Ash is riveting, even as it drifts away from and back into the precarious tropes of the genre, like waves against the shore.

Ash is categorically a vibe more than it is an especially unique story or illuminating character study, even if González’s steely beauty conveys plenty about the psychological stakes at hand. But in this age of expensive and overwrought world-building, it’s Ellison’s experiential care with well-worn material that delivers the goods.

Without pretending to emulate classics like Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982), it is a film that, while it takes time to take shape and atmosphere, manages to take the viewer by surprise. What remains to be seen is whether the epilogue points to a sequel.

Reasonably good Sci-Fi, horror movie. Acting was good. The plot was not particularly thought provoking.

The movie’s razor-sharp visuals leave scratch marks on the back of your eyeballs, liable to burst back into your consciousness in subsequent dreams.

The film will likely find a receptive audience among those who enjoy blood-soaked B movies. It has enough gory elements to enhance the overpowering mood.

The high-concept sci-fi horror film “Ash,” a hazy story about an amnesiac deep-space explorer who awakens to discover her entire crew was killed, is light on answers but heavy on style.

True to its inspirations, Ash offers up a formal mix between traditional sci-fi filmmaking and frequent first-person segments (either through pseudo-body cam footage or more explicitly video game-like bouts of point-of-view panic) that gives the familiarity a bit more energy than your average knock-off.

Ash can be horrific and genuinely startling; there’s a specific scene near the end that underscores the apprehension that permeates the film. It’s chilling and memorable. And yet, had the sci-fi thriller given its characters more dimension, it would have been all the stronger.

The release of the film has been long awaited, let's go over the pros and cons: good visuals, good OST, acceptable scenery, cutie E. Gonzalez and the already brutal A. Paul (there was little of him) played well, action and blood, lots of blood. There are screamers and they work wellAs for the cons: choppy editing, low budget, epileptics will not like some scenes. A kind of mix of "Alive" and "It" with a sexy chick in the main role. For a one-time viewing, nothing more.

Same as it's been said, the actress is (too) good looking but can't act, the first half is empty (and not a slow build-up type, just nothing), the second half is packed. But pretty much everything comes from other movies anyway Seems like they had a vision but couldnt make it. I mean the photo shots with the music are prolly supposed to be... alienish.. But they're actually just rocks on a black/purple background. The first half is prolly supposed to be a paranoia build-up but it doesn't give a single clue about the second half. Etc. Overall.. nice try but meh final cut

Gostei da trilha sonora, mas pra quem já viu Alien, isso aqui é tão amador, chato, despretensioso e anticlimático. Só mais um experimento mesmo, e bem banal e esquecível.

The film looks pretty good for a budget feature. And... that's about the only good thing I can say about it. For a non-professional director it's relatively well shot, but esthetics can only take you so far. The horror atmosphere in this supposed horror film is non-existent. In order to keep the viewers from falling asleep, the film frequently uses screamers, which is the worst horror cliche there is. The design is weird and inconsistent. Most of the interiors are your standard sci-fi environments with a slick, strictly functional design, but at the same time some of the technology they use looks very strange, reeking of Giger and biopunk esthetics. It also looks very impractical at times, with wires sticking out of the spacesuits, for example. Because, yeah, there is absolutely no chance of them tangling up and tearing, thus compromising the entire suit. The same goes for the med bot, which is designed to lunge at the patient with needles. Not like humans have, you know, reflexes and stuff, so fast, unpredictable movements of the machine can undermine the whole procedure. The cast is so-so. Aaron Paul is reliably good in pretty much everything he's in, but Eiza Gonzalez is pretty meh. And I think the creators understood that she wasn't good enough for such a demanding role, so they inserted numerous moments where she speaks her thoughts out loud, which just looks cheap and cringe. She's also distractingly good-looking and has make-up on all the time. Waking up bloodied in the middle of a slaughter? Foof, it's a good thing my make-up is still perfectly intact! Going out into a hazardous, potentially deadly environment in a full space suit? Better put on my make-up! Ffs, she even has her make-up on when she gets out of the shower. I have no idea why they did that. Maybe they hoped it would at least keep the male audience awake. The music is just okay. Pretty standard sci-fi score selections. I expected a lot more from a film directed by a renowned musician. All in all, this is the kind of film you'd expect to see on the Dust channel. Although even that would be an insult to Dust, considering that Prospect, a film they made a few years ago on a similar budget, looks much better, is much better acted and has a much more interesting plot.

Acclaimed producer and musician Flying Lotus has always wanted to be a filmmaker, and now he's presenting a sci-fi horror film that basically rips off many of the concepts from 'Alien' (there's even a scene completely taken from 'Prometheus') and converts them into a student-style production. Eiza González and Aaron Paul have nothing to do with an incoherent script that can't even explain the most basic plot points. It's like a terrible episode of 'Black Mirror.' Neither the horror, the action, nor the science fiction work in 'Ash.'
