It's amazing, looking back, just how much variety this succinct parody of the western genre is able to put on display. Stuffed with every type of joke, pun and ruse imaginable, it's the perfect vehicle for an in-his-prime Mel Brooks to show off his devastatingly effective abilities in each style. More impressively, it makes those wild leaps from pointed, hilarious dialogue to silly sight gags to dense, dark satire without disrupting the flow of the story and becoming an undisciplined series of loosely-related skits (though it does come awfully close). That it can also be so funny amidst a subject matter so heavy (Brooks tackles racism and government corruption amidst the more obvious targets), is further testament to his talents. I'm not a huge fan of the bizarre non-sequitur ending sequence, but given the uninterrupted laughs that precede, it's a small price to pay.

This is easily one of the funniest movies of all **** Brooks has incredible comic timing.

Staggeringly overrated. Boring and tediously unfunny. Dreadfully scripted, acted and plotted. One of the worst films I've ever seen, and I love irreverent, rude, shocking comedy. This was just lame and hasn't aged at all well, if it were ever funny in the first place.

An absolute masterpiece. Mel Brooks makes fun of everybody. This is what comedy is supposed to be.

The movie mostly lost me at the fourth wall breakage part. They couldn't make a comedy like this to today in this uptight era for sure, lol. Ok off to rewatch Spaceballs for the umpteenth time.

As a film that cannot be made in the modern age, this type of comedy is approached from a respectful angle. Great performances all-around with some hilarious moments, though there are periods of down-time and some humor is a little anachronistic.

While I slightly prefer The Producers and Young Frankenstein this is still a jewel in the crown when it comes to comedy. It is silly and it is not subtle at all, there are those who will flinch at some of the language used. But it is very funny, and works really well as a spoof. The story is a lot of fun, and there are enough slapstick and jokes to amuse as well as a wonderful script. The production values are very good too, while the acting is spot on. Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder are both great as the smart-as-a-whip railway worker appointed first black sheriff and the drunken gunman who helps him out, while Madeline Kahn(in a Marlene Dietrich send-up), Alex Karras and Harvey Korman are even better. Overall, not subtle but still great. 9/10 Bethany Cox

This is a very silly and amusing film, with a heavy emphasis on slapstick comedy. I haven't seen too many Western comedy films, other than 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' and this was definitely funnier (in my opinion) - there's a strong sense of quirkiness. Its certainly not a film that takes itself too seriously - its more of a spoof/parody film but I enjoyed that. This is a bit of a cult classic and I can understand why. The cast performances are good too. This is a politically incorrect film, featuring multiple racial slurs, so it won't appeal to all but as parodies go, this is one of the better ones. Yes, I would certainly recommend this, for the surreal situations depicted and the madcap zany charatcers, if nothing else. It also has a bit of a comic book feel to it as well.

An inventive comedy for its time by Mel Brooks as it delivers in being both a fun and western-satirical watch during its running time without coming across as juvenile. This is a comedy with brains around the same level as the British "Monty Python" tribe. Good stuff.

The movie is ahead of it’s time. The jokes in it still feel fresh and over all it’s one of the funniest western movies out there. Strong 10

Honestly, This is a pretty overrated movie for me. Some of the jokes were funny but most of it was just attempts to be offensive (which I don't mind) in order to come off as funny. There were a lot of jokes throughout and most of them simply weren't funny. It is not a movie that ages well at all.

The best raw comedy produced by the American film society! I laughed throughout the whole film.

Some jokes hit hard and left me in pain from laughing so hard, while others missed completely. Inconsistent comedy and mediocre story aside, though, the ending is one of the most meta things I've ever seen.

Classic comedy that is still funny today. A must see for fans of comedy and fans of the era.

I find it so hilarious when people these days are offended by certain sequences in this film. Mel Brooks in my opinion found the perfect through line in which to satirize certain parts of our lives that was not racist and was not sexist but just funny as hell. " The sheriff is near… " so funny. And the Alex Karras sequence in which he punches the horse is so ingrained in my memory and so part of my youth that I cherish it.
