Without having any particularly noteworthy aspect, Vagante is a title that fans of the Roguelike genre will love. A simple game that improves in its multiplayer mode, which will give us hours of fun.

An excellent, deceptively unshowy blend of platformer and roguelike. [Eurogamer Recommended]

Ultimately Vagante is no masterpiece, but it has an impressively satisfying core gameplay loop that will help this appeal to more hardened roguelike fans. Less experienced fans of the genre may want to steer clear though.

This game is deceptively bad. On the surface it seems like a fun, unique, co-op, rpg fun game. In reality however it’s pretty awful. Be ready to die repeatedly and start over and over and OVER. Sudden deaths to little pixels on a screen you couldn’t see, useless backgrounds for characters, and always seeming to get screwed by RNG. But don’t worry! If the ring doesn’t screw you the game will! Accidentally set off a trap you couldn’t see a slight pixel color difference in?! Hurray death! Start all over! Tons of hidden mechanics never explained like “how to pick things up” or what half of any of the stuff actually does!
The Devs really dropped the ball here with making difficulty over enjoyment, just for sake of being a “hard game.” No one is ever on the servers and it’s no wonder this game stinks at the most important thing. Being a fun game to play!

An occasionally fun game that often made me feel like I was purposelessly banging my head against a wall. This is a tough roguelike game where the payoff for any measure of success often feels unfulfilling, and death (which often comes quite swiftly and frequently) feels fairly punishing. I think this is a game for masochists, and while I enjoyed it somewhat, I don't think I could stand to play it at length.

With its neat pixel art and millimeter-tuned gameplay, Vagante is a roguelike that manages to stand out thanks to its dark-fantasy vibe and dynamism. Drawing on the best ideas from the competition, it reveals its true personality as one progresses and demonstrates that a small team can bring a fascinating game to life. It doesn't have the outfit of a Hades and would have deserved more biomes to discover, but it's an experience that should delight fans of the genre.

I can safely say that if you enjoy roguelite action games such as Dead Cells or more intense examples like Spelunky, you’ll find a lot to like in Vagante. There’s a lot to discover in this game, and it never stops feeling dangerous enough to produce the tension that makes this genre work so well. It also has some great multiplayer options for those who want to tackle a game like this with that advantage and/or disadvantage. A well-rounded experience where you get all of the fun of building up a character and all of the thrills of narrowly evading instant-death traps. Give it a chance, and you’ll reap the rewards.

Vagante it's a joyful roguelite that will give you a ton of game hours, and it hides more that you can imagine at first sight. With 4 player coop on the same Switch, with local and online modes too, it's a great game to enjoy with others, even if the combat it's a little bit simple and the formula, as all roguelites, no less repetitive.

Vagante is a moody RPG/platforming roguelike looks neat, if dark and gloomy, and plays well. It’s not groundbreaking, but there’s enough to keep genre fans busy with the copious amount of items to try out. It’s a little on the tough side, but that’s also the idea.

Vagante is, at times, an impressive game that feels incomplete. There is no denying the incredible amount of dedication that the team put into certain aspects, especially into the visuals and variety of upgrades available, but there isn’t enough of a game here to make it all come together into a complete package. The combination of a short adventure, the lack of any story, arbitrary difficulty, and minimal tutorials makes for a hard recommendation. The Nintendo Switch has plenty of incredible roguelikes and run-based indie games, and your time is better spent on them than Vagante.
