginning to the first three quarters of the tale. But once the twist came in, not what I was expected. The story of US army man who served in Afghanistan, now returned home after a disaster in the mission. Coping with the consequences, he's not the same man as before he left the home for his national duty. With narration keep changing its timeline, at one point in the final quarter, all are tied together. And ends the story before explaining the events for us. The actors were good, but it was the storyline that did not stand and deliver. Especially the editing that layered out multiple events. That created curiosity, though the solution was weaker. Or most of the viewers would guess that earlier self. Some people might like it, but surely majority won't. I don't know what should have been done to make it better. But I did not enjoy it. 5/10

Despite Shia LaBeouf's decent efforts with his performance, but the film itself is a piece of **** I would go as far to say it's pretty unwatchable. It looks and feels so cheap that I wasn't surprise this got completely forgotten after the 2015 TIFF screening. Until now it gets the light of day with an actual release in theaters, for which didn't last very long.
