Christine is, of course, utterly ridiculous. But I enjoyed it anyway. The movies have a love affair with cars, and at some dumb elemental level we enjoy seeing chases and crashes. In fact, under the right circumstances there is nothing quite so exhilarating as seeing a car crushed, and one of the best scenes in Christine is the one where the car forces itself into an alley that's too narrow for it.

Christine does indeed suffer from the preposterous, low-octane nature of the devil-car pretext. But this satanic nonsense is saved from strictly facetious appeal by a few sensational pictorial effects, notably the sights of Christine speeding after a victim while engulfed in flames or miraculously repairing her own battered body, and by the no-nonsense performances of an excellent cast, especially Keith Gordon as the obsessed and transformed Arnie Cunningham.

This movie is a stone cold Carpenter classic. I think what really sets John Carpenter's movies apart is how understated his style is
This movie is really all about those dolly shots and atmosphere, which is core to John's style, but you never really "see" his flashy shots until you look for them. I love his use of music as a sort of background mood, and the acting is actually very good with a cast that I don't recognize at all.
So many great shots that we would call "oners" now really give a great sense of pace (pull back shot from a rear-view mirror to another character, many dolly shots of the warehouse that give a sense of geometry) It's not a fast film, but I think a lesser director would chop the edits to make it seem fast. But the movie is about Arnie's slow descent into Christine's world. Film VFX will never make a movie endure forever, but craftsmanship will. It's not a film that stands out in his catalogue, but I think it contents with his best for sure. And the score really glues it all together.

Christine is a cult thriller by John Carpenter. Perhaps one of his best films. Christine is a great thriller that has both mysticism and suspense. Yes, the first 20 minutes of the film may seem boring, the plot is really slowly spinning. But then the film looks literally in the same breath. And after all, Christine does not have a gigantic budget, not a stellar cast. That's the greatness of John Carpenter. He makes cult films without a budget, sometimes so far for the mass audience that they acquire cult status only after a few years. For me, Christine stands in the ranking of Carpenter's best films in one place with The Thing. Now such thrillers are almost not removed, and the mysticism is no longer so gracefully presented to the viewer. I can only advise everyone to watch this masterpiece

This 1983 feature was Carpenter's best film since Halloween but still couldn't recapture the perfect balance of visceral shock and narrative integrity that defined his first success.

When Christine's on the warpath, she foams at the grille. But her movie doesn't do right by her snottiness. Her movie, never scary but campily entertaining for about an hour, loses compression toward the end and the grumpy old thing finally sputters to a stall - gets flattened, poops out. [09 Dec 1983]

Christine seems like a retread. This time it's a fire-engine red, 1958 Plymouth Fury that's possessed by the Devil, and this deja vu premise (from the novel by Stephen King) combined with the crazed vehicle format, makes Christine appear pretty shop-worn.

The early parts of the film are engaging and well acted, creating a believable high school atmosphere. Unfortunately, the later part of the film is slow in developing, and it unfolds in predictable ways. The special effects are good, the performances are nicely deadpan, and the score is clever. But Christine herself is something of a bust.

Adapted from the Stephen King killer car novel, this John Carpenter film is more like an assembly line vehicle than a customised job, but is nevertheless a slick, entertaining piece of work.

All time classic supernatural thriller. Good acting and cheesy lines make for a great watch.

I enjoyed this eighties tale of Herbie gone psycho. The violence was a bit muted for my tastes but the idea and the execution are entertaining enough for it not to matter. It is not too slow even though not a huge amount happens. There is excitement in the form of lots of car action sequences but nothing too huge to handle. The petrol station blowing up was very cool. There wasn't much suspense. This is not an especially scary horror movie but it is a good film to watch with a beer to warm you up to something scarier. Entertaining but not as good as a less obviously hokum filled horror.

It was quite slow moving and wasn't that scary at all. A Plymouth Fury could could not be a more non-threatening model. I get an image in my head of my grandpa driving something like that. And aside from memorable moments from Keith Gordan, everyone is unamusing or a cartoon stereo-type of every kind of high school teenager.
