Ruskin gives a fresh bend to the story of the Boston Strangler, and indeed to the true-crime genre. There are plenty of true crime films to entertain, but few that reach alongside the likes of Richard Brooks’s In Cold Blood (1967), in Fincher’s Zodiac (2007), and in his abandoned television project, Mindhunter. Ruskin’s Boston Strangler belongs on this list.

We Got This Covered
Boston Strangler has more to say than some might think by promoting a forthright, focused, and professionally progressive approach in those central performances. Roles which are only made to look easy by Knightley and Coon, purely because they embody them so effortlessly.

I enjoyed the movie. I wasn't familiar too much with the case so don't know how accurate the movie is and I did see there are already many movies made about the theme, but this still was quite interesting to watch.

A distant cousin to “Zodiac,” with splashes of “Seven” mixed into its homages, this thriller falls short of its influences yet carves out a small space of its own. It makes a searing indictment of the sloppy, sexism-laced police work that might’ve resolved the case, and pays tribute to the two women who broke the investigation wide open.

Ruskin succeeds in paying tribute to Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole's hard work, but it's less successful in filling in the larger story.

It's sturdy, dependable stuff, and it might do the trick for viewers not expecting a more traditional serial killer thriller. But if you're looking for something beyond a surface-level telling of a true story, you might just want to rewatch "Zodiac" again instead.

The movie attempts to serve multiple narrative masters, but ends up coming across as vague and indistinct.

Washed in an unappetizing sludge of grayish green, the movie aims for serious and settles on bilious. The real McLaughlin was a fascinating, pioneering newshound; you’re unlikely to find her here.

Good, but familiar plot vehicles. I wish more women directed movies with women leads to showcase the complex thinking of women.

Boston Strangler is well made film with an average script. The problem with this film is you have a great cast that deserves a better story and when you have similar films about investigative journalism like Zodiac, Spotlight, and even last years She Said which are incredibly engrossing stories, this just seems like a what might have been. Overall this is not a bad film and the cast does the best they can with a mediocre script this film deserves a mild recommendation. 6/10 a B-

The old Tony Curtis version with the splitscreens was great fun. This one tries to do the best with its female lead and Keira Knightly holds it together well. But it's a shame that there is no chemistry whatsoever between her character and Carrie Coon's character. The duo could have been the new Green Hornet and Cato.
