Working from a Will Honley screenplay, Anderson here crafts a thorny horror film that’s unsettling even when Owen isn’t lunging at the necks of babies and old people — because, like King, Anderson and Honey are as interested in life’s everyday bruises as they are in gaping wounds.

It’s not high art or a great film, just a genre tale with a twist. And it’s a tad predictable, by the time that third act rolls around. But Monaghan and the kids sell the premise, and the movie plays.

It’s a sullen, trauma-driven approach to horror that’s far less traditional and reliant on human monsters amidst magical mysteries—not a killshot. This prolonged approach lacks decadent suspense or encompassing dread.

Brad Anderson’s film steers a middle course between dysfunctional domestic drama and supernatural horror. That balance doesn’t completely work. But solid performances and some strong, occasionally unpleasant content make this an involving if not entirely satisfying watch.

Director Brad Anderson’s Blood is one of the rare vampire movies to focus entirely on the subject of drug addiction, which could make it a refreshing entry to the subgenre. Unfortunately, Blood’s script leans too heavily on tropes. Besides that, Anderson’s competent direction cannot help with Blood’s mixed messages about drug addiction and an ultimately unlikable protagonist.

Blood delivers plenty of the titular substance but not much else of note other than a couple of decent scenes here and there; a central performance from Michelle Monaghan is ultimately more interesting than the film surrounding it.

This movie goes downhill so fast it turns inadvertently from horror to comedy, but when they see the box-office grosses, I don’t think director Brad Anderson or screenwriter Will Honley will be the ones who laugh.

Weirdly it's not so bad. Not for the main reasons, coz it's sold as a vampire horror movie (i don't think i'm spoiling more than the title, the miniature and the pitch), which it is, yet not really.. I mean seeing the insane choices, the actual bad guy is the main protagonist, clearly unfit to take care of children and who shouldnt have had custody. It's coherent. From the beginning to the very end, the kid shouldve gone to the hospital. The vampirism itself is treated lightly in a few images, yet enough to throw in something constructed. It was transmitted by a dog bite and there were bats in the hollow tree (so rage) yetit wasn't transmitted by the kid and there was something 'evil' in the tree. Cute overall and decent entertainment, which is the purpose.
